Monday Mood [DOT 2/12/24]

Still here in Ohio and it’s still snowing. Couldn’t leave the house all day Sunday and Monday is looking the same. I made a big pot of chili and there’s plenty of snacks.

      • I have no issue with letting Hunter off the hook. You’re correct — the whole shitshow was a MAGA fishing expedition. But yeah, there’s probably 50 things Joe could have done to stymie Trump 2.0 and he chose not to.

    • …I…get it, to some extent…it’s clearly fucked with him throughout to have held that stuff at arm’s length & let it play out…but look at what they’re bringing to the new table…kash…put money on that not letting hunter go gently into private life for another four stretch…& it does some genuine good to draw their teeth on keeping that bullshit soup on simmer

…but…it’s going to count like the difference between how he handled it up to this point & how stone & co got pardons…so…I get the downside part, too

…figure it’s a pretty human decision & the ones who say he shouldn’t have can say that easier than they could do it in his shoes

…but…don’t love the part where hypocrisy gets to be claimed by the hypocrites that made the distinction relevant in ways that somehow aren’t as screamingly obvious as they appear to me to be?

      • I heard some variant of this argument a lot last night when it was announced and … I just don’t think hypocrisy matters at all any more. The entire case is already predicated on the flimsiest political nonsense and it’s like yeah, of course the right will rend garments and shriek incoherently about it … but they were already doing that? That’s how it got to this point already? And if Biden didn’t pardon him they certainly wouldn’t be giving him credit for being high-minded.

That said, I don’t like the precedent for the Dems. But it’s nuts to think this will somehow free Trump’s hand more — the dude already did crazy self-interested pardons left, right and center in 2020 and 2021! The barn door’s already broken off its hinges.

    • Biden, for a lot of the good he has done, is part of the machine. The Hunter pardon is irrelevant, but will be weaponized for Maga.

Part of the issue is everyone, mainly the “centrist” left, acting like the old guard Dems aren’t adjacent to the extreme right.

They are in it to keep power, period.

Once again, “centrists,” have fucked us.

More people need to understand the move is to the left, not more fake centrists, but that would mean being uncomfortable, and that isn’t going to happen.

To be clear, I, at 46, am part of the problem, too a degree. I am not ready for revolution or even upheaval that would complicate my life, or, rather, I am not willing to start it.

Until we are ready, the people who aren’t already, to be uncomfortable, nothing matters.

    • Republican senators in January: “Kash promised us he wouldn’t weaponize the FBI so we feel comfortable voting for him.”

Republican senators in February: “We’re all quite dismayed at how Kash is weaponizing the FBI! He lied to us! There was nothing we could do at the time!”

      • “We are quite concerned about how the FBI is being used to manufacture cases against us too. It was supposed to be just Democrats. We’re drawing a red line that no more than 5% of us get charged… ooh, look at that latest case… no more than 10%…. um, we didn’t think they’d go after him, let’s make that red line no more than 20% before we take action.”

      • The ones who really need to be worried (but are too stupid) are people like Bezos, Zuckerberg, Zaslav and Sulzberger.

They moan and groan about regulation under Democrats from agencies like the FTC and FCC. But those agencies operated under strict rules, were subject to serious court limits, and almost never brought criminal cases. The fines rarely amounted to that much, either.

A weaponized FBI will be used against them, and the second Trump’s paranoia grows or some rival billionaire like Musk gets mad, it’s their staff, friends and family who get called in with demands to spill dirt on their patrons.

They think they can just ride this out because of magic faith in their status and righteousness. Authoritarians take what they want, and when they’re unstable what they want are scapegoats.
