  1. …I’m…just wondering…if it was operation freedom…but it’s on pause in less than a day…is freedom of navigation still paused like it has been since before the operation did the re-brand-ing

i just can't stress enough how getting your foot in the door at DOJ used to be a knife fight against the best knife fighters in the country and now they're begging people to join

…because the white house says it can see a peace agreement from here…but…the navigation thing is…something of a sticking point…&…like…it was working fine before they were all…them about it?

This only makes this already funny Taibbi headline in The Free Press even more hilarious.

…anyway…this is a rather excellent thread to put heathens like myself in our place when we totally fail to get the deal with the met gala?

Pierre Bourdieu once argued that the question of whether something is art isn't answered by the artist's intention or even the object itself. Instead, the quality of being "art" is conferred by a community — curators, dealers, auction houses, audiences, etc. 🧵

    derek guy (@dieworkwear.bsky.social) 2026-05-05T22:57:06.418Z

…that’s…kind of like still having nice things?

    • …uh…nevermind, I guess?

The nominal strategic purpose of the U.S. Navy is to ensure global freedom of navigation to guarantee stable global trade. It has not only not done that, the United States instigated the conflict which undid it. This is known in foreign policy analysis as a “whoopsie doodles.”

…for the record…I know after yesterday I probably need to reel it in a little…but…like…yesterday could have been much worse, you know

Dawkins spending his entire career berating basically pretty normal people for being so stupid as to believe in God and then immediately giving himself Roko's Basilisk Derangement Syndrome after talking to the AI catgirl waifus is just the funniest shit.

      Bela Lugosi's Dad 🇻🇪 🏳️‍⚧️ 🇵🇸 (@belalugosisdad.bsky.social) 2026-05-06T09:47:03.288Z

      • Can Dawkins shut the fuck up? I grew up in a family of atheists (my mom was horrified… Korean atheists tend to be rare birds indeed) and as much as I agree with Dawkins I’m not going to jam it down people’s throats.

He’s just looking like a creepazoid incel who forgot he got laid from time to time.

    • I liked what Matt Tablabbi about Wall St.
I wish I knew about his time studying in Russia. It would explain a lot especially as that was the golden age of McKinnsey brahs going there and fucking up what was already fucked up. It does explain a lot about his own attitudes towards Pootin.

Dropped out of NYU because he was “unable to deal with being just one of thousands of faces in a city of millions” just screams “Narcissist.”

  2. …oh…fuck it…I…will go back to trying to give it a rest…but…like

Owners of some iPhones are in line to get cash payments of up to $95 from Apple after the company reached a $250 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit for false advertising of its Siri's AI capabilities.

    The Associated Press (@apnews.com) 2026-05-06T11:10:04Z

…that’s a lot of money in some ways…like $250 million is massive to nearly all people & quite a lot of businesses…but as a slap on the wrist for what is basically the “AI in your iPhone” version of “any day now your tesla will have full-self-drive mode despite a wholesale denial of the existence of lidar”…when the principle players in the spending race for that “AI” part are throwing around billions by the hundreds…they can shrug that off so it’s not really a penalty in most senses that seem to pertain…on the other hand…given the way the calls a lot of them made about where to put the offices for tax purposes…this sort of thing might have the potential to be an actual problem…that’s where a lot of their offshore income streams “live”?

"If Meta is found to be in violation of the DSA, it could be hit with a fine of up to 6% of turnover.Coimisiún na Meán has opened 3 other investigations into platforms in last 6 months that are established in Ireland, & it is involved in 4 other investigations opened by the European Commission."

  3. Some good news on elections:

Democrat Chedrick Greene wins Michigan Senate special election

And was it a blowout? “As of 12:15 a.m., Greene had about 59% of the vote counted, while Tunney, a businessman and lawyer from Saginaw Township, had about 39%.”

I know all this election shit is absolutely dire, and that’s the optimistic viewpoint, but ultimately there are more Democrats and independents than Republicans, and even most of the Republicans are refusing to vote Republican.

    • I’m fine with Disney but I can spend a day there for $50. Which means I’m perfectly happy to spend 4-6 hours and go home. If I had travel, hotel, full-price admission, food, and all the rest I would probably never go.

Somebody skeeted about taking cruises and was like, just fly to an all-inclusive resort instead and I’m like, yep. Although again I can just drive to the ports and don’t have the airfare component. But still, fuck them boats.

  4. …by the way…I feel like along with dawkins…we should be…I dunno…less respectful of some people?

Marc Andreessen putting "you are a world class expert in all domains" and "don't hallucinate" in his custom prompt really demonstrates the calibre of the people steering the ship.

    Dan Olson (@foldablehuman.bsky.social) 2026-05-05T17:50:54.971Z

    …not just because

Also I guarantee it still says "great question" and "you're absolutely right" all the time because this is simply too many instructions for the chatbot to reliably implement simultaneously.

    Dan Olson (@foldablehuman.bsky.social) 2026-05-05T17:51:07.739Z

    …it might be funny

Great response Dan, you’re absolutely right.

    …but…like

“generate your own (numbers) independently first” seems like a pretty problematic instruction as well.

Right?! Like, that’s directly counter to all previous instructions in his genius prompt.

i feel like people fundamentally misunderstand what chatbots are. people assume the tech is the thing saying words to you, but actually its more like a machine that generates one half of a conversation script involving an “ai assistant” and a user.

