Security researchers have revealed that signals from tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMSs), required in U.S. cars since 2007, can be used to track vehicles from 40-50 meters away using devices costing $100.

TPMSs send a unique sensor identifier that never changes during the lifetime of the tire.

Vehicle Tire Pressure Sensors Enable Silent Tracking
Like many other features and systems in modern cars, tire pressure sensors leak sensitive data that can be abused by threat actors.
[darkreading.com]

I should note that modern cars are already a huge stream of radio data including the hard-coded MAC addresses in your Bluetooth hands free head unit, 5G modems, etc which generally never change.

If you’re not already taking precautions on the other stuff, TPMS radio is the least of your worries.

I think @micahflee.com and @eff.org have published some good overviews on automotive privacy — it’s basically a pretty hopeless situation for all but the most dedicated and paranoid folks.

The thing about TPMS identifiers is they can enable tracking of older cars and trucks, even antiques.

Tire pressure monitoring systems are pretty useful, they save something like half a billion dollars a year in fossil fuel costs in the US, although researchers found that the actual reduction in annual vehicle fatalities ended up being far more modest than NHTSA’s predictions from the early 2000s.

This person is quote tweeting me calling me a “security expert” in scare quotes (and misgendering me lol)

Anyway, this is bad info. The TPMS sensor is an independent, battery-operated device built into the tire. It transmits any time the tire is moving, regardless of what car it’s in.

Why is “security expert” in scare quotes? 🤣 If I’m not a security expert then nobody is lol

I can get 4 stem transmitters for $20. Talks to my phone.

They offer them at every tire shop.

Niche product my ass.

…so…at this point…I’m not even really sure I’m even trying to be funny when I say the part that might be all I have left is a bone-deep desire not to give my father the satisfaction this or any other side of the grave that I deserve to be included by default in the “younger generation(s)” that “lack stamina”…I…still don’t feel like that is an accurate way to describe that…much less think I will ever be able to adequately get across to the guy how much I don’t think I know either more or better about than him but simultaneously know to be inter-related with things he won’t countenance being brought up in conjunction without pitching a fit like a child because what he actually misses is a sort of…banter might even be the technical term…that his whole nervous system was wired to for a whole-ass career he retired from but wouldn’t understand being told he could look at like the stuff you talk about “cold turkey” when you get into getting off…the way runners can get addicted to endorphins to a point that there are physiological/mental/behavioral symptoms that present if they can’t keep taking those

…&…nobody’s perfect but the man doesn’t deserve to be made to feel shit about himself anymore than he notices when there’s ways he might be being kinda shitty to people he wouldn’t want to be if he could help it…so…not like I don’t love the guy

…but…if he was presently king of the world…&…that world looked like this one?

…pretty sure I’d be ashamed enough to be spending so much time skulking about in the shadows I might even run into a ninja…&…even if it were my own family…that might look like redemption for whatever those clans charge

…I wanna get old & be grouchy & have that be funny to people younger than me

…I don’t wanna be the guy from kung fu wandering mad max’s fury road when I’m not bruce lee, either…that’s not my idea of a retirement package I’d sign up to work my ass off just to get to be around for

…shit…I don’t think I’m prepped enough to keep @farscythe in the good noodles…so if the shit really hits the fan I’m clearly as fucked as anyone

…but…all the same…mostly that’s because whatever level of aware I might be of all the shit that tends to provoke that sort of shit…I’m equally aware of how much smaller that masses out to in the balance of the grand scheme of things than the stuff that makes it look as bad as it does because of all the ways it doesn’t fucking have to…even now…for some values of logic even never for real ever…so I still don’t think I’m fooling myself believing there are enough people currently in existence capable of being good enough at existing for us all to have a reasonable expectation of getting to continue to do that for the foreseeable future…despite the implicit demands of the entirely foreseeable parts of the available futures determinedly being forced upon all of us

