Saturday Morning Brain Drain [9/12/23]

What I Watched: Bosch: Legacy Season 2. Rolling Stone says that “Bosch: Legacy’ is still rock solid dad TV. I’m not sure what that means? Zaddy? This season had every major character set-up, harmed, and/or otherwise put into sneaky peril.

The Chicago Tribune says: “Harry’s story is more interesting — and closer to the noir sensibility hinted in the original — as a private investigator teaming up with the wily and poised defense attorney Honey Chandler, played by Mimi Rogers”.

It is also the story of his now-adult daughter, Maddy. Maddy is a high-achieving LAPD rookie, dealing with her father’s long shadow.

It’s worth watching.

What I Read: Summer’s Blood by Sara Bond, the first installment of her new Iron and Earth series. It was good! There are just enough differences, including the non-fairy fae focus, to catch my attention. Here is the blurb:

Hunting is illegal at the Greenwood Knoll Pub. Apparently, someone didn’t get the message.

For weeks, solitary fae of Atlanta have been disappearing with no word, no sign of foul play, and no explanations. When a half-human fairy bartender, discovers a body of a djinn in the Chattahoochee, she realizes something or someone is killing fae, and they’re using her bar as the hunting ground. Siobhan wants to keep her patrons safe, but her only real magical ability is tasting the unique flavor profile of other fairies’ magic, not much help when tracking down a killer. But as more fae are killed, SIobhan is willing to do whatever it takes to keep the Greenwood Knoll a sanctuary for all who need it.

When a foreign Fairy Queen arrives, demanding answers about one of her missing subjects, Siobhan finds herself at the center of a growing storm of suspicion. There’s something bigger at play in Atlanta, and with or without magic, Siobhan needs answers. Now. To find them, she’ll have to navigate the politics of a hostile Fairy Court and figure out why every clue seems to lead back to the Greenwood Knoll, before she or her found family fall victim to either the killer or a Fairy Queen’s idea of justice.

What I Listened To: Lucas Hamming – I Think You Need to Do This; Lo Moon – Evidence; and Meatraffle – Lovesong Industrial Complex.

Thank you for playing Brain Drain! How are you, dearest ones? Darling DeadSplinterites, what’s going on? Please do share with us!

  1. Watched:  Black Adam.  I was sick and hiding out in my hotel room during my work trip so I needed something to watch.  It was actually pretty entertaining.  I’m not sure why all the bad reviews piled on when it came out.  Sure, it’s not a great movie, but it was watchable and fun.

    Listened:  Shonna Tucker

  2. To whoever recommended Renfield, that was stupid. Also funny. It did just enough plot and character development to keep everything moving without worrying about stepping on its own toes. Good dumb fun.

  3. …caught a not-so-new thing with letitia wright called surrounded…the appearance of michael k williams tipped me to it not being new but it wasn’t bad

…the bass reeves series from paramount isn’t bad either in the vein of westerns…& for the hat-trick cry macho with clint eastwood is actually pretty good if you like that sort of thing

…also…read a trilogy by the lady that wrote the temeraire series (naomi novik) about a place called the scholomance…& although I did kind of see where a lot of it was going pretty early on (like first half of the first book for a good bit) the getting there is enjoyable, most of the principle characters are likable enough & the protagonist is in the running for becoming one of my favorites…she’s a born evil-super-sorcerer who doesn’t wanna murder & subjugate everyone even though that would be way easier & they definitely annoy her copiously enough to consider it

    • Oh Oh Oh! I read that trilogy as well, from the first book in 2020 to the last in 2022. It was very entertaining. Quoting you, “she’s a born evil-super-sorcerer who doesn’t wanna murder & subjugate everyone even though that would be way easier & they definitely annoy her copiously enough to consider it” that is a conundrum where it would be possible to go either way.

  4. Also I saw Killers of the Flower Moon. I enjoyed it, although I can definitely see the point of view that it needed more grounding in the Osage point of view. Although I think Scorcese should also get credit for doing as much as he did, if that makes sense.

I think one of the interesting points is that the bad guys weren’t especially smart or competent, just operating in a system that didn’t care, and when the pressure finally came, they cracked.

    • …I…don’t think I’m all that likely to watch that one?

…I know the story…I’m familiar with the book…& it’s several hours of a tale of misery & awfulness that might be scorsese-d up to its most cinematically palatable…but has all the appeal of oppenheimer to me

…be interesting to see what if any movement of the needle it might provoke about the underlying injustice involved, though

…I gather that lady who calls herself the pioneer woman comes direct from one of the families who made their fortune that way, for example…which seemed both believable & weirdly on-brand but I don’t have supporting links for…for much the same reasons I don’t expect to be watching the movie anytime soon, I suppose?

  5. What I Watched: NCIS: Sydney. Incredibly, I have never seen an episode of this sprawling franchise but I was gulled into it. I loved the two episodes I saw. A crew of quirky, wisecracking Americans and Australians have to work together to solve crimes. It gets a disappointing rating on iMDB and Rotten Tomatoes and I don’t really know why. You do get the sense that half of Sydney is made up of American military so maybe people object to that.

I also knocked off another episode of OG “Hawaii 5-0.” In this one, for reasons unknown, a Spanish-speaking (although they never speak Spanish, but they have Spanish names) revolutionary group have made it from their home country to “The Rock,” where they have broken into a military depot. This occurs on a Sunday, so McGarrett is wearing this amazing blinding-white lounge suit, and Danno is wearing the cricket sweater that we saw in the last season, when he boarded a cruise ship to nowhere (you know, just one of those recreational cruises to get you out on the water) to find out more about a murderous gigolo who preyed on rich widows.

  6. Rolling Stone says that “Bosch: Legacy’ is still rock solid dad TV. I’m not sure what that means? Zaddy?

I’m pretty sure they are being sexist and implying that Bosch is a show for men to enjoy and not that Bosch is a Zaddy.

    …was that a rhetorical question?

  7. I watched No One Lives.  I thought it was going to be a fun shoot em up revenge movie but it was just a very bloody deathfest.  It had an interesting plot but all the characters are awful people that make it hard to root for anyone.

I’m having some serious Farscy kinda MADD (musical attention deficit disorder) right now.

  8. We’re into season 2 of Astrid, which is yet another European show about a neuroatypical person solving crimes.  The main distinguishing features of this show is how it deals with autism and the excellent friendship that develops between the title character and the detective who works with her.

  9. Just returned from a nice lunch at a local bistro. Escargot and quenelle de Lyon for me, foie gras and steak frites for the carnivore. I also had a fancy-schmancy cocktail made with Patron, ginger beer, cranberry juice, orange liquor, maple syrup, and thyme. It sounds quite twee but is was delicious.

  10. welp…i have another week of not really reading or watching things under my belt….

but only 4 more work days to go till i dont have work for the rest of the year…..unless i decide to not take my birthday off……which…HA! fat chance

if you wanted me to work my birthday you shouldnt have started a practice of calling birthday people out on the big screens so everone can congratulate them

(i am pretty sure thats a violation of my privacy by law btw….)
