  1. Tuberville said he would still hold out on the 4 star generals, which can still have an impact. Hopefully though the other republicans in the Senate are still tired enough of his bullshit to vote to bypass him on those too.

    • I still can’t get over the fact that there’s a Senator named Tommy Tuberville. Sounds like a cartoon character from a children’s TV show. Although Britain has Baron Sugar and Baron Adonis, so I suppose the Anglophone world doesn’t really lack for names that provoke a smirk from those of us with a preteen sense of humor.

On the subject of Senators, our junior Senator is named Kirsten Gillibrand, who was plucked from obscurity when HRC, our notional junior Senator at the time, made her first run for the Presidency. Around this time I was at a party, nothing to do with politics, and somebody I had never met before blowhardedly assured us that our new Senator was Jake Gylllenhaal.

I can, when called upon, exercise discretion and maintain a dignified silence, and this was one of those times. It helped (and hurt) that BH kicked me under the table and hit my left kneecap. The price of love.

    • The Senate always had the power to go around him, it’s just that it would have required an up-and-down vote for every single promotion. Since there were hundreds of them, it would have taken weeks to do and would have required Schumer to basically drop all other Senate business to get it done. He refused to do that just because Coach Sen. Dipshit was being obstinate.

  2. In other news (sorry, this headline came from the New York Post; no need to provide a link, the headline says it all)

Chris Christie’s niece charged for drunken ‘Do you know who I am?’ 2022 incident at New Orleans airport: report

Hon, it’s tough enough to keep track of the Bidens. For that matter, I’m having trouble keeping up with Mayor Eric Adams, who is as incompetent and vainglorious as Bill deBlasio but with an added layer of even more hamhanded corruption and cronyism that should shock the conscience of the citizens of my Fair Gotham.

What was my solemn pledge to be more positive in future?

    • Well, bless her heart. I’m not entirely sure I could pick Chris Christie out of a lineup, much less some relative with severe entitlement issues. I mean, generally speaking, size would give it away but if you put a bunch of other big guys in suits in the lineup? I’d be guessing.

  3. My goodness. Whatever is this world coming to?

Josh Marshall has some more details on that Florida GOP power couple sex scandal

The story has a complicated, uncanny dynamic because, on the one hand, it’s that old as the hills story of a family values Republican caught up in sexual practices which, if harmless themselves for consenting adults, don’t at all square with their public personas or policy agenda. On the other, buried in that schadenfreude-y story of Republicans with their pants down is a very credible accusation of rape.

…Bridget is a member of the Sarasota County School Board and the cofounder of Moms for Liberty, the far right “parental choice” group working to keep schools free of trans rights, gay rights and any other imagined woke indoctrination. Bridget Ziegler became such a phenom in Florida MAGA circles that Ron DeSantis appointed her to the board charged with lording over Disney.

…Bridget Ziegler meanwhile, who built her career in significant measure on demonizing gay people, admitted to police that she had sex with the female accuser at least once.

…Two days earlier the three had agreed to meet for another encounter, but Bridget Ziegler couldn’t make it. The accuser canceled after finding out Bridget wouldn’t be there. “I was mainly in it for her,” she reportedly told Christian Ziegler. But Christian showed up anyway.

The woman has accused Christian of entering the home and raping her. According to the accuser’s account, she had no ability to consent since she had been home drinking all day.

…Christian Ziegler meanwhile offered as a defense that he had actually videotaped what he claimed was consensual sex. He recorded it but then, he claimed, deleted it before uploading it to his Google Drive.

    • The fact that Ziegler’s first name is Christian is the piped frosting on the Gingerbread Man Christmas ornament. “What a piece of work is a man.” Wm Shakespeare.

I have never participated in a threeway, and can’t really imagine how that must work, but I have shared (platonically) beds and floor spaces with all kinds of people. And dogs, of course. So many dogs. And let alone filming some kind of escapade and uploading it. What is wrong with people?

      • Bridget is the imbecile that was appointed to the punitive Disney board that rules the Disney taxing district by DeSantis, and made statements that seemed to indicate that she believed she would now be telling Disney what movies they could make. Apparently someone pulled her aside and said, no, dear, it’s more wastewater management than overseeing Disney creative.