      • no worries mate…. im at noodlecon 3
if need be….ive probably got about a months worth…at least 2 meals a day
and..well i keep finding them on offer..so the stockpile is growing…

what can i say….shit keeps forever…and if the power goes theres still gas to boil water…. fantastic emergency food..lol

        • …ok…not sure how happy the people who think I’m their gone-FUBAR go-to disaster recovery plan will be to know that I’m resting easier knowing mine looks pretty solid

…might know somewhere we might be able to make ourselves useful if we could get there before the noodles run out

…maybe even someone who could make the noodles if we can maybe knock off a truckload of the powder sachets to see you through

…you know…if it all gets to being all the bets are off…& I remember to figure out how to find you without an internet

…which…I guess go dutch & ask people on bicycles if they know a big lad goes by kris & probably hasn’t quit if they’re still making cigarettes

…more than enough for a disaster movie sidekick backstory montage, anyway…I’ll be fine…it’ll be like you’re the witcher & I’m the annoying bastard with the lute that accidentally became a revolutionary just trying to stay within arms’ length of the option to maybe drink too much?

          • oh hey you are always welcome…and honestly…your tactic for finding me might more or less work…once you make it out of the randstad anyways…just head up north and ask about for a brodie…. up here in the farmlands…..everyone knows everyone somehow….and theres only 2 brodies up here…lol…. worst case scenario…you find my brother and his mother of all anime collections (no joke….its great library rivaling)

            • …I mean…that actually sounds like a plan, almost…when you put it like that

…be nice to see you under less calamitous circumstances…but…good to know that one about the truer words spoken in jest still works pretty good?

    • Talk about a sinking ship! She will be thrown under the bus soon once that new war smell fades & we need a new short term distraction.

    • Yeah, they’ve really tipped the scale from “we don’t believe there should be consequences” to “we don’t believe in consequences” and that’s a real uh-oh-call-the-doctors-with-butterfly-nets sort of difference.

  2. The Wired thing is exactly par for the course: They want media control, of course, but they honestly don’t understand that other people might not see things their way even if they control the narrative.

    • They don’t understand it because they truly believe that everybody is stupider than they are. They simply can’t internalize dissent, because no one would ever dare to defy them, because they are undisputed gods based on their bank accounts.

Trump is basically the all-time champ of this extreme narcissism. He will lie about anything and EXPECT us to take his “word” for it. On a much smaller scale, I see the same behavior in my mother-in-law. We realized that if she gets an answer she doesn’t like from, say, a doctor, she will simply lie to us about it, and EXPECT us to take her “word” for it. It never occurs to either of them than anyone would check what they say, because why would you? You were handed a tablet from the mountain by a messenger from God and you’re expected to do what it says.

Musk, Noem, Thiel, Altman, Patel, RFK, Miller, all of them — they simply lie and expect that it will be accepted as reality. And they are literally bewildered when it’s not.

      • I don’t even think it’s that they think we’re stupid. I do think they definitely don’t care and have such negative empathy that they’re incapable of realizing why other people might.

I certainly believe Trump is a narcissist — don’t really need a degree to see that one — but I think they all just take their cues from him which is somehow even worse than if they were all narcissists too.

        • I get what you’re saying, but I will point out that a lack of empathy is pretty much standard for narcissists. So I think they are way over-represented in this administration and definitely over-represented in the “elite” class. Yeah, it’s a term that’s way overused, but I think that’s because it’s being demonstrated on a grand scale right now.

          https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/understanding-narcissism/202411/do-narcissists-have-empathy

          • …I don’t necessarily think it’s worth arguing over for the sake of the semantics but I think maybe another way to look at it is that empathy is connected to a capacity for imagination in addition to a suite of cognitive firmware there doesn’t appear to be valid observations to support being supported by the minds of these people…& that the extent to which it becomes interwoven in loadbearing ways throughout the personality that serves as the operating system in which that mind is very proud of its software & all the stuff that does that’s all them & they think they could do if there was no such thing as a BIOS to boot it…is the same family of borked dependencies all the way down the stack until you hit root

…it’s a frankenstein’s monster of an analogy whether or not you could animate it as a metaphor with legs…but…when you kludge together the stumps of all the stuff you have to oversimplify beyond recognition to stitch it all together & call it a singular whole in defiance of any & all gods…if you actually read the book…that…might actually be like ET going home

…it can be the available happy ending & still make you feel sad?

