Scientists are working to understand the biological causes of aging in the hope of one day being able to offer tools to slow or stop its visible signs and, more important, age-related diseases. These underlying mechanisms are often called “the hallmarks of aging.” Many fall into two broad categories: general wear and tear on a cellular level, and the body’s decreasing ability to remove old or dysfunctional cells and proteins.

“The crucial thing about the hallmarks is that they are things that go wrong during aging, and if you reverse them,” you stand to live longer or be healthier while you age, said Dame Linda Partridge, a professorial research fellow in the division of biosciences at University College London who helped develop the aging hallmarks framework.

So far, the research has primarily been conducted in animals, but experts are gradually expanding into humans. In the meantime, understanding how aging works can help us put advice and information about the latest “breakthrough” into context, said Venki Ramakrishnan, a biochemist and Nobel laureate who wrote about many of the hallmarks of aging in his new book, “Why We Die: The New Science of Aging and the Quest for Immortality.”

Why Do We Age? Scientists Are Figuring It Out. [NYT]

…telomeres are involved…if I remember rightly…& my mind hasn’t gone…but…last I checked…if we crack the immortality thing…either only the ones who can afford it get to live forever…which seems like an express route to the shittiest version of how things currently stand…or everyone does…&…if you think about that for more than about a minute I’d be shocked if you don’t run up hard against some pretty god-awful side-effects

…not saying we should all go take a long walk off a short cliff for the sake of the planet…but…the mortal part of this mortal coil might be a feature not a bug…it’s just a thought…but maybe I’m just trying to reassure myself because it feels like I age noticeably every time I scan the headlines…& the idea of that being something I can look forward to on an infinite schedule doesn’t exactly make me feel like a god or anything…arguably more like it has me feeling that sympathy for the devil that’s so catchy

  1. I rarely do the “I saw this in sci-fi” but taking away the time frame limitations on human life seems like a really, really, REALLY bad idea, especially as you say, knowing our society and who would be able to access the extra life.

Now, in theory? Great study! It would be wonderful to make later years more comfortable and maybe give more people the chance to live less-restricted lives into their 90s, 100s or whatever … but it’s so much more likely to be used to ensure Peter Thiel gets 3 extra years of life to try and fuck the rest of humanity at the cost of eleventy-billion dollars a week …

    • …maybe if I spend more time in bed, I’ll live longer?

      …worked for charlie bucket’s grandparents

      …oh, & sky-hooks

…I’d take having those, too…if we’re just gonna go off re-writing the fundamental elements of the world according to man…they seem neat

…& of more potential value than the sort we continue to find literally & figuratively in burning the joint down around our ears & huffing the fumes until modern politics looks like it makes sense…or commerce…or…fuck it…the whole damn shooting match the way it feels at the minute

…maybe the key is I go back to bed to keep getting out of different sides of it until I find out which wouldn’t have been the wrong one?

      • Some people say Oompa-Loompas are the least realistic thing in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Others scoff at a magic glass elevator. You might even question the physics of a drink that can make you lighter than air. Me, I say it’s Grandpa Charlie getting up from bed for the first time in 20 years with no muscle damage. Either he’s a big fat liar — very possible! — or else he needs to be studied to see what his cells know.

        • They say it’s coke.

Apparently, in the original movie, Gramps has what looks like a coke pinky nail.

        • …if you haven’t read it…there’s a damn good chance based on that remark that you’d enjoy jasper fforde’s “the fourth bear”

…personally I can’t find a crack in his analysis of the crime scene at the home of the three bears that poor goldilocks kid got sent down the river for

…might be a confusing protest to take to the streets for but injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere, I’ve heard?

      • …it’s no good

        …I’ve only gone & bloody over-thought the thing like a muppet, haven’t I?

…there’s muggins thinking about how to up my odds of not getting out of the wrong side of bed…& I’ve already whistled right along to the point where it seems clear you’ve got a 1 in 4 chance of it being unavailable if the thing has the head backed up to a board or a wall it whatever

…& a probability of .25 is above the bar for statistical significance…by of the order of five times the default…or half an order of magnitude

…but…it’s a dreadful wager that pascal would probably bet you’ve got the wrong way around

…right first time is a count of 1 right to 0 wrong for a score of…all right…which in its day to day outfit isn’t much to get excited about

        …otherwise…wrong:right?

