Saturday morning Brain Drain [4/4/26]

What I read:

The Jasad Heir by Sarah Hashem. I enjoyed it enough to buy the second book instead of wait 5 weeks for a copy from the library. From Goodreads: In this Egyptian-inspired debut fantasy, a fugitive queen strikes a deadly bargain with her greatest enemy and finds herself embroiled in a complex game that could resurrect her scorched kingdom or leave it in ashes forever.

What I watched:

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. It was hilarious! If you enjoyed the first one, you’ll like this one even more. (CW: There were two scenes where a man physically assaults two women that I wish they had not included. The violence was brutal, motivated by gendered hatred, and perpetrated by a very buff man against much smaller slight women. It didn’t fit the tone of the film which is saying a lot since the whole series is about hunting and killing a young woman.)

I’ve been traveling a lot this past month. Currently in Toronto visiting family, so I’m keeping this short. What have you been reading, watching, listening to?

  1. I watched the E! Dirty Rotten Scandals series this week, the episodes on Bob Barker were so gross.
It made me very glad I never watched “The Price is Right” because it’s really easy to not have conflicted feelings when a douchebag is associated with a show if you never liked the show.
See also: I always thought Harry Potter was meh so when it came out how horrible JK Rowling is, it wasn’t any skin off my ass to be like shrug, I’m going to keep on not supporting her work. Meanwhile, I have friends who loved those books so much it influenced their wedding design and I feel like they probably had a larger struggle with it.

  2. …read a couple more of the jack macevoy/rachel walling books by michael connnolly…as in lincoln lawyer/harry bosch stuff…they were all right but maybe not as good as some of his better stuff?

…haven’t watched as much as I figured I would but in terms of reality-avoidance the second season of the animated “windbreaker” ones that are sort of fun in a battle of the school gangs manga-esque sort of a diverting way that’s undemanding on the brain?

  3. I honestly hope my 2nd career (hopefully) isn’t as exciting or turbulent as the Rookie. The first season I really enjoyed. The last three have been increasingly fantastic as he’s gotten involved with cartels and FSB safe houses… It started out better than most cop procedurals because it was mundane. Now it’s more fantastic than SWAT (one of my sisters loved the show and I used to make fun of it because it was so over the top and that the main character whose acting emotional depth is almost as deep as mine (almost monotone) and who I kept mocking “Hondo, mad.” “Hondo, sad.”.)

I’m not watching as much frequently (spring finals you know.)

B5 is one Amazon Prime, but all the seasons are missing like 2/3 of the episodes. Like seriously WTF? It’s like how they got the Avengers (John Steed and gang not Iron Man etc) and only showed the BW Emma Peel Episodes and the Linda Thorsen ones… Really? WTF?

  4. I taught a tai chi class this morning and just finished mowing 50 acres. I’ll be checking on the pregnant ewes later. It’s been a busy morning so my brain is on >10% power. I think tonight I’ll watch something easy like HBO’s Rooster so I don’t have to tax it so hard. Then I’ll put my brain on slow-charge and get a full night’s sleep for a change.

  5. nothing to add..as i havent really watched or read anything other than the current shitshow…. but i did make an interesting scientific discovery today whilst i was out and about soaking up rays and ignoring my news feed

apparently potted plants are almost as effective as really cute dogs
turns out… no matter how grumpy you look…if you are walking around town with a potted hot pink orchid…you become safe and approachable and non threatening to kids and the elderly and pretty much everyone really…

holy shit…. havent had that many people wanting a little chin wag since i had a really cute dog….lol

now wondering if the effect holds true for all potted plants…..or if its specifically a hot pink orchid thing
