Saturday Morning Brain Drain [3/2/24]

What I Watched: Crime Season Two with the talented Dougray Scott. The show has creepy crimes, horrific back stories, and few people redeem themselves. Although the reviews lightly trash the other actors, I think Crime is UK television at its best!

Here is the blurb from Rotten Tomatoes: On paper, it’s a standard police procedural of the kind you find everywhere. But what lifts it above the ordinary is an incendiary performance from Dougray Scott.

And here is the blurb from Decider: Our Call: STREAM IT. Again, it’s really hard to get excited about anything in Irvine Welsh’s Crime outside of Dougray Scott’s performance. But once again his performance draws viewers into the story.

Season 2 Trailer

What I Read: Kudos to @hammerzeitgeist for suggesting Fourth Wing (The Empyrean Book 1) by Rebecca Yarros. I liked this book more than anything I have read in recent memory. I also have Iron Flame (The Empyrean Book 2), but am holding off on starting it, because I am treating it like the last piece of chocolate, saving it to savor it.

Here’s the blurb, prefaced by the trigger warnings:

Triggers – Fourth Wing is a nonstop-thrilling adventure fantasy set in the brutal and competitive world of a military college for dragon riders, which includes elements regarding war, battle, hand-to-hand combat, perilous situations, blood, intense violence, brutal injuries, death, poisoning, graphic language, and sexual activities that are shown on the page. Readers who may be sensitive to these elements, please take note, and prepare to enter Basgiath War College…

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away…because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them. With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant. She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom’s protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret. Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

What I Listened To: I’m really enjoying Royal Otis. Here are three; Velvet; Sofa King (live); and I Wanna Dance With You.

Thank you for playing Brain Drain! How are you, dearest ones? Darling DeadSplinterites, what’s going on? Please do share with us!

  1. …so…random one…but there’s a thing on prime I wouldn’t have watched had the trailer not autoplayed with the sound on

…called bottoms…sort of a high school transposed fight club parody…but…not really

…felt like it ran an old, familiar playbook with at least some fresh material & I found it more funny than anything else?

  2. I watched: Gen V season 1

If you liked the Boys you will love this.  I can’t believe the Rethug thought police are not freaking out over this, it even has trans interracial sex & lots of Trumpish references.

Reading: about how our closest big city has a bunch of freaky sex!

    Listening: Some good drinking ska!

Now back to trying to get enough of the floor in to put the washer & dryer back in before the wife comes home.  If that fails, all hope is lost!

  3. I tried watching the new season of True Detective but I’m not good with horror. If it were more PG13 than R, I think I could handle it. It definitely reminds me of why I used to love the Xfiles.

      • …the mcconaughey/harrelson first season was pretty amazing…the one with the guy from dodgeball had potential but didn’t quiet clear the bar the first one set…personally I thought the 3rd was great

…haven’t caught up with the #4 yet

        • Co-sign this. Season one was great, two was okay, and three was amazing. Mahershala Ali was robbed for the Emmy. His performance is astounding.

I’m a couple episodes in to four — it is super creepy and has far more supernatural elements than the other seasons. Season three has no supernatural overtones at all — it’s pretty much straight police procedural, told over decades. The actors all portray themselves at intervals from thirties or so to seventies. And it works.

  4. I watched The Kitchen (Netflix). It was well done. Bleak as fuck. I enjoyed it. It felt very honest.

I started watching the Clone High reboot which is set 20 years after the first one ended. It’s a weird mix of woke self aware philosophy, teen sex and gory immature slapstick violence. I’m not sure it’s worth the time. I got a good laugh out of it because I totally forgot that my robot voice, which I use often with my kids, is 100% plagiarized from the robot on this show 🤖 IYKYK 😂

  5. What I watched: Yet another episode of “Hawaii 5-0.” But I don’t remember a minute of it. What happened was, the white wine was flowing liberally, and we’re still observing meatless Fridays, so I battered and baked some kind of white fish and heated up some store-bought frozen French fries. Fish-and-chips. Accompanied by a spicy sriracha ketchup. Then for dessert we had some store-bought brownies so I popped those in the oven and hand-whipped some cream. And we had bananas to use up, so I added those to the brownies and whipped cream.

I had no time to really concentrate on my boyfriend, Danny “Danno” Williams. The life of a semi-disabled faux-1950s housewife is not an easy one. At least I’m not raising Wally and the Beav.

      • Life is too short to go through it consuming high-sodium fast food, like most Americans do. Five years ago I would have made the brownies myself. About five years ago I offered to take my niece and her boyfriend out to dinner. They wanted to go to the local Chik-Fil-A. “No. We’ll go to a real restaurant. I can’t really go to a Chik-Fil-A. Not in good conscience. Find the best restaurant in this town. Ask about the dress code, if there is one.”

  6. I found something in the long forgotten bin, Prime has The Avengers (with Steed and Peel.)

Quite silly compared to today’s shows, but more word play and 60s English sensibility.

Hard to take seriously at all.

    • …that is both oddly genius…& something I swear I couldn’t find in a million years on purpose

…as usual I am in awe of your ability to get youtube to serve up these hidden gems

      • gotta say….the word play reminded me of you mate

is splinterrip put to song imo

but finding these things is for the most part just putting in the time…..you know….i find a lot of shit i dont care for…for every gem
