    Katie Porter — who at least gives a shit about corporate nonsense even if she’s a tad centrist for my taste — and actual cool person Barbara Lee miss out so Garvey can get waxed. Thanks, Adam Schiff! Can’t wait to watch you be California’s Joe Manchin!

     

    • Schiff is probably going to be another Feinstein, who overall had a good voting record but had a bad habit of going along with some bad faith GOP shenanigans as if they were going to be impressed by concessions.

      I think the best argument for Porter was that she actually thinks about the structural issues behind problems instead of just trying to replay everything by the same rules. The Senate needs more innovative thinkers on the left, because the GOP is working overtime to blow up rules, and the old stability is gone no matter what incrementalists want.

      • I loved Schiff in the impeachment hearings & hoped that Biden would replace Garland with him or Ted Lieu but I agree that the other 2 would have been better choices.  The biggest issue is not letting  Shithead Garvey flip the seat!

      • You see a lot of this in NY and I presume the same goes for Cali: There are people who in 40 other states would probably be Republican but because one party is the only path to political success, they’re not. They will toe the Dem party line because that’s the way forward for them personally but they will never ever even for a second entertain anything remotely progressive. *COUGH* Andrew Cuomo *COUGH*

        Now that makes Schiff much better than, say, Garvey, but he’ll always demand backtracking on anything that goes against the status quo and that means he’s an eternally shaky vote on basically everything that’s needed to fix anything. I called him “Manchin” which is unfair (probably) but he’s definitely aiming at the mythical “Reagan Republican” voter from 1981 rather than where the electorate is now — especially in his state. He’s a new Pelosi, which is not the worst outcome, but it’s not exactly reassuring either.

        I do like Porter because she gets it economically, and she’s tough. We could use more tough in the Senate.

    • It’s strictly performative. Florida doesn’t have the sustained winds necessary to run wind turbines. Nobody’s going to build one so it’s perfectly safe to ban them and “own the libs.” Next they’ll probably pass a ban on immigrants from Mars. We are a leader in solar power, but the Florida legislature keeps trying to fuck that up at the behest of fossil-fuel power companies, who want to shut it down. So far it’s not working but they’ll hatch out a new plan soon.

      Stopped clocks and all.

      • The bill was heavily opposed by the state’s solar developers, who said it would have increased utility bills and ruined the cost proposition for distributed generation. A week after the state Senate passed the bill, a Sachs Media poll found that only 3% of Florida voters supported the legislation, while 86% wanted to see the measure vetoed.

        I guess we know what Ron DeSantis’ tipping point is. Sensible action just needs to reach +83% public support for him to back it.

    Over the weekend, Executive Editor Joe Kahn and his two top deputies confirmed they had commissioned a leak investigation – itself an extraordinary act for a news organization often reliant on leaks of sensitive material for its own stories. (Several former veteran Times journalists told NPR they were taken aback by the turn of events.)

    The whole thing is worth a read, because I think it underlines how messed up the upper management of the paper is. They are continually trying to act like their problems are isolated and fixable through narrow policy changes. It’s a leadership problem, and that includes top editors and the publisher, AG Sulzberger.

    It’s telling that top news editor Joe Kahn is promising that there will be better processes for handling internal concerns, when it’s been reported that Kahn’s top deputy, Carolyn Ryan, stonewalled for two years the internal process for objections to bias in the paper’s coverage of trans issues – objections based on specific applications of the standards of journalism.

    And then when frustrated staff made public their concerns about journalism standards, publisher AG Sulzberger haughtily (and falsely) dismissed them as calling for advocacy.

    Now they’re essentially installing different color complaint boxes, when the real issue is how the same bosses keep sending those complaints to the round file.

    This isn’t something that can be fixed by cracking down on the lowest level, but Sulzberger is too dumb to understand.

    • It’s really dangerous to take what’s happening and say “The problem is the leak” … uh, I’m not sure who you’re going to convince of that. And if even half of what’s in the union grievance is true, the paper is going to have a discrimination lawsuit on its hands sooner rather than later.

      Anyway, though, so long as Maga Haberman has free hand to write lullabies about Trump’s tone softening for the 19th time.

      • One of the looming issues if Trump wins is that he will criminalize what the NY Times does with leaks. It could be the smallest bit of unfavorable gossip, but they will be turned into supposed national security issues and there will be injunctions landing left and right from friendly courts.

        On what planet do Sulzberger and his crew think that being enmeshed in the blowback from their own leak investigations will help them if this happens? And you can bet that the lesson Trump takes from E. Jean Carroll’s legitimate victory will be to file multibillion dollar defamation suits against the Times. He’s not going to care that Haberman once downplayed a story to make Ivanka happy.

        • The answer is, they’re not thinking of that. If nothing else, they are such firm believers in the status quo that they can’t even begin to think about considering the possibility of wondering if it’s time to discuss the option of starting to talk about opening dialogue on contemplating the chance of mulling it over.

          Of course they’ll also roll over when the status quo changes because that’s usually what happens to that type when things go sideways. What’s a little Vichy France among centrists?

          • And of course what happened to countless members of the French elite was ruin. The Nazis didn’t care about any agreement they made on Monday if they wanted something different on Tuesday.

            Trump never pays his debts, but Sulzberger and his ilk somehow think he’ll be more likely to honor them when he has even less need to do so. They’ll find out how Putin treats journalists if he wins.

  9. On last night’s episode of “Hawaii 5-0” we’re getting toward the end of the series. We still have hundreds of episodes to watch, but we’re picking them at random. In this one, Jayne Meadows (!) is a celebrity astrologer. One of her clients is an amateur but very promising boxer. There’s gambling involved, of course there is, because no one on Oahu just led a quiet, middle-class life. I won’t bore you with the plot, but Jayne Meadows wears these amazing outfits, including hats with scarves attached that trail down almost to the floor behind her. Sunglasses so huge that Jackie O! would have been jealous. This episode is kind of a comedy, or a farce, which is weird.

    The old cast is gone, including my boyfriend Danno, so Steve McGarrett is relying on yet another native Hawaiian who looks as Hawaiian as I do (not at all) and this tough-talking chick with a vaguely New York accent, like some sort of reject from a “Cagney & Lacey” casting call.

    I learned recently that Jack Lord slowly but surely took over the show and then developed early-onset dementia. He terrorized the cast and crew. Eventually they had to wrap things up. All good things must come to an end.

  10. Meanwhile, I suppose in the spirit of objectivity, the NY Times profile of the GOP’s nominee for NC governor leaves out that he is a holocaust denier. The Times has also refused to cover that Trump repeated the neonazi lie that the Times is run by Jews. Or that CPAC, where Trump spoke, was swarming with literal Nazis.

  12. That porcupine is adorable! I know you’re not supposed to feed the critters, but if that guy was already well accustomed to getting fed, it could be more harmful to stop feeding it.

     

    My grandma used to have a squirrel that would come in the house, sit on the rug just inside the back door, and very politely take a couple of peanuts from her hand. She also had a cardinal that came to her bedroom window for peanuts and sunflower seeds. He brought his mate with him after awhile, but she was very shy and would only take seeds we dropped out the window.