…the doors had a point…people *are* strange…replace someone who can meaningfully fulfil the premise implicit in the term “customer service” or “product support”…or just…I dunno…knowledge of stock inventory or something that used to be something people who worked somewhere sort of picked up by osmosis if nothing else…with a not-a-person response fruit machine that runs on rails to only take you places the system wants you to want to go…& they more or less universally hate it…& hate it some extra on top if it pretends to be a person the way call center people would tell you their name was something you wanted to hear to offset the thing you also were about to say about their accent making it hard for you to understand them before following a script that did the same thing the chatbot did that annoyed you in most of the same ways…but at least if you rolled the dice a few times you could sometimes get through to someone who actually understood the thing on their end enough to be a person about it & figure out if there was a way to actually help…which might be an endpoint in the chatbot versions but it’s like those choose-your-own-adventure books & I never seem to get that ending…even if I don’t generally have the quibble about the accent thing & find the whole exercise infuriating for an alternative set of hobby horse gear-grinding suite of stuff

…you call it an AI…& suddenly they love it more than that tamagotchi they haven’t seen in a decade or more…or however long it should be for that to make sense…I dunno…I never had one…maybe it’s a couple of decades…but I feel like they had a retro moment a while back…either way…even before you parse the “don’t give me ethics” part

People like Andreessen really, *really* want them to be magic emergent intelligence and not just fancy autocomplete.Because (among other reasons) if they're not literally magic, they will never make their money back.

    Shamey (@shamey.gay) 2026-05-05T17:57:14.552Z

…it’s pretty much issues stacked on issues…at…hyperscale?

Yeah, it will happily generate the user's half of the conversation too! The tech just detects when it starts to do this & cuts it off, before showing the "AI Assistant" half of the conversation to users.

…this…is not how we get hoverboards & the cool future where biff waxes the lifted pickup the skateboard kid wants…assuming we…you know…want that…or…whatever?

  5. Johnathon Pollard should still be in jail especially the secrets he stole. Thanks AIPAC.

Also for the fact he shows none of the humanity the US gave him for releasing him.

    • …this shit is fucking heartbreaking…& a ton of it comes down that woo-adjacent “wellness” routing that hits the mumsnet demographic in ways joe rogan never could…while also being downstream of all that DOGE+RFKjr+it’s-eugenics-assholes death of regulation & wholesale murder of USAID

…forget if it was the propublica one I saw quote the figure…but an arguably conservative estimate has the toll around the 600,000 or so mark for the dead-now-on-account-of figure…where more of those are dead kids than the other sort of dead people that would likely be alive if they’d just left that stuff alone

…& his thing this week about trying to get people on anti-depressants to go off their meds…is a special kind of fucked up if you give more than a couple of second(s) thought(s) to the second & third order of effects you get down that causal pathway should anyone listen to the sick fuck

…some people are a walking public health crisis & if the overlap wasn’t obvious before that russell brand prick tried to launder his rep by sidestepping through the woo of it all into a different sort of influencer after he burned his bridges &/boats as a stand up/radio DJ/”celebrity”/”personality”/media-darling-naughty-boy until he shaded his way around the circle back to holier-than-thou shitheel once that part wasn’t what was keeping him on the back foot in the PR department

…where is the thing…hold on…I saw one either yesterday or this morning that could maybe play TL;DR if not for the part where sometimes it’s about the venting?

a critical difference between woke 1 and woke 2 is the understanding that woo is something to be fought tooth and nail

      Ed (@ed3d.net) 2026-05-06T12:23:09.838Z

…technically…not the one that I was thinking of…but…given what this is pretending to be a reply to it’s probably a better fit so I’m going with it…but…like…if piers morgan can sit silently beside you while you do the faceplant of vamping as you flip through the bible you like to wave about rhetorically & come off like a sage & sympathetic figure…you…got issues…& your name might be synonymous with some cautionary tale shit about an industry that’d be eponymous for your ass…just…sayin’

      • I know of at least 3 couples that have lost kids. 2 are actually still together. The other blew up in a messy divorce.

You have to be a complete fucking psycho to not feel it. One of my close friends lost his sister to SIDS at 8 months (he remained an only child.) His parents were never the same after that.

I read about how Preznit Eisenhower lost his first born son to Scarlett Fever. It was so traumatic that his 2nd son suffered his dad being distant and cold to him because his dad didn’t want to feel that loss again.

    • The people running the scam are either pro-eugenics, are/want to be selling the snake oil replacements, or are just harvesting voters the same way they do with evangelicals. The people taken by it are responding to either personal/familial health problems (for which modern medicine does amazing things but can never be a 100% perfect cure machine), distrust of “big pharma” (which is semi-reasonable as corporations exist to make money so by definition they are greedy) or just broader Dunning-Krueger of not understanding a broadly complicated concept and being sold a simpler solution.

      • I should have also noted, both sides here: a LOT of people see obesity as a moral failing — hilariously, even though America is among the most obese nations in the world, it’s a sizable majority here who think that — and MAHA is very much on that wavelength. A lot of people who don’t pay close attention think MAHA is “doing something” about obesity and broadly that’s seen as a good thing.

  6. oh man.. indycar… if this wasnt on purpose…