        • I’m sure Disney is loving any paranoia that may be growing that they were digging up dirt on these people. Although realistically people like that have stepped on a lot of toes.

      • Yeah if I agreed to a three-way and then one person cancelled, that’s not what I signed up for.

This really does feel like “well they consented to some sex stuff therefore you can say they consented to everything.”

Given that the republican party has no concept of what consent means, they won’t care and won’t consider it rape.

    • “Two days earlier the three had agreed to meet for another encounter, but Bridget Ziegler couldn’t make it. The accuser canceled after finding out Bridget wouldn’t be there. “I was mainly in it for her,” she reportedly told Christian Ziegler. But Christian showed up anyway.”

Ok, I am not kink-shaming nor victim-blaming… much. But, what about this lady would provoke this… unicorn person? An element of self-hatred? Did she just get back from a decade abroad and didn’t know who they were?

      • Well, to be utterly shallow, if you look at their pictures, Bridget is … significantly more physically attractive than her husband.

And let’s face it, lots of people don’t follow the news or anything else. So the woman may not have realized that these two cretins are actively demonizing the LGBTQ+ community.

      • Oh no, me neither. This particular story is completely new to me. Wasn’t it at this venue where I explained how I learned what a throuple was? I was at a roof party, we used to have them all the time, and I got talking to these three guys I had never never met before. From the roof you/one/I could see their apartment building. Later, the guy who invited them told me that they were a throuple. “A what?” So the guy gently, and very sensitively, explained what a throuple was. I was about 50.

    • I wake up in the morning

And I raise my weary head

I’ve got an old coat for a pillow

And my couch was last night’s bed

      I don’t know where I’m going

Only God knows where I’ve been

I’m a dummy on the run

      A Trump fondler

A tiny fart in the wind

When you’re brought into this world

They say you’re born in sin

Well, at least they gave me something

I didn’t have to steal or have to win

Well, they tell me that I’m a failure

      Yeah, I’m a failed man

I’m that dolt in your stable

I’m what Curley Joe was to Curley

Mister, mock me if you can

I’m going down in a blaze of infamy

Take me now but know the truth

I’m going down in a blaze of glory

And, Lord, I never won at first

But I did after 15 votes

      I’m no one’s winner

      Call me a Young Dumb

    • I think for some of them they’re also just sick of it. I think finding out the only ones who matter are a dozen or so raving lunatics drained a lot of the ego boost and trappings of prestige from the job.

A big part of McCarthy’s job was stroking the egos of the powerless reps and telling them that they really mattered, and begging them to hang on a little longer so things could get better. But that’s over for a lot of them, and you have to wonder if more will be “quiet quitting” and just going through the motions.

I don’t know if any of them have good intentions, but a lot have ambitions. They want things like higher offices, pork barrel projects, rewards for friends, and cushy lobbyist jobs. Those things get a lot harder with the power shift to the extremists, who are not only ineffective but petty and vengeful. There isn’t even much of a game to play anymore.

    • It’s the circle of life! McCarthy was the upstart righty screaming that John Boehner was too left-wing to govern last decade; now he’s the RINO centrist getting pilloried by an even further-right psychopath. Someday soon, Rep. Kyle Rittenhouse will lead the campaign to depose notorious centrist Marjorie Taylor Greene. Sunrise, sunset.

    • That’s well known in New York. Every so often when the Department of Sanitation needs to meet some kind of revenue-generating quota they’ll descend on apartment buildings and rummage through the garbage.

      https://cbcny.org/advocacy/testimony-state-new-york-city-recycling

      From the article:

NYC’s recycling rates continue to lag its relatively modest 23 percent goal, despite some recent improvement. Since fiscal year 2011, the City’s overall curbside diversion rate—the share of curbside waste that is recycled—increased just 1.6 percentage points, from 15.4 percent to 17.0 percent in fiscal year 2022. Other cities have achieved higher diversion rates; for example, Seattle’s diversion rate was 62.7 percent in 2020.

I can’t tell you the billions of hours wasted by me and my fellow citizens cleaning and sorting packaging, only to have it trucked to a remote landfill in the deep South or somewhere. Oh well. It seems to make people feel good.