        • 1:0
        • 1:1
        • 2:0
        • 2:1
        • 3:0
        • 3:1

…always assuming 4:0 isn’t a spot you make room for on the venn diagram…even if that might actually help…because 2 wrongs = 1 right so you can stack the adjusted deck to

        • 1:0
        • 1:1
        • 0:1
        • 0:2
        • 1:1
        • 1:2
        • [0:2]

…I don’t like those odds…& if it resets each time so the odds stick at 1 in four that it’ll be all right…that still sucks

…so…if you make the bed circular…well…on second thoughts if it’s all the same side then the wrong side is the right side & getting out of bed seem like a disaster of an idea…even if the universe doesn’t decide you’re being cheeky & murder you out of spite with its bare entropy

…I may have some inherited bias about the sort of person who has a bed with curved edges…call it an unconscious prejudice…or…semi-conscious…part-woke, if you like…so…not exactly an option I’d take seriously

        …which I’m sure you’ll agree is a relief

…since…if getting out of the wrong side of bed can be the same as getting out the right side

…I think my part in this might be more correlative than causative…which is a weight off…someone probably ought to let that atlas fella know…he & sisyphus could probably stand to cut themselves some slack

…but whoever’s responsible for dropping all kinds of balls all over the shop…apparently so we can maintain a death-grip on the fucking idiot ball?

…feels like them & me might could have words…in this life or the next

      • You could try the Lieutenant Dunbar approach to extending your life through boredom.

    • I don’t want to live forever. I’m seeing what old age and dementia is doing to my parents.

It hurts and I don’t want that kind of future for most folks (except for people like Peter T and Emol.)

      • I think the theory is that reversing or stalling the aging process would allow more time before people had to worry about things of that nature. Which would be great! And I wouldn’t say no to a few extra good years of life. Living forever? Noooooooo thanks, that sounds like hell.

        • That’s true, but the studies on dementia shows that it begins much earlier than we realize.

If we want to enjoy our old age then we have to start now.

          I don’t think folks realize that (I didn’t.)

Strangely enough, my parents were almost fanatical about watching what they ate and exercising till dad’s mid 80s and mom’s late 70s.

      • I don’t want to live forever. I just desperate want major ecological collapse to not happen in my life. Because I don’t want to live in a world that looks like a sci-fi novel after the dumbasses killed their climate and living too long will definitely do that.

      • Agreed. My grandpa is 94 and dealing with alzheimers. My grandma on the other side was 88 when she passed and had the start of it. The two grandparents that didn’t have it died before it could manifest. I think we’re living too long, at least in the west (idk what the prevalence is in places like Japan and S Korea where they tend to have better diets). I have ZERO desire to live to be 100 and riddled with health issues and cheese brain. I’d be a ward of the state anyway, what with having no kids/spouse.

  2. Also that bridge video in Baltimore is wild, it looks like a 90s disaster movie in the way it happened so fast.

While there are going to be many takes coming, I will note as the son of a structural engineer and bridge inspector that no level of bridge building quality — especially for a cantilever bridge, which is built to have fewer anchor points to allow for easier movement on a waterway — is going to be enough to prevent a giant tanker from taking out a pillar and the whole thing coming down.

    • Yeah it folded fast, but also, there was no other outcome given the size of the ship that hit it.

    • Yeah, the big question is not how, but why. Was somebody literally asleep at the wheel of that ship?

      • …heard something on the BBC I think said that there’d been a distress call to say they lost power &/or control some time before the impact

…but I’m light on detail & I know what that bit of flashback audio means in the hollywood movie version so I’m mostly hoping for the innocent version of the least-worst-option to turn out to be how it happened?

        • They were able to get traffic blocked onto the bridge before impact so I assume that followed the call about losing control.

      • From what I’ve seen/heard: The ship was moving and lost power and was not able to maneuver, they let people know and authorities stopped people from getting on the bridge and tried to get cars/workers off it but it happened too quickly to get everyone off.

From early reports this sounds a lot more like a boat issue and not an infrastructure problem. It sounds like everyone reacted about as quickly as they could to the oncoming danger.

