What I watched: Stargate Continuum. This was the very last thing made with the SG-1 cast and even had Richard Dean Anderson in it. This was better than the other direct-to-video film. Covers a fairly elaborate—but not insane—time travel plot. It held my interest and the writing was better. Would I watch it again? Probably.
What I read: Ringworld, by Larry Niven. Normally, I read books by Niven with his late writing partner, Jerry Pournelle. Niven eventually wrote a series of four Ringworld books, so I decided to give them a shot. Turns out that Niven is clearly the hard sci-fi influence and Pournelle is the storyteller. This first book was hard to follow and loaded with jargon that made my eyes glaze over. The plot itself was quite interesting, so I had to focus on that. It got much better near the end.

The Great British Baking Show is back.
Unfortunately, they decided to stick with the stupid skit at the beginning. More baking, less self indulgent British humor, please.
The contestants seem fine, but nobody is standing out as particularly interesting. Their tastes tend to be way too complicated, with 100 flavors thrown in, and I wish the judges dinged them more for it and focused more on the technical skill of their baking.
The final sculptural cakes had a lot of great looking cakes, though.
I get the desire to whip out the most elegant and complex thing you can to impress the judges and the cameras. But it takes real skill to make something simple and blow people away with it. Kind of like the difference between a 200 piece orchestra and a piano sonata.
Agreed – I’d rather have a sublime slice of cake than something where I’m trying to parse out what the actual flavors and colors are. Smart swaps are better than trying to overcomplicate things. For example, there’s a wonderful french bakery I go to sometimes (in the suburb Creve Coeur, in keeping with being tres francais) and my favorite thing on the menu is their Black Forest cake, but they swap out cherries for strawberries. That cake is perfection.
The same thing is true in things like woodworking and ceramics, where simpler things expose who really has the skill or not.
This is kind of neither here nor there, but I recently saw an establishment described as a “cakery.” Oh no.

was actually pretty good for another terminator story…tho..i think theres only so much fuckering with time lines you can do before you’ve just seent the story before
also…if you are going to be that gratuitous about taking people apart…it becomes really quite jarring that characters are naked barbie and kell dolls when they wear no clothes….

The anime/manga ultra violence always got me as well.
I also find it odd that Japan is also the home of pixelated genitals in porn yet they never have as many of the hangups as the prudes of Western nations.
oh i dont mind the ultra violence….its just makes the nipples are scary point more jarring

I enjoyed Dancing with the Stars again this week, and decided to give that new cruise ship soap opera medical drama Dr Odyssey a try. It’s fine, I enjoyed it enough to watch the next few episodes.
I realize that Fringe (fantastic show!) came out almost two decades ago…but do you find that Joshua Jackson seems to have aged by three decades? Might be the having kids and getting divorced thing.
I don’t recall watching him in anything since teenage me tried to fit in and watched Dawson’s Creek, so I don’t really have a frame of reference for oh fuck he really aged in the last few years…
I do think Lupita Nyong’o is too effortlessly cool to be dating him now.

I do want to add that I’ve been on like 8 or 9 cruises, and on 1 of those there was a medical emergency and on another 1 there was a medical emergency that ended in a person’s death. So I’m expecting a “very sad episode” at some point with a passenger death. The cruises I took were the big Carnival and Norwegian ones with 3000-4000 guests (including a lot of old people) and this series is more fancy fancy rich people smaller cruise boat, but still, the stats are what they are and at some point a really bad medical emergency will happen to someone on a cruise.
I’m impatiently waiting for my copy of Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom to arrive. Damn you GameStop, 1-3 business days my ass!
Trying to distract myself with Dallergut Dream Department Store by Lee Mi-ye. It’s a cozy novel with a cozy premise of designing dreams and selling them to people who visit the department store while they sleep. Either I’m missing something in translation (culturally) or it is just way too cozy for me. It borders on boring.

I first saw/heard these guys during the Fall of 1989 when they played a show during HomeComing (only time I ever saw them live.)
Soon after they took off…
Very uniquely Canadian band, totally Kingston and a part of my early adulthood soundtrack. People at work wondered who the hell they were when their last concert played live on the CBC, but it’s one of those you had to be there (not the typical Hip fan demographic (not white Gen X), but neither am I.) Their rise was conincidal to my time at Queen’s.
Their 2nd or 1st big hit song “New Orleans Is Sinking” was the theme of my first year academics. This song would be later banned in 2005 for a few months because “reasons” (Katerina.)
