    Which is ironic because in New York’s relatively long history (by American standards) the first European settlers, the Dutch, were constantly fending off Swedish aggressions from the south, New Sweden. Parts of what is now New Jersey were Swedish, Pennsylvania too, as was Delaware, and the biggest city, Wilmington, was originally called Christinahamm, after Queen Christina of Sweden. To this day there is a huge medical facility in Newark (pronounced New-ARK), Delaware called Christiania Hospital. That’s where Joe Biden apparently shows up from time to time while he’s back home.

  6. The whole Trump thing seems otherworldly, so many Democrats seem convinced that this is the thing that puts him over the top and it’s like … why, exactly? I still have yet to hear a cogent argument that this will suddenly open the floodgates of changed minds among voters. Is he really sympathetic especially given the shooter appears to be generally on his team? Is he not going to call for more violence this week (almost a guarantee)? I honestly don’t get it. He’ll get a media bump in the short-term probably but beyond that … what am I missing?

    • I suspect it’s because those are the same folks who were insisting that Joe had to go last week, and regardless of he fact that we *have* a VP who could still use Biden/Harris campaign funds, were scrambling to think of a “qualified person who could *possibly* beat Trump!”🙄🙄🙄

      I swear the douchecanoes running the party are *intent* on snatching Defeat from the jaws of Victory, at any & all costs🙃🫠

    • I don’t think you’re missing anything. Trump is going to do the exact same thing he’s always done, with calls for violence and everything else. I’ll never forget his request that some of his 2nd Amendment friends “take care” of Clinton. He should have been arrested that day. He’s not going to change or tone down his rhetoric. He’s not going to become “presidential.” He can’t — he doesn’t have the intellect. He’s just repeating pre-loaded crap. If I were betting, I’d bet that now he’s going to feel emboldened to go full fascist rather than embrace “civil discourse.”

      The only real problem is Democratic civility. They can’t let up on him because of this. Okay, back off for a week but then it’s back to “convicted felon, adjudicated rapist, destroyer of reproductive rights, Project 2025 overlord, corporate toady.” If they give him too long, it’s a mistake. Because he’s not going to return the favor.

       

    • It’s like really bad sportscasting, where there is a compulsion to preestablish a narrative and grimly stick to it even when facts show otherwise.

      “This is going to be a matchup between two of the best  quarterbacks….” and even if it turns out to be running backs and  special teams that do the scoring, they’ll look for any throw for six yards and a first down to justify everything they invested in the narrative.

      • I thought about that too, but so far it’s not panning out (so far being two days). As of today, Trump is still viewed unfavorably by 53.8% of the polled population, with 41.5% viewing him favorably according to Five Thirty-Eight, whom I do not trust but does do some aggregation. Most polls are showing a modest 1-2 point Trump bump, but still within the margin of error.

        blue dogcollar and I have both noted that it seems like the electorate has pretty much already made up their minds about Trump and Biden. This tends to confirm that. People who hate Trump and what he’s done aren’t going to reverse direction and embrace him because of this. And they’re going to vote for Biden regardless of this age nonsense. I’ve said it before, but I don’t believe in undecided voters. The ones that the media ‘locates’ are just Trump voters who are pretending to keep an open mind.

        The whole business of Trump “changing direction” is intriguing, but I’ll believe it when I see it. His base is comprised of unrelenting fanatics, and they’re not going to tolerate any sort of softer tone. You saw it last week when the evangelicals went apeshit over the Republicans trying to tone down abortion. Their own acceptable compromise is no compromise whatsoever, and that’s true of most of his base. They won’t stand for any type of measured approach. Hell, they can’t quit pushing abortion restrictions even though they know it’s killing them at the voting booth. Fanatics don’t work that way.

        • I am pretty sure all of the “well I am a (insert unusual demographic here) but I am voting for Trump this time!” or “I cant vote for Biden because of Gaza” posts I see online are bots. Because I agree with you. Most people are not in the middle/undecided anymore.

      • So there’s been some chatter about this but two things are worth noting: He was the president at the time and people were considerably more apt to “rally round” the guy in office back then than they are now and more importantly, that popularity bump has been historically pointed to as what set him up for his presidency but it was actually short-lived. His popularity was below what it was pre-shooting in less than two months. (And he was way more popular than Trump has ever been before the shooting.)

      • She was running out the clock, hoping he gets re-elected. Thomas gave her the opening in his statement about “special counsels have to be appointed by Congress.” It was a fringe right-wing theory and Thomas basically opened the door for it. Now the dismissal can get appealed … right up to the Supreme Court. And that will be that.

        • They won’t throw out the grounds for a special counsel appointment because they definitely want that in the hands of the AG, but they will play Calvinball with the rules.

      • …I’m guessing that there’s some legal minds out there who are…if not surprised…at least taken aback…after all more than one fellow judge suggested to her she ought to pass the buck since from the perspective of a real judge she was pissing all over the law

    I’m listening to his show right now & he speculated that the kid that shot Trump would have been a school shooter if Trump hadn’t rolled into town.  That sounds like a pretty good theory!  He also pointed out a weird coincidence, 80 years ago this week an assassination attempt on Hitler failed but left him mostly deaf in one ear!

    • Hartmann’s profile of the shooter feels right to me too. Bullied loner going out in a blaze of glory so everybody remembers him. Trump was convenient.

      And of course we have another stupid parent buying his kid a weapon. It never ends.

  12. I just went to Planet Fitness to get information about signing up (my first time in a gym in over a decade) and had a man aggressively staring me down the entire time. I had a pretty unexpected response, too (broke down in tears when I was out of his line of sight). Like, this is what I get for leaving the house! I first thought I was imagining it, but it was relentless and the staff person giving me the tour noticed, too. They even walked me to my car when I left. Thankfully they said they don’t fuck around with that sort of thing there.
