Monday Mood [DOT 11/11/24]

Hope everyone had a nice weekend! We finally got some rain here in DC after like 30+ days. Other than that, I oscillated between being super high and existential dread. And I already watched The Holiday twice.

Does anyone have some time this week to do a DOT for Friday and Saturday? I have to go to California for work.

  1. …it’s monday…which is seldom a good start…so…honestly I’m still casting about wondering where & how it makes sense to start to gain traction

…but…that maybe isn’t my first thoughts?

…to go back to the obeying in advance thing…& maybe a little bit to the stuff @bryanlsplinter was talking about yesterday

…there’s also the part where the principle beneficiary of this result in principal terms…the one who’s “richest” title rests on enough government money & leveraged cult behavior to be “in” a bunch of overlapping supply deals from NASA to DoD to chips & semi-conductors & data centres & batteries…&…china

    …fucking mondays

…oh…& for the record…I am not jonathan pie…but…then again…aren’t we all jonathan pie?

…don’t mind me…I’m just having a minor existential crisis…at this rate I may have to quit coffee & start drinking tea…it’s supposedly a birthright…&…maybe we’d all do well to cultivate more in common with chinese people?

[…I may be several sorts of heathen but I am aware it is both true & untrue that those aren’t the same sorts of tea…so…I don’t think they’ll cancel my birth certificate for saying that…but you can see where the existential crisis enters into the whole thing…right?]

    • In the US, millions of veterans and their families voted for the man who called those who died in action suckers and losers, and has a plan to slash their benefits. They simply don’t believe it. What’s left of our fact distribution systems are broken, and the people who run them won’t reckon with it. The problem is just the people on the receiving end, or the people who provide them with the facts, never them.

Today the only mention of Veterans Day on the NY Times homepage is a rerun of a five year old article.

  2. Racism and sexism infiltrates everything. I looked up The Wild Robot because the poster says it stars Lupita Nyong’o. You wouldn’t be able to tell unless you click on “cast” and scroll down. WTF? She’s the main character. As if I needed more evidence of the pervasiveness of sexism and racism to make me madder these days.

    • …so…this sounds anecdotal because I haven’t got the link handy…but I read a thing about how the netflix algorithm worked, mostly…but it had a thing about the thumbnail images you scroll through

…basically it picks a different image based on what it can find that overlaps with the things its decided you prefer rather than each title having a a standard image that’s served to every user

…the net effect is, as you say, potentially to bury the lead & it does seem like some element of the google version there has some implicit bias stuff going on

…oddly enough the thing with the images can do the reverse as easily as the same thing…but it’s not even a solution in search of a problem so much as something that thinks it’s a solution that causes more problems & didn’t seem to need solving?

…order of appearance…alphabetical by name of actor or character…the curious “billing” rules that govern when & for how long the name shows up in the credits…& how big the letters are…there’s more than enough ways to order a cast list without reinventing that wheel…but…it probably makes perfect sense of you’re an AI?
