Monday Mood [5/6/23]

Hope everyone had an awesome weekend! My weekend was overly productive. I could stand to sit on the couch and do nothing for a bit.

My windows were open all day and I didn’t hear a thing

I love my rep!

They’re so mad about having to treat other human beings as such

Target, Bud, and Kohls stock is on sale.

Boycotts hit stocks hard. Here’s what might be next for Bud, Target and others caught in the anti-Pride backlash

    • Just recently I was mentioning that heds and leaders are often overlooked in online stories in the race to create something clickbait-worthy and get the story out the door. Do you know what I learned recently? When it’s mating seasons for the elk/elf they put out mating calls and that’s called “bugling”!

      Aren’t they magnificent.

As for DeSantis’s War on Woke: Yes, a lot of wokery is absurd, but on the other hand we’ve never had a true color-blind meritocracy in this country, not even in New York, where supposedly nothing matters except your competence and hustle. Believe me, where I went to school and my whole pre-work trajectory in general, including my extended foray in Europe, would have gone much differently if I looked like Better Half, and to this day there might be a cloud of suspicion over my academic credentials. “Oh, he went there. Affirmative action. That’s nice. Next.”

I think DeSantis was, in his double Ivy League way, attempting to quote Churchill. Let’s listen to the real one, who was probably more than a little drunk and sleep-deprived. Dunkirk had just been evacuated:

But yes, let’s pretend that a few elementary school librarians, if those even exist anymore, are the equivalent of an invading Fascist army. Moron. Even I am starting to see the appeal of Donald Trump. He obviously couldn’t give a shit about any of this. His three Supreme Court picks were unfortunate, but they were handed to him by Mitch McConnell, who got them from the Federalist Society. You think Donald Trump wants abortion outlawed nationwide? How many children would he have? He’s got five already, and Tiff was an obvious mistake that Marla refused to abort.

I think I should go back to my “Art Lover’s Guide to Rome” and regain perspective. I am fairly familiar with that was happening in Rome 2,000 years ago (it was the Golden Age of the Empire, and even better times were to come) but I can’t imagine that 2,000 years from now anyone will be around to study America from 2023, or if anyone is, why would they want to.

  1. There is no chance of progress when “woke” leftist media like CBS morning let’s Nikky Haley run her hateful mouth uninhibited. Wow.

  2. We have long suspected that Disgraced Former Governor Handsy was somehow aligned with the Mob, and it was almost certain that Dad was, and Mom actually came from a Mob family, I believe. However, these very well-founded suspicions were always dismissed by the Democratic Machine as grotesque anti-Italian stereotyping. It’s not only the Italians:

One case ended with the conviction of James Cahill, an ex-head of the powerful state building trades council who worked alongside former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other top officials to engineer labor agreements for major projects. Cahill admitted taking $100,000 in bribes and was caught on tape consorting with mobsters.

Nice. I’m a fan of Peaky Blinders. It’s good to know that NYC 2023 is like Birmingham, 1923.

    • Honestly, how fucking stupid do you have to be to touch a calf that belongs to a quarter-ton wild animal that’s going to be pissed? And that’s the female. The males are half a ton and have antlers.

    • Have I mentioned this already? When I was in college I briefly “dated” a guy who was barely 5′ tall. I loved snuggling with him and mentally, but never said this to his face, thought of him as “my elf.” Now of course I’ve gotten even huger, BH is 6′ 2″, we have the Faithful Hound who likes to sidle up between us…Space is at a premium at the Casa Encantada!

    • It’s just so damn stupid. One person got away with pandering to the MAGA vote and managed to hoodwink his way into the presidency. It’s not going to happen again. The MAGA vote is a subset of the electorate, and it’s not enough to win again.

You can’t pull this off by out-right-winging Trump. Honestly, DuhSantis can’t pull it off at all. No matter what, Trump is going to get a significant slice of the MAGA vote. NO MATTER WHAT. Even if he’s in jail. Even if he’s not officially on the ballot.

DuhSantis needs to strike now, I get it. He’s term-limited out of the Florida governorship and he’s going to get forgotten like Haydon Burns. He’s got to move now. But the strategy is completely wrong-headed. He should be positioning himself as sane Trump. But instead, people are looking at him and going, well, bad as Trump was, he’s not as crazy as this motherfucker.

  3. I’m not worried about Target, Bud, or Kohls stock. As Meg points out, this is a buy opportunity for some very solid brands. The “conservative backlash” that CNBC cites is wholly insufficient to permanently damage these companies. You’re going to see stock prices rebound, probably in a week.