          • Don’t get me wrong, I think you’re absolutely correct, just like a lot of CEO-types have to strip away parts of their humanity to reach those positions … but I suppose to make the bigger argument: is it narcissism if you’ve spent your life in a society built entirely for your comfort? At some point, you’re just responding to stimuli! Trump and a street corner vagrant might rant about the same things and have the same mental illness but one can actually use power and wealth to bend reality his way and the other one’s gonna end up in a jail cell.

Or shorter me: only regular people can be weird, rich people are merely “eccentric.”

            • …could you maybe squint a little & call it a combination failure of self (&/or other sorts) perception that functions like being missing gears in the transmission that you don’t notice because you drive an automatic but you call it a stick because they gave you a stalk & you don’t know what a clutch pedal is any more than a clutch plate

…in sci-fi trope terms all the shit that makes life worth living to them as perceives it is somehow “out of phase” for them…until they demand only the bits of reality they can perceive be the only reality available to anyone anywhere & also that they get to say what those bits are & that they work the ways that work for them…that’s a them-problem

…they see the people seeing all the stuff they don’t & they get pissy about that & they already went all-in that they need to be harder to change than reality or nothing makes sense the way everything being to their liking being the natural order of things makes sense to them & needs to keep making sense or the concept they’d already be mad at me for saying they have while calling them them…so they make their life’s work over into making themselves an everybody’s problem

…for want of a better way of putting it that might somehow be of use that one doesn’t seem to be?

  3. …if I go add this in where the screenshot of the next paragraph comes in…I don’t know as I manage to leave it at that…but…again…for those that couldn’t go find the context but might appreciate it more than the orphan excerpt that skips the part that might be the most insulting at least one member of the audience could think of anything they ever heard being

This morning, the defense secretary gave a briefing on the war that quickly degenerated into Trumplike bombast. (Wisely, the Pentagon scheduled this at 8 a.m. eastern time, when most of the country is either sleeping or busy starting their day.) Hegseth apparently prefers to sound more like a Call of Duty player leading a raid than a sober and judicious secretary of defense: “Death and destruction from the sky all day,” he said, along with other empty phrases such as “We’re playing for keeps.” (As opposed to what, exactly?)

Most reporters are now accustomed to Hegseth’s drama-laden antics. But even by the low standards he has set, he managed to shock many of them when he cynically used the deaths of U.S. military personnel to air his own grievances with the press.

On Sunday morning (local time), an Iranian drone hit a makeshift operations center in Kuwait. The Pentagon says that six Americans are dead. Not only is this event a tragedy, but it also requires an explanation: The drone reportedly snuck through U.S. defenses without setting off any alerts, and struck a target that now seems to have been unduly vulnerable to aerial attack.

The defense secretary, the man who is supposed to carry this news to the American public and mourn with them, instead whined about the unfairness of it all. “When a few drones get through or tragic things happen, it’s front-page news. I get it,” Hegseth told the reporters, military personnel, and civilians gathered this morning in the Pentagon. “The press only wants to make the president look bad, but try for once to report the reality. The terms of this war will be set by us at every step. As I said Monday, the mission is laser-focused.”

“Tragic things happen”? Hegseth said this as though it is unreasonable to look any closer at such events. He seems unable to grasp that the deaths of Americans are not merely a public-relations problem: When a drone slips through U.S. defenses and kills six members of America’s armed forces, the deaths of those servicepeople are the story. The people of the United States deserve to know what happened and why. Hegseth complaining that he’s not getting credit for all of the drones that didn’t get through is like an airline executive responding to an air disaster by growling about all of the planes his company made that didn’t crash.

