  3. Just a week before Robert Morris (a Trump advisor) quit, Texas right wing megachurch pastor Tony Evans quit after making a vague statement about committing “a sin.”

    The Southern Baptists are still dealing with a huge abuse scandal and they’re facing a schism over the recognition of women pastors, with ultraconservatives narrowly losing a vote on the issue but remaining in power of church machinery that allows them to disenfranchise  individual churches.

    There’s a narrative here if the political press understood or cared, but they remain stuck in a patronizing, top-down view of evangelicals because they’re convinced that’s how to be more balanced.

    This doesn’t mean Southern Baptists are suddenly becoming Unitarian Universalists. But the politicization of evangelicals and the effect it has on excluded believers does not follow the narratives the DC press has established.

    • As a former Southern Baptist, it’s interesting to watch the decline of the denomination. Membership has declined for the last 17 years, and now there are less than 13 million remaining. Their numbers are the lowest they’ve been since the 1970s.

      Another organization might ask “what are we doing wrong” but no, Southern Baptists decide that they need to lean harder into misogyny, racism, homophobia, abuse, and every other hypocritical stance they can find to adopt. Because that’s working so well!

      Amid declining numbers, they throw out churches that allow women to serve as pastors, because … reasons?

      I won’t miss them when they’re gone.

      What’s Next For The Southern Baptist Convention After It Ousted 5 Woman-Led Churches?

      • The movement understands PR, and they are really good at putting together packages for reporters who don’t want to dig and just want to tell the leadership’s side.

        There are a lot of people on the ground level who would tell a much more honest story, but they have little reason to trust the typical DC reporter parachuting in for a day who’s already telegraphed they’ve made up their mind that evangelicals are a hive mind.
