Oh Yeah! [DOT 15/7/23]

It’s the weekend! Got any good plans? I’m going to run over to the farmers’ market and pick up my CSA. Then I’ll spend the rest of the day figuring out what to do with all this cabbage.

This week was honestly exhausting. Especially with the losing of a coworker and his calling hours and funeral.

How about you?

Is this the guy you want to piss off?

Doh!

      • How much do you have to be exposed to for it being so bad you need hospitalization? Fucking babies.

I’m pretty sure 2/3 of Jefferson county near me is exposed to meth on a regular basis.

        • The same groups of sleazy consultants which get hired to teach police to shoot first and ask questions later are now going around to departments pitching drug “safety” seminars.

They’re full of crazy misinformation which tells cops being in the same room as a packet of drugs is dangerous, and telling them that any of the normal signs of being on the job are potentially indications of fatal exposure. Feeling any stress as you walk through a scene? That could be deadly drugs! And of course that kind of fake training makes police panic.

      • …when I saw it earlier the part casting doubt on their need to seek medical assistance for “exposure” to meth in a similar manner to the “touching fentanyl can kill you” thing that seems to never really go away these days & which can at  least be true under narrow circumstances is that for meth the toxic effects require it to be in your bloodstream in higher concentrations than seem reasonable to induce through contact alone…not being aware of any aerosolized meth delivery systems that leaves…I dunno…running naked out of a sauna & rolling around in enough powder to simulate a snow drift?

…I don’t want to judge what they might get up to in their off hours but that doesn’t strike me as acceptable on-the-job behavior?

  1. I’ve seen some folks try to compare the actors to the old argument of billionaires to millionaires when you see mlb players go on strike. Even seen a wingnut stupidly point out all the little people being affected (and they most definitely are) BUT not getting the Execubot AI plans of converting actors into AI avatars would also wipe out all the jobs of people (do AIs feed on electric smoked salmon?) who do all the necessary grunt work on a set.

    Fuck the execubots.

    • …I forget which comedian it was…possibly chris rock…maybe dave chappelle…whoever…but someone once pointed out that the difference is we look at well paid celebrities…think their example was shaq…& think “damn, wish I got paid shaq money”…& when those people mess up or do something we don’t like they make good targets for being pissed at for making out like bandits (despite the part where they’re outliers in a career in which your chances of never making a living vs being set for life are lottery-like odds & the commitment to trying needs you to be all in either way – with bonus health risks for sports & action movies) while the rest of us toil to get the bills paid

…when what we should be taking aim at…either in aspirational terms or those of redress & fair compensation…is the infintely less well known name that signs the checks for the account that keeps the one shaq draws his pay check from in funds

…dolly parton…because she’s dolly parton & can get away with it, called it the difference between rich & “hick rich”…in that if you strike it rich in a way that means once you’ve bought you or your kin a new car or two or maybe even a home & stood a few rounds for a few folks you’re back where you started…that’d be hick rich…not the kind that lasts

…if you can buy the land to run a self-styled theme park that pays a steady cheque to a significant chunk of the local population while pulling in wallets from further afield to spread a little more cash around the local economy…that’s a better kind of rich to aim for?

      • One of the interesting little developments in the US is that minor league baseball players broke the rationalization for their lousy conditions and wages on the grounds that they might win the lottery.

They spent a ton of time organizing and won union recognition. There’s hugely more work to be done, and the owners are doing a lot of stupid downsizing, but it’s a notable step. People just aren’t swallowing the anti-union line as much these days.

This is an article by former Deadspin writer Emma Baccellieri.

        • …there are a lot of people trying to get a lot of unions established in the states these days…I keep seeing attempts from all sorts of industries…from the obvious to some pretty niche concerns

…but with a few encouraging exceptions here & there the bulk of them tend to come to my attention in tandem with a lot of the same underhanded asymmetric “negotiation” tactics that make the papers when it’s amazon/starbucks/hollywood or even NYT/wirecutter…but not so much for…anime dub voiceover actors or something else most of us don’t think about in an out-of-sight-out-of-mind sort of a way

…in general I think it’s more of a positive trend than parts of the wire or some of the tales of hoffa-era teamsters or whatever would seem to indicate…but I guess I sometimes wonder where the balance is

…there’s a fairly massive teachers union in the UK but that hasn’t been able to prevent the depredations of government under an “austerity” flavored tory government

…the nurses & junior doctors just the other day made rishi U-turn on accepting the raises offered by a pay review board which he previously said were unaffordable

…& since on the one hand they’d be fine if this was just now becoming a problem…but would have to be about six-fold the offer to bring their real-terms pay back into line with where it was before the hand that fed was conservative

…& on the other he swiftly followed it up by pledging it wouldn’t be paid for out of either increased taxes or government borrowing…the “efficiencies” he’s looking to enforce on the public sector are cuts explicitly designed to look like the NHS staff having the temerity to expect to be able to pay their bills is the reason your local social care program got cancelled

…meanwhile transport strikes like the ones fucking with flights in holiday season or the railway/public transport stuff that periodically kicks off in the UK are all pretty hard to make friends with even when people think your cause is righteous…not least because to have that sort of impact & profile in the modern age the leader of the union by that point is a tabloid caricature of intransigence

…still more pros than cons, it seems to me…but there are a few cons that seem to be greater in degree once the union grows beyond a certain size…& some industries in which a union below that size won’t swing enough weight to right the balance between employer & employed?

  2. Also re: all the cabbage

Homemade sauerkraut is surprisingly easy to make (cabbage, non-iodine salt, quart jars, cool place) and when I’ve made it in the past a big head of cabbage makes like a quart of sauerkraut.

  3. accidentally stumbled across the perfect example of the difference between europes and the usa aproach to military funding

coz you know we tell our lot to conserve ammo if possible

    hahahaha okay *big smile*

oh murica…you made that germans day
