I hope your week is going well and winding down for the weekend.
I was doing some yard work yesterday and noticed the dark-eyed juncos are back for the winter. They’re usually my best sign that winter is coming. Hummingbirds leave in early fall for warmer climes. Dark-eyed juncos show up from Canada when winter approaches here and stay until early March. They’re super cute lil birbs too, hopping around the feeders during the winter.
Is there something you see and go yep, either is coming?
It’s all the same amount of sunshine, but setting the clocks back next month really hits hard.
Our local news will start the winter storm advisories for the mountains. If you are a winter sports enthusiast or have to drive the mountain passes, you are paying attention. The snow geese are here, that is always fun to see.
Are they nicer than Canada geese?
Yes, very timid. They just sit in empty farm fields & eat weeds, wild grass & bugs. They are heading north now but will be back here in early spring.
It looks like it’s going to be cold enough for the first fire of the season on Sunday night.
Same here with the juncos. They’re here.
We had to turn on the heat today, so there’s that. Related: I have to put on an extra layer and a headlamp in the morning when I take the dogs out to take care of business.
I mowed today for what is surely the last time of 2023. Unless we have an extraordinarily warm and sunny autumn. I didn’t drain the tractor’s gas tank, just in case.
Are we talking acres? Square yards? I thought you had sheep to handle that for you.
Well there’s the acre or so immediately around my house, and then there are the 8 pastures. There are 250 acres here and only 140 or so sheep, so we move them to different pastures so their crap can be absorbed into the ground and this way they don’t get parasites. Those empty pastures have to be bush-hogged. You can see what I mean here. There are sheep in the pasture to the left, and to the right is an empty freshly bush-hogged pasture.
If it weren’t for those trees, I’d swear that was one of Shaq’s Ireland photos.