…that’d be how the atlantic thing got to the part about the part the colleague overheard

…dunno if I find the time to fit the bottom of the post for sounds I might like to hear at least some…but probably I need to find something that works like noise-cancelling for the faint “swing-batter-batter-batter-batter…swing” chorusline coming from somewhere nearby?

    • There has never been anyone more dry drunk than Hegseth during that briefing. He was out of his mind. Completely looney tunes.

    • …mostly the people I’ve had ask me questions like “should I use a VPN”…even the ones that actually spent a good chunk of time doing exactly that to remote into work…tend to end for me in a confusing conversation until I figure out which part of why which bits are different across different devices in different locations doing different things & why you might or might not find that worth the extra time/headache/configuring/subscription…much less the different ways things can say that’s what they are while actually working in a spectrum of different ways…they misunderstood in between what they thought of as logging into to something on their work laptop when it was logging into their office server using the screen/keyboard of the laptop like it was in the same building…& the thing that they could turn on in their browser on their phone without that having protected anything else on their device from whatever lurked on the open public wifi or the hotel network you’re about to try to use to connect the laptop to the work you need to do remotely…so…I hesitate to say what’s worth it for who to be doing…but iirc the pitch in the legal eagle video about the election stuff is for one of the services that actively try to police stuff that’s online saying it’s about you that either isn’t or shouldn’t…& to some extent those along with the ones that monitor the breaches & notify you & let you do something to at least invalidate the sorts of data you *can* change that could be used in a process of escalatory ID theft or repurposing to some or other cottage industry grift…aren’t crazy to look at any more than a credit score…though…there might be other parallels, there…there are pros & cons & some people are better suited than others to find the pros useful & avoid the cons & others can get by fine without ever bothering to let it be a factor in their lives

…which way that ersatz arms race goes I guess remains to be seen…but our catch 22 is that what we popularly take to be more or less a basic civil right at this point…in that many public services are supplied in a way that’s almost impossible to navigate without internet access…requires at the same time extraordinarily complex bits of rarefied technology…while making those not have to do so many things the people using them don’t understand & in fact will throw their toys all the way out of the pram even if the pram is the window of a mercedes on the freeway if someone tries to make them understand…& flawlessly do what they expect them to do even as they have no idea which bits of the swiss army knife they tried to use for a tool to do what

…so they have to be as simple as possible…at which point the stuff you have to let them decide to do on your behalf if you don’t want to figure out what the question that’s asking is becomes the path of least resistance through arguably the majority of set-up routines followed by anyone who just bought a new bit of consumer electronics…probably even if it wouldn’t have fallen in the sub-set of those that invoked telecommunications more complicated than a line of sight infra-red signal when you were the age of the kid selling it to you who somehow still knows less about it than you because familiarity with the products you’re employed to sell long ago apparently went the way of the rest of the dinosaurs I somehow have yet to join

…on days that only do my head in the sort of amount the first few tens of years of living in that inadvertently mis-aligned as plausible boundaries to what might turn out to be my window of operationally functional parameters…I honestly think one day either someone gets so rich elon never even dreamed the like…or…in the version I like better…someone berners-lee-s the shit out it & being able to do the things people need to with tech gets sythesized into a coherent & navigable common interface that can be effectively firewalled entirely from a…possibly by then quantum-ly-entangled online presence in which one can do the fun &/or work stuff the internet could do…on devices that if you knew how to use one of them would let you log into any of them & have it be like it was your-device-in-that-form-factor & all your stuff worked the same give or take form-specific optimizations that the device would already have adjusted to your expectations before it finished booting

