Monday Mood [DOT 9/9/24]

Hope everyone had a great weekend! I went out to see an 80s band and I made a bunch of stuff with the apples I picked the other week. None of them turned out very well…they were ‘fine’ but I switched up my pie crust recipe and tried something new and it sucked.

Why didn’t they lockdown right away?

  1. I’m not making that face because … I’m on vacation! (And it’s my birthday today, which may be related to the first thing I said.)

But I also went apple picking over the weekend and have a metric shitload of them. I’m making some applesauce, some apple crisp and then a third as-of-yet undefined apple dish, so I’m very much watching this thread for suggestions.

      • So many Virgos!

Virgo is defined by precision, intellect, and incredible, rigorous focus. This sign is recognized for its analytical minds, meticulous attention to detail, and practical approach to life. Icons like Beyoncé, Keanu Reeves, Zendaya, Blake Lively, Idris Elba, Michael Jackson, and Salma Hayek exemplify the diligent and thoughtful qualities of this sign: Virgo excels at whatever they put their mind to. These earth signs possess an innate ability to notice what others might miss, making them excellent problem solvers and critical thinkers. What’s more, Virgos have a natural inclination toward order and efficiency, often thriving in environments where they can bring structure and clarity. Virgos excel at managing complex tasks and producing high-quality work, whether it’s a meticulously written novel, a scientific breakthrough, or a beautifully crafted piece of art (see: all of Beyoncé’s concept albums—literal masterpieces). Their practicality and reliability make them thoughtful, caring, and diligent friends, lovers, and colleagues.

As a Pisces this is all that I am not, although I am creative, slightly psychic, and do not sweat the small stuff. Or even really the big stuff. Order and efficiency? Go work in an Amazon warehouse if that’s what you want. Meanwhile, here in the Casa Encantada, chaos reigns, but everyone gets fed and drinks their fill, so I think, like Charlie Sheen, I am WINNING!

        • Virgo

You are a pain in the ass. You regulate your breathing and color-coordinate the clothes in your closet. No Virgo in history has ever belched. Virgos clean every square inch of everything they own twice daily with a toothbrush. Everything has its place, and yours is on the floor scrubbing with a magnifying glass, checking for germs. Obsessive-compulsive disorder? A nice euphemism for the word “Virgo”. Virgos use pointers and elaborate charts to describe philosophical concepts. You commit a lot of drive-by shootings. When you are questioned, you tell the police that it was because “the bastard had a filthy car”. The police usually let you go because they are Virgos too. It is easy to freak out a Virgo. Tell them they have something between their teeth. Then watch them scrub frantically at the imaginary thing. Virgos are a hell of a lot of fun for assholes like us. Hell for a Virgo is being locked up in an elevator for eternity with a naked Aquarius. That is because in hell, Aquarians are allowed to bring beer, which they leave all over the floor. Virgos, however, have to surrender their brooms and squeegees to God. Virgos also have a hard time coping when they find out there’s something under the fridge. But it’s usually just a depressed Taurus. Virgos have read enough Hints from Heloise to know that the depressed Taurus can be coaxed out from under the fridge with a banana wine cooler. Virgos don’t see the world in shades of black and white. They see it in shades of clean and dirty. Cat hair makes Virgos foam at the mouth. Virgos are cool because they will do your laundry for you. They’ll separate everything by color and fabric until it consists of fourteen loads of three things apiece. Then they will put them in the washer in alphabetical order by name of manufacturer. Virgos are often found opening and shutting the refrigerator door, attempting to trick the light inside. Don’t put cheese where it doesn’t belong in a Virgo’s refrigerator. He or she will go Jack Torrence on your ass. You will be stabbed with a cuticle pusher. Jack Torrence was probably a Virgo in the first half of “The Shining”. After that, he went all Leo.

          I enjoy the parody ones….

  2. Back when Slate contrarianism was a thing, I remember they had an article telling people they were wrong for going apple picking because it was uneconomical. Of course they missed that people do it for the same reason they go strolling around cherry blossoms in the spring or sing carols at Christmastime.