    • The only way to stop a ship that big is to have it run aground, and of course shallow water and major shipping channels don’t go hand in hand.

It’s pretty wild how big those ships are. Even from a mile away you can tell they’re absolute beasts. And when you see them approaching ports it’s stunning how they end up threading needles getting under bridges and steering through channels.

  3. What I need to know is did Diddy do it?

    https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/sean-diddy-combs-federal-investigation-homes-searched-rcna145006

    Good job Mike!

    https://politicalwire.com/2024/03/25/mike-gallagher-screwed-gop-leadership-on-the-way-out/

It was refreshing to see that just about every MSNBC host yesterday dedicated a segment to rebuking the hiring of McDaniel…

    https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/rachel-maddow-nbc-ronna-mcdaniel-hiring-reverse-1234994316/

    • I wouldn’t be surprised if Diddy did it. I also wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of other  musicians did the same thing. And actors, etc. I’m still waiting to see if any charges come out this week against former Nickelodeon staff after that docuseries came out.

      • That Nickelodeon doc was so hard to watch 🙁

    • I’m a strong believer in “innocent until proven guilty” but LOL Diddy sooooo did it, at least the sexual assault parts of it, for sure. Again, he deserves his fair day in court, but I think we all kinda get at this point that nobody racks up decades of allegations from teenagers if they are fully clean and above-board. (And “trafficking” tends to make people think of sex slaves being trucked places in hidden compartments but it’s also as simple as “I bought her a plane ticket and she came to see me and we had sex.”)

The guns stuff seems at the very least on-brand; they were everywhere in the rap scene when he was coming up, so I can’t pretend to be like shocked at the idea he might be illegally handling them.

      • …you know that thing they say how about how some things just write themselves?

        Diddy Done?

        Diddy Done Dirty?

        Did Diddy?

        Diddy Did: Done

Do Diddy: Diddy Did, Diddy Done

…slap a beat to it…throw in some autotune & the sort of dubious video that makes you wonder how much of that bling is made up of conflict diamonds

…you might have hit on your hands?

      • Agreed. At a certain point the sheer volume of accusations is a pretty clear indicator that something was going on.

    • One of the things that doesn’t get enough play is that on air personalities saw a lot of death threats from election deniers. Ronna Romney McDaniel and the RNC egging them on while attacking MSNBC as complicit added a lot to what Trump and others were doing.

Chuck Todd has said he had to get security for his family while this was going on. Execs hiring her are failing to have the backs of their own people.

The efforts to frame this as just disagreeing with her politics and saying she’s just like any other hiring of a partisan is gross. It’s intentionally sandblasting away major distinctions in an attempt to cheapshot reporters who are spelling out exactly what the issues are.

      • …it seems like pretty much anyone getting any kind of play that isn’t all in on the MAGA lunacy…& a whole spread of ones that are…have all been getting death threats for years now

…along with what at times seems credibly like it might be every single woman (as in individual since their marital status doesn’t seem to make a lick of difference) with the temerity to have a digital footprint that can be tracked down

…I certainly buy that they spiked…but it’s not like I’d really believe they were new or unexpected under the circumstances?

      • Always has to be said: Conservatives hate affirmative action … until it comes to getting conservatives hired on TV news. And then it’s like “Where’s MY spot?” and “Why are you discriminating against me?”

And only the media would be dumb enough to hire people who openly advocated — or very cheerfully clapped along to the song — for their murder. It’s truly like an abusive relationship that the media keeps thinking is going to turn around.

  4. I am in a HUMAN CENTIPEDE of meetings this week. The only reason I am even whorfing this bowl of cereal right now is because one of my meetings ended early. Otherwise, NO LUNCH FOR YOU. And I have to create “development plans” (per management) for 4 of my team by Friday. When? Idk. What’s a development plan? IDK.

    • …chart all four development plans into developing them into your personal footmen/handmaidens(delete as applicable)

      …win/win?

…plus maybe one of them will be handy in a kitchen

…I remember a rather important lady lawyer once admitting to me that if she could have free rein on the hiring criteria for her next assistant the top of the list would be “short order thai chef skills”…because she didn’t get out much from behind her desk & she liked thai food

…she figured that would do her more good than another fledgling lawyer she had to mentor at least as much as they helped even the load?
