Saturday Morning Brain Drain [12/9/20]

What I watched: Uncle Roger cooking critique videos. Am I late to this party? Do you already know about Uncle Roger? I do not often laugh out loud, but his utter horror at bad cooking made me giggle. There are a series of these, and of course he has his own YouTube channel.

Should you watch it? Yes, you should, chased down with a nice cold Tsingtao Beer. As Uncle Roger would say, don’t make me move my leg!

What I read: J. D. Robb’s 51st Eve Dallas Novel, Shadows in Death. And yes, by book 51 there is a formula, and I swear some of the descriptions and dialogue are cut and pasted from previous books, but I really like this series and its characters. I’ve been reading this series since before eBooks, and fondly remember trading paperbacks with an older lady at a previous job. At her funeral, her son came up to me and said, “You’re the book lady! Mom sent them to me when she’d finished them, and she loved talking with you about them.” So there is a strong dose of nostalgia for me, especially since the first book was published in 1999.

Should you read this? I think so – the Eve Dallas books are fun and romantic and futuristic and always have a good mystery/police procedural angle. But if you are new to the series, do start with book one – you will have years of regular reading to catch up on!

What I listened to this week: Well, the excellent taste of the DUAN folks is killing any hope of brevity within my playlists; I am now up to 109 hours on my most recent one. Apologies if you recommended one of these bands and I didn’t give you credit here – please feel free to take it in the comments.

Rose City Band, Wide Roll:

Akerfeldt, Tropical vibes:

A Myo recommendation (from a DUAN?) Astronautalis, The River, The Woods:

So, darling DeadSplintertarians, please let us know what is going on – everything alright? Are you staying safe? How was your week? What did you watch, read, listen to, or do? What’s up with you?!

    • also in the last song the reason the black dude has some slightly over the top reactions is coz its his song shes singing
she johny cashed him like reznor and did his girlfriend better than he could (hahahahhahhaahaha that came out so wrong)

        • lol tbh i call everything dutch local
i mean shit…i think the longest i could drive to be in a different country is about 3 hours….and thats going damn near the full lenght of the country to get into belgium

  2. Watched:  The Chiefs/Texans game with Mrs. Butcher.  It was probably the first thing we’ve seen on TV since March that felt at least a little normal.  I’ll hand it to the stadium officials for the way they handled the setup and the crowd disbursement and the mask mandates.  But, it’s still 17,000 people so if there’s a new hot spot in KC as a result I won’t be surprised.

Read:  My Family’s Slave by Alex Tizon.  Absolutely incredible read.  I won’t even give any synopsis here because you have to read it for yourself.

Listened:  All this time listening to RL Burnside and I never knew he had a son, Cedric, who is also a musician–drums are his instrument.  It’s pretty clear that dear old dad was a solid influence, but that doesn’t diminish his talent at all.  Here’s his tribute to his father:

    • Your listened to, what a lovely tribute to his father.

Regarding sprots, we watched some of that game as well. I like football as background noise, for some reason. My takeaways were that the Kansas City QB is such a poised young man; I feel terrible that in 30  years all their brains will be mush; and the booing during the silent moment must have been hurtful to the players.

Happy weekend to you and Mrs. Butcher!

      • Mrs. Butcher was actually the one who got me into watching football.  I never cared about it as a kid so never watched it when I got older.  She loves watching football so when we were dating she got me into it.  Mahomes is probably her favorite player in he game right now and that guy really has his shit together for someone so young, but I guess having grown up around professional sports the culture shock wasn’t so bad for him.

At first I didn’t understand why they were booing, until after when the network showed the statements that were put up on the jumbotron.  Then, sadly, it made perfect sense.

    • I read the article in The Atlantic by Alex Tizon. Just when I think I can’t be surprised by the cruelty some people are willing to visit on others something like this comes along. It’s a painful read.

  3. Watching Cobra Kai thanks to recommendation from @Loveshaq and @Jonee It is so cheesy, jumps the shark every episode, and I’m loving it!
Reading Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube, memoir by Blair Braverman, professional musher and columnist for Outside magazine. Our life experiences couldn’t be more different but I relate to a lot of her struggles.
Listening to Toots and the Maytals. RIP Toots.

  4. I can’t remember who it was (Jonee, I believe?) that recommended this to me a while ago when I was promising to watch western movies (little did I know at the time that most people were recommending western TV shows) but I watched Winchester ’73. It was ‘aight…I liked some parts and I’d watch it again.

When I can get around to it, I think I might watch the original 3:10 to Yuma.

    • Glad you enjoyed Winchester ’73 @myopicprophet It probably was me that recommended it. It’s one of my favorite movies. The original 3:10 to Yuma is another good one, as is High Noon. If you really get going with westerns, try Man of the West directed by the same guy who did Winchester ’73. It’s an intense one and is a bit different since a good chunk of it takes place indoors.

      • …out of curiosity…how do you rate Nevada Smith with Steve McQueen?

…I ran across it again the other day having not seen it in years & aside from his being considerably older than I’m pretty sure his character is meant to be I still thought he was pretty good in it

  5. Season two of The Boys is dropping on Amazon Prime. They are releasing one episode every Friday. I was 4 behind so I’m catching up on those. I thought the first season was more ‘fun’, but this one is pretty good.

    • …if I remember the comics more or less correctly the somewhat gleeful insanity of The Boys gets pretty dark…I mean obviously there’s lots from the start that is pretty dark but while the premise is still sort of novel it sort of takes the edge off but I’m kind of curious to see how they go about it as a show

…I don’t know if anybody bothered with the Kick Ass movies (or Super or Defensor) but those all kind of played off the tropes of superheroes by keeping the idea but removing the powers where The Boys goes full tilt on the powers but goes after a lot of the same aspects of the thing at the same time & it seems like there’s a chance they might end up doing a better job of some of it in the show than on the page…but there are some things about itthat I don’t think really translate too well from the one to the other so I guess I don’t know which way I’d bet it’ll come out in the end?

  6. I’m reading the Murderbot series. Martha Wells is a good writer, and she is extremely smart. The issues she raises with the parallels between bots in the sci fi world and marginalized people in our real world are really well done.

  7. …I was sort of busy yesterday & never quite got to this but farscythe left a clip on the DOT that reminded me of a show I can’t remember if I mentioned already…it’s called Lillyhammer

…a mob guy (Steven Van Zandt) with fond memories of a winter olympics in a city he can’t spell the name of picks it for his witness protection relocation…sort of a bit like My Blue Heaven (or The Family with Michelle Pfeiffer & De Miro) but set in Scandinavia?