…it’s not remotely the way any of how we do any of that has ever particularly looked to me to be headed…but…given how much less variation there is in the most widely owned & overused kinds of devices than there used to be…& we’re decades beyond it being possible to boot what (functionally – give or take being able to make the GUI not look different enough to make them bitch about that part) would be a whole desktop environment live-booted into the RAM buffer of a machine that hasn’t decided in advance not to let you…& the size of the thing you could potentially put that in on physical media is smaller than the size of some of the 2FA token-generators that not only do some people have for work but at least some gamers use to log-in to MMPOG-style cloud gaming platforms…so…in principle…with something the size of a small key-fob to handle a hardware-key type 2FA handshake & a ‘net-booted image temporarily overlaying the ROM for a single sign in session for that user so they’re only borrowing your phone hardware & you’re pretty sure they’ll give that back the same state you gave it to them in…or it doesn’t matter which of the free ones at the library they sat down at…or some other way of handling the “secure” parts that might be harder to nick &/or biometrics for the hole card in your 2FA pair or whatever people determine clears the not-too-annoying-to-use-as-desired bar…not inconceivable that’s a way you could have that work already if the geek of it got good to you…so far it seems like by the time you know enough about any of it you apparently have other things to think about that make it seem like nothing remotely like that ever occurred to you even once

…maybe that’s like the way david hume reminded himself that the sun more than likely would rise again on the morrow…despite another day spent on a book arguing that just because it always had before that wasn’t really sufficient grounds to say you knew it would again the way it might be important to say you could or couldn’t know what sort of things

…or maybe that happens wherever it is I’d have to stick it for the sun not to shine

…probably dealers choice for a dealer I won’t live to meet & probably ought not to pre-suppose will or won’t deserve the status of a pusherman whether or not that future is superfly or they could or couldn’t be a white guy

…but…the alternative increasingly seems like if the old grudges getting acted on by the oldest assholes don’t get us the “just finding their youthful boundaries as they figure out who they are” ones fucking will like the monster coming back for the extra jump scare before the credits roll for real?

  4. I just heard Kristi Noem just fired & replaced w/ MarkWayne Mullin but haven’t found official story yet!

    • …because of course the day iraq goes dark because of shit you set off in iran you pick the guy that called hegseth president multiple times & mixed iran & iraq up while his mouth was making noises coming out of his face in front of a camera wired for sound on cable broadcast…was that yesterday…or a world war ago…so hard to keep track

…that’s what sending your best looks like…to…the people that did that…one…assumes…some-fucking-how?

    • Mullin’s confirmation hearing needs to look EXACTLY like what happened to Noem over the last couple of days. If Congress can’t manage to pull that off again, they should all be fired.

  5. …here’s…something that “went to print”, anyway

BREAKING NEWS 🚨🗞️: Kristi Noem out as Homeland Security secretary. Her ouster comes after two contentious days of her testimony before Congress. Trump says Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin will take her place.

…the hearings may still be funny in places but the places any of this seems funny are dwindling by the hour like it’s a big ol’ sandy plot device with a desert running through it & the macguffin will rend the world if the other macguffin doesn’t meta-macguffin it before all the stuff that was in the top part is all the way in just the other part…& maybe I’m still shook from being asked that question about if now was world war III &/or IV the way you might ask if that car is honda or a ford…like…it could be one or the other or maybe neither but it being a car is not in doubt?

…but I am sincerely struggling today with finding any way to look at what I’m seeing & not see that looking like it shows up under the heading of what used to be all the boxes you needed to check to call a thing a world war the way the internment facilities check all the boxes you needed to for a thing we called a concentration camp…except for the part where it hasn’t already been going on for as long as those two did the way they presented that in class…unless you accidentally look at it differently & it either looks like it never ended or it can’t be a thing that can have an end & trying to understand it like it has to be keeps making us think we can tell ourselves it can’t happen so anything that does can’t have been it…or…you try to wrap your head around how anything &/or everything would have to look to start with what this looks like & work your way back to what would need to be the first principles necessary to underwrite some hypothetical prime mover that pushed the dominoes while thinking that was a clever thing they did…either of which seems to go places I hope you have to be fucking nuts to think make sense because them not making any to me is among my remaining vestigial bits of circumstantial evidence there’s still a slim possibility I’m not quite as out of my tiny little mind crazy as the big wide world wants me to think it couldn’t care less about being even if it tried to multiply it by how much it couldn’t care less what or even if I think or am in a position to consider myself an I
