Panic! At the workplace [NOT 18/10/23]

I hope your day is going well! We’ve entered our annual “oh fuck errybody has last minute crap they need done this year phase.”

Does your workplace have a similar cadence?

  1. I’ve had a few Decembers where there’s been an unrealistic scramble to get items checked off a list before the odometer reset to zero. It’s meant wasting time trying to get people together on December 21st or 30th to make something happen even though everyone knows all along it’s not happening.

  5. We got stupid season year around but our bosses (current) were caught with their pants down last month.

    They spent last week yelling at us but I pointed out quietly that we worker bees never created the systems we work with. Our idiot managers did and they did nothing till our new owners noticed that things were kinda fucked up then the shit flew.

    Personally, I don’t think management is going to survive because all signs keep pointing at them and our new owners seem ruthless enough to cut heads when necessary.

    I would be looking for a new job if I were them as I have a pretty good instinct for bad things like this and I am not arrogant to think I would survive a purge of old management if I were them. Management being morons is not only a crime but also their punishment.

  6. In a way, working in US public education is a *bit* of an advantage, over the typical “end of year” stuff–‘cuz *our* E.O.Y. isn’t when the *rest* of the country/state is dealing with that stuff, so it’s *slightly* less stressful.

     

    But it also means that for the Healthcare & “making sure the proper taxes are paid” stuff, you’re *screwed* if you forgot to get your “next year” stuff–which will start in *September* done allll the way back in May/June!

    If you forgot to change health plan options?

    Too bad, no take-backsies! If you forgot to up the amount going into your HSA or Retirement account?

    Tooooooo bad–you missed the window to change it for *this* year!(read: *NEXT* fall’s school year!)🙃

    On the other-other hand?

    It *is* sorta nice, only having your health insurance deducted from your paychecks from September through May…

    But *remembering* to get ALL your paperwork *DONE*, during the busiest, craziest, and most stressful time of the school year?

    A *bit* stressful, too!😆🤣💖

  7. its the quiet time of year at my work…till christmas its work slowly so you dont end up having to find make work……its why i usually save a lot of my pto for after summer

     

    bad time of year for the temps as most of them will be let go before christmas….seems to be surprising to management every year that most temps do not take them up on the offer of we’ll be happy to hire you again in 3 months time ish when we are drowning in work again

    soo once things get busy again we will be adding to the chaos by having a bunch of noobs to train as well

    its not the smartest way of going about things…but im sure it looks good on the numbersheets

     

    …..in unrelated news… i have works quarterly business meeting today….2 hours of stats and graphs that are of little importance to me and a bunch of office wonks talking about themselves and how good a job they did…….

    sooo…i took the day off and slept till noon instead…that seemed like a much better use of my time

  8. Hoo boy, yeah. I spent a lot of time in meetings today, and one of the smarter points was that we cannot afford to be overly optimistic of meeting our sprint goals for this quarter due to the holidays and people having to use or lose their paid time off. That set off a long, winding conversation about what was “reasonable”. How many definitions can there be?
