Outdoor Plans for the Summer? [NOT 23/3/23]

Hi, friends!

Yesterday I managed to put together a tumbler composter! Despite the instructions being incredibly vague!

This summer I’m hoping to make compost. We’ll see how that goes.

Do you have any plans for summer stuff this year that is different? The compost is my big garden excitement this year.

  1. As a city-farm transplant, I have to say that compost is surprisingly satisfying.

We also use something called “sheep manure tea” which is not nearly as delicious as it sounds.

      • You know, she is surprisingly good about not doing shit she’s not supposed to.  Mrs. Butcher mentioned once how Butcher Dog never went through a manic puppy chewing phase.  She will only chew things that we give her as “hers” to chew.  The most trouble she gets in is being way too happy to see people and wanting to get all over them, when that is not the rule.

She does get super agitated though, if I make her wait too long to do her run and jump into the lake.  She’ll bark at me like she’s saying, “hurry up, goddammit!”

    • I’ll probably have an update in 2 months, or sooner if it goes badly. 🙂

Supposedly you can go from waste to compost in as few as 3 weeks, but also I think that presumes a lot more heat than I have until we’re in July/August here.

  2. We’ve had a compost bin forever & put all our coffee grounds in there.  The earthworms go crazy & seem to breakdown the compost quicker when high on caffeine.  I also put my spent grains & hops in there after brewing.

My outdoor projects include finishing the stone walkway to the front door, yearly deck maintenance, fixing a leaning trellis, & a new birdbath for the hummingbirds.

  3. It was supposed to be the summer for a new driveway but having to put in a new heat pump put the kibosh on that. New patio furniture would be nice.

  4. I want to be outside as much as possible. Will plant some veggies and herbs. Will continue to go to monthly orienteering meets here if my schedule allows. And lots of hiking and/or trail running. More birding, too.

  5. Kayaking is my favorite water sport. We got an inflatable paddle board two years ago because it fit in our car. It’s fun but I’m not great at standing up and balancing for long periods of time. Now that we have an SUV and “free” money to spend (a self-care bonus from work that can only go towards sporting goods or a gym membership), we’re getting a kayak. I’m super excited!
