OMG Friday [DOT 15/7/22]

Thanks lil baby jebus.

Longest week ever! Sorry I haven’t been around to star every comment like you know I like to do!

I’ve mostly been asleep. But I’m feeling much better and looking forward to a weekend of continued rest and relaxation.

My mother always said if you can’t say something nice then don’t say anything at all.

  1. I was hoping you’d mention Ivana and if you didn’t, believe me I would have in these comments. I was very saddened to hear of her passing because for me, this news seems to mean that the 80s are well and truly over.

If you’d like to read more about this extraordinary woman, today’s New York Post has no fewer than 13 articles about her. There is a lot of cross-contributing, because even the most devoted Ivana watcher has only so much to say. But well they might devote 13 articles to her, because in the 1980s she was practically their patron saint, and her bombshell divorce in 1992 probably generated enough income to pay the entire newsroom staff’s salaries for a month.

In my memory they didn’t dwell on The Donald that much, except for his multiple deals and subsequents failures and bankruptcies; for that of course we relied on Spy Magazine, which couldn’t get enough of him, so I decided to visit the Spy Archive:

    https://archive.org/details/SpyMagazine/Spy%20Magazine%201986-1998/1986/1986-10-OCT/

(The URL takes you to the 10/86 edition because that was the first one, but the entire run is preserved cover to cover.)

I visit the Spy Archive every so often and every time I do it’s like attending a school reunion: people and events come drifting back from the past, old friends reunited, highs and lows relived. I picked the 12/89 issue at random and there was a reference to something called the Tour De Trump. I figured that was a euphemism but no, it was exactly what it sounds like: Donald Trump, in one of his harebrained schemes, decided to create an American version of the Tour de France (going on now and something I should have mentioned in yesterday’s DOT, along with the new revelations about Macron basically being Uber’s France sales rep.) You can read about it here:

    https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/04/donald-trump-2016-tour-de-trump-bike-race-213801/

Notice, with grim hindsight, that the article was published April 10, 2016, and the author bio notes that the writer is currently working on a book on “fringe” American presidential candidates. How naive we all were in April of 2016.

      • Well, yes, she’s got less to answer for. However, she managed to spawn three sociopaths. Even though she’s apparently been fairly inoffensive since then, I’m not inclined to give her a pass for inflicting Dumb, Dumber, and Daddy’s Girl on humanity.

        • True, she wasn’t a prize personality wise, but they’re daddy’s kids. He made’em what they are today (like his dad did to him.)

And the fact she wasn’t endlessly parading in front of the camera unlike her ex hubby doesn’t hurt (Pizza Hut commercials not withstanding.)

    • When I saw the headline yesterday “Trump dead” , for one minute I felt peace again in life.  Then I saw the rest of the story & fuck fuck fuck!!!!

      • I am currently okay with Trump’s continued existence. He’s rapidly becoming the Republican Party’s worst nightmare. I kinda hope he’ll run again to derail that shitstain DeSantis. Because if that fucker gets elected, we’re going to see lots more swastikas.

        • I heard the dream scenario of this.  He runs and loses to DeSatin in the primary so decides to run as an independent which splits the party and Dems easily keep presidency.  I would really rather see Manchin dead more than Trump at this point.

    • For the hottest volcano action he should have hiked where he shouldn’t have up Mt. Etna in Sicily. I doubt this would have mattered much to him, but he could have stayed conveniently nearby in Taormina, Sicily’s only real glam hotspot, aside from some really small towns and off-shore islands.

  2. The Wall Street Journal editorial page ran an editorial accusing Biden of making up the story of the 10 year old girl who was raped and sought an abortion. It was a part of a widespread right wing media counteroffensive.

And then the story was verified. Does the WSJ apologize, retract and correct? No, they just add an editors note saying “well, we didn’t get the information, so the editorial stands.”

And then they ran another piece saying passions run too high, so let’s all just relax. After, of course, they tried to make the story take off to their advantage.

The NY Times opinion page ran a factually wrong piece about abortion and ectopic pregnancy from ine of their cadre of concern troll apologists for the right, and refused to fix it.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/07/12/new-york-times-essay-ectopic-pregnancy-error

The right got what it wanted, the effects are going to continue to get worse, and the elites in charge of punditworld are bending over backwards to wish it all away.

    • I saw that. I expect no better from the WSJ. They’re only slightly less partisan than Fox News at this point. Actually, they may be more partisan but manage to generate a bit more effective thin veneer of objectivity. And the NYT is, well … the less said, the better.