      • The fact she won the Pulizer for her supposedly best in class commentary on the 2016 election is all you need to know the Pulitzer Prize commitee is just an annual Elks or Rotary Club awards meeting run by a few board members to distribute Man of the Year awards among a small,  dwindling circle of pals.

  3. We talked about this a bit yesterday about Florida sending thugs around to “check” the signatures for the abortion amendment. The deadline to challenge signatures is long past. Apparently the new Republican tactic is to send stormtroopers around to harass and intimidate voters.

GOP chooses voter suppression over voter outreach

DeSantis goes all-in against Florida’s abortion rights amendment

Trump threatens prosecution of 2024 election officials if he wins presidency

DeSantis is also using a taxpayer-funded website to promote disinformation and lies under the guise of “transparency.”

On the one hand, this is bullshit. On the other hand, you can see how scared they are.

    • I’m still looking  for an awareness from the press that threats of prosecution means them too. I really hope they don’t learn the hard way, although to be honest I expect we’ll see some on the state level no matter what.

    • We’re currently waiting for word over here from the Missouri Supreme Court to see if our own abortion amendment will appear on the ballot in November, after a couple of Republican congresswomen challenged its presence and an equally Republican judge* (who was recently appointed as such by our governor from guess which party, after serving as his general counsel) ruled, just ahead of the printing deadline, that the amendment was invalid because it didn’t state which laws would be repealed.

*”Fun” fact: The judge in question also happens to be Rush Limbaugh’s cousin.

    • The press’ refusal to deal with this is journalistic malpractice. If Joe had said one of these things two months ago, we’d still be looking at front-page headlines about it.

      • One thing that shows their nuttiness is that the worst case scenario for Biden fading out is he would have handed over the government to Harris, or else stayed in place in a fog while the agencies of the government hummed along with the secretaries, boards and adminstrators in place.

The worst case scenario for Trump breaking down is absolute chaos.

There is no rational risk analysis at work. And what’s more, going with the honest full fledged narrative of Trump’s breakdown would be good for ratings. People don’t want to hear sandblasted accounts of his supposed economic policy. They are drawn to stories of mental collapse.

What they’re doing is based purely on their psychology, ideology, and weird internal culture issues.

  4. For another example of what’s wrong with media execs, Tom Brady debuted his broadcasting career and he was not good.

    https://www.wusf.org/sports/2024-09-09/tom-brady-takes-awkward-first-steps-transition-fox-tv-booth

Fox committed to a 10 year, $375 million contract for their top profit center’s critical broadcasts, and they did it without any idea if Brady could do the job.

They tried to capitalize on his name recognition, except they forgot how quickly audiences forget careers and think about announcers in terms of their personalities. And Brady has never been known to have much of one.

A good organization builds from the bottom up and promotes based on demonstrated talent. This was a couple of execs listening to an agent’s pitch, jumping out of fear of a couple of rivals, then signalling to lower level staff this was a done deal and it was up to them to make it happen.

It’s always possible he becomes that “well, he’s not the worst” level talents. But when inevitable cuts come at the network, his contract is going to be a reminder of how skewed exec priorities are.

    • Well CBS didn’t do that with Tony Romo but they got lucky and he was good right out of the gate.
I didn’t watch the game but for now I’m willing to give Tom a chance to acclimate. Most football people are stiff and lacking in personality when they start broadcasting. Tony Dungy was fucking horrid his first year and that was a studio gig in a controlled environment. By the second year he was a little more comfortable and now he’s great.

      • It’s possible, but for every up you have a down, and that’s why you don’t pay $375 million for 10 years. You will get far more bang for the buck and greatly increase your odds of finding a star if you hire a bunch of guys for one percent of that and see who works.

He’s had two years to get ready too. They easily had the ability to put him in a practice booth watching games with a fake play by play guy and the same video feed as the regulars so he could learn how it works. Whatever they were doing to prep him was a mess, or else he refused to do the work, or just can’t.

I think it’s one of those skills like driving an 18 wheeler where execs think it’s just like driving an SUV only bigger. There are some transferrable skills, but it’s really different and a lot of people just can’t switch.
