Hi, friends!
If you play hooky from work or school, what’s your great day?
Is it sleeping in and laying around all day? YES
Is it going shopping to somewhere that isn’t busy because it’s not a weekend? YES
Is it driving to a winery/brewery for day drinking? YES
Float trip? Pool day? YES
Tell me, what do you do?
Signed, I went to the zoo today instead of the office.
Lately, most of my days off (including last Thursday), are simply spent sleeping.
This last one–like most of the last few–i could feel the beginnings of a cold coming on, and I was just wiped from Tuesday night/Wednesday’s results… so I decided to stay home & sleep, to try and knock the darn cold down.
Slept much of Saturday, too, fighting sinus-y gunk, and by Sunday, it did get a lot better–today, too.
I learned a few years back, when I first started working with kids, that *if I just give up/give in & take a day to sleep early when I’m getting a cold, “the crud” will last a lot shorter than if I try & try to “just push through!”
So at this point, i let my body do it’s thing, and I just sleep my way through the worst of the cold.
Same here. Most shift rotations I spend most of Sat in bed sleeping the time change off and then I’ll do stuff on Sunday when my sleep starts to come back to “normal.”
1) November just sucks. Even more so as mom is palliative care.
2) I’m actually glad I did go to homecoming this year. I didn’t want to because well my life hasn’t changed. Still working the same grueling job for the same ungrateful sabotaging shitheads. The career I worked hard for is gone. Etc. But I did get to see my friends which is worth more to me than pretend flexing about a life I don’t have and saved me a trip for this year leading to 3).
3) I was planning a west coast trip visiting my university buddies for this time, but with mom in palliative that wasn’t going to happen/cancelled or if I were super selfish I would have gone but I’d be miserable with guilt thinking about her and dad.
4) Usually I take the day off to just get away from my shit especially now. I took several days during the summer, but now I’m paying for it as now I’m on my supervisors radar for taking too many days off. It’s not major, but it could lead to many bad things like before unlike then they know me just as I know them, I don’t have a director in my back pocket and they didn’t know my tactics.
When I hear about new (to me) restaurants or bubble tea places, I save them on Google Maps. Theoretically, when I have free time, I’ll treat myself to a meal or drink at one of those spots. Unfortunately, I only get free time in the mornings and none of those places are open.
Or they’re 25min away… Like this one that just popped up on my IG feed 😭

Way backwhen there were regular releases of good movies, I did that a couple of times. Nowadays it’s hard to see it.
Also I’m really not willing to spend theater ticket prices nowadays.
Same goes with me and the nighttime (55 minutes until my EoS and fucking COUNTING!).
I have nothing to play hooky from. I am truly blessed.
Don’t you have border collies? I find them exhausting. I need dogs that don’t want something to chase all the time.
There are 150 sheep here, deer, groundhogs, squirrels, and more. There is no shortage of stuff for the border collies to chase.
And since there are 6 to 9 of them at any given time, if all else fails, they will chase each other. I have long since learned not to throw a stick, because they will fetch it, bring it back, and then expect me to continue throwing it until the day I die.
I got stuck doing that once with a tennis ball and a couple of them, which is why I asked.
Hmmm
Looks at possible breeds to get when I go back to school…
crosses Border Collies off the list.
Add in “Any of the Herding Breeds,” if you want a “chill & relaxed” dog, Manchu!😉
BC’s, German Shepherds, Maligators, Dutch Shepherds, Shelties, Corgis,
All of ’em NEED a “job” or they’re gonna go stir-crazy, or be a hellion!😂
A Mal would is basically my dream “Retirement Dog,” if I ever retire, because that’s about the level of all-encompassing-wierdo I’d need to keep me focused & functional, with a totally open schedule😉😂🤣
The amount of input & daily training they *need* to be happy, functional dogs, is about the level of *demand* i need for *me* to be a functional human, if i have no outside demands like work!😉😆😁
Nah we always have had German Shepherds. They’re high energy until they’re about 3 and then they start chilling out.
Admittedly, you will have a Velcro dog that just wants to be always near you, but also the company is nice. Unless you expect to be able to take a shit by yourself ever again.
As a teen I had a German Shep/malamute mix. She looked like the GS (mom) but had her daddy’s brains (and undercoat). Just wanted to shed and awoo all day.
Sleep + coffee + gaming?
If by “play hooky” you mean “no call no show,” I’ve never done that in my life. I am too afraid of being in trouble. Even in high school when it was senior ditch day, my high school was adjacent three corn fields and a gravel quarry. Nowhere to go (also surrounded by DO NOT PICK UP HITCHHIKERS signs because of the state prison one town over). I don’t remember if too many people actually ditched.
As an adult, most of my days off from work are one offs. I don’t take “vacations.” I like to just take a day here or there to either run errands, get appointments out of the way, or vegetate. Then I can rot all weekend.
the downside to living within walking distance of my work….is that i have to stay indoors if i play hooky…asides from maybe a quick shopping trip for essentials…
theres no escaping getting spotted if you do anything fun
hr takes a dim view of things that are fun when you are sposed to be sickly
