What I Watched: Only Murders in the Building, Season Five. I liked it, The Guardian did not.
Here is their review: Now, with season five, the centre is failing to hold. We ended the previous season in the traditional manner, with our heroes finding another murder in the building (or at least its grounds): this time of Lester the doorman (Teddy Coluca). Then we have another. Then the clues (including a missing finger, a mafia connection and an elevator crank) and suspects (including Téa Leoni as an Italian widow and potential love interest for Charles, who is taking testosterone supplements for his health; three billionaires; and Lester’s wife, Lorraine – Dianne Wiest, her brilliance eternal) begin to arrive. But they feel randomly scattered rather than meaningfully laid. The podcast element falls by the wayside, the proportion of red herrings to genuine progress is off, the action is too often located outside the Arconia, and the core team are too often split up – not least by the return of Streep as Oliver’s now-wife, Loretta. I know that I am probably in a minority in feeling that: a) a little of Streep goes a long way; and b) she should, wherever possible, be kept away from comedy.
Too many moments feel laboured where once they would have been nimble and fleet. Howard’s (Michael Cyril Creighton) relationship with the new robot-doorman is absurd in the wrong way, Renée Zellweger as one of the billionaires is just a collection of mannerisms (though Christoph Waltz as another is just what classic OMITB would have ordered and a joy to watch). And Oliver’s snort, which had fallen into welcome abeyance when it became clear that the show was working brilliantly without such gimmicks, is back.
It is still charming, still fun. It still has enough flashes of the old dynamic to keep us hooked and hopeful. Martin, Short and Gomez have not lost sight of their characters, and a course correction could easily be made for season six. To end it here would be a disservice to all.
What I Read: Yasmine Galenorn’s thirteen book Moonshadow Bay series.
Here’s the blurb for book one, Starlight Web: From Book 1: Moonshadow Bay…where magic lurks in the moonlight, and danger hides in the shadows. One month before January Jaxson turns 41, her husband ditches her for a trophy wife. Adding insult to injury, he steals the business she helped build, and kicks her out during the holidays. So when her best friend Ari suggests she move back to Moonshadow Bay—a quirky, magical town near Bellingham WA—January decides to take the plunge.
Born into a family of witches, January accepts a job at Conjure Ink, a paranormal investigations website. The job’s right up her alley but she doubts that everything reported to Conjure Ink really exists. That is, until she’s sent out on her first case. An abandoned asylum once housed a murderer, who killed an entire family one Yuletide Eve. It’s rumored that every December he returns to haunt the woodland around the asylum, seeking to add new members to his supernatural family.
January’s sure it’s an urban legend, but when new victims show up with no logical explanation for their deaths, Conjure Ink sends her in to investigate. Now, January must not only navigate the new life she’s trying to build, but the paranormal beasties she’s sent out to explore, as well as a hot new neighbor, who seems to be hiding a shadowed past of his own.
What I Listened To: Acopia – Real Life; Sharp Pins – (I Wanna) Be Your Girl; and The Growlers – Feel My Funk:
Thank you for playing Brain Drain! How are you, dearest ones? Darling DeadSplinterites, what’s going on? Please do share with us!
I learned more about Tay tay than I wanted to know.
I ended up re-watching “The Natural” (partially because of the death of Redford and partially because of the Jays.)
…in a similar vein I finally managed to watch “the old man and the gun”…which may be a sort of fitting last film for redford…based on a true story…kind of charming…like the serial bank robbing guy his character is?
We’re watching yet another British crime drama called The Crow Girl. It’s got a good cast of British crime drama mainstays, and has Eve Myles and Dougray Scott, who I like in everything. We’re waiting for Slow Horses, Task, (and others) to get all the episodes in so we can binge watch them. My wife refuses to watch shows if she has to wait a week for the next episode.
Watching Titus lose his shit…
im liking that the growlers tune (tho with that name i was at least half expecting some questionable brit punk)
ummm..that is all…nothing much to add…currently on a bit of a ravey bender…you know…getting used to the vibe to go with the ridonculous amount of led bits currently en route to me
All I read this week was other people’s resumes. I gotta say, the recruiting firms are not doing their due diligence like they used to on making resumes look more appealing.
I saw Tron Ares because I forgot that Jared fuckin Leto was starring in it. It was what one would expect from the franchise. Which is my way of saying that I enjoyed it. Nine Inch Nails did the soundtrack which was cool.
…it remains a great mystery of our times…if you try it’s not hard to name bad movies with jared leto…if you try a bit harder you can remember good movies that had jared leto in…but…off the top of my head…can’t seem to name a movie jared leto was good in?
I am in the middle of watching Conclave. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conclave_(film)
The Pope has died and the College of Cardinals has convened to choose a new one. At first I thought the protagonist Cardinal Lawrence was our own beloved Professor T, but no, it is Ralph Fiennes! The other two main antagonists are John Lithgow (Cardinal Something-Tremblay, so presumably he’s meant to be French Canadian, since half of Québec is named Tremblay) and Stanley Tucci, who was born to play an Italian Cardinal. There is a [SPOILER ALERT] black Cardinal in contention but like in many movies, especially sci-fi and thrillers, he gets knocked out. This Conclave is not a total sausagefest, oh God forgive me for describing a large gathering of Cardinals as a sausagefest, because they make way for Isabella Rossellini, she of sinful birth out of wedlock, as Sister Agnes.
Fabulous. My French sojourn in July will be making a stop in Avignon, famous for hosting a Pope during the Great Schism. Its most remarkable building is the Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes) and our shore excursion will take us there. I think I’m going to convert on the spot.
…if you hadn’t read the book or encountered spoilers & you don’t come back to tell us your thoughts at the end I for one will be…most put out…in…like…the full Downton sense?
