Hi, friends!
Last night I went to the theater and saw the broadway tour of Peter Pan. I gotta say, it wasn’t high on my list of things to see, but when I got my season tickets there was another show I wanted to see even less so I couldn’t swap it out (you can swap one show’s tickets for another with the ticket package).
I have never seen a production of the 1950s musical, but I thought okay, this could be okay. For this revival, they brought the setting up to modern day and a Lakota playwright worked on changing the script. So you know, they were trying to be less racist.
I had completely forgotten how much of the plot revolves around 12 yr old Wendy Darling being expected to be a mother to a bunch of boys. And all the responsibilities she thinks that will entail. Yeah no. Not the right month to see this show.
I will say the person playing Captain Hook clearly enjoyed the role and they were amazing. Also there were a bunch of gay pirates, so that helped. But also, I would rather have watched an entire show about Hook and the pirates than anything with Peter Pan and the rest of the characters.
So, tonight’s theme. Nowadays about anything can get opted to become a musical. What would you like to see made into one? Doesn’t matter if you like musicals or can’t stand them. Points* will be awarded for entertaining suggestions.
I would love to see a musical about Baba Yaga, complete with her house on chicken legs walking around the stage. She would have songs about chasing idiots out of her forest, eating children (really upset that Hansel and Gretel baked her friend), and defeat the CEOs trying to log her forest.
*points are not real, sorry not sorry
Star Wars: The Musical. It’s a space opera already.
Batman Returns: The Musical. The second Tim Burton Batman movie with Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman and Danny DeVito as Penguin.
Superman: The Musical. One actually exists and it’s supposed to be pretty decent, but I’d base mine on the first film with Christopher Reeve.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Musical. ‘Nuff said.
Titanic: The Musical. Don’t tell me it wouldn’t work.
Edward Scissorhands: The Musical. I can totally see this — sorta like Little Shop of Horrors.
LOL at Space Opera.
Star Wars is almost Wagnerian.
“Kill the Death Star” to the tune of Ride of the Valkyries.
Although I could enjoy the Simpsons version of Planet of the Apes
I just watched an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia where Danny DeVito hosted a musical beauty pageant for little girls and he looked an awful lot like the Penguin due to wearing a tux and getting made up by a mortician. Pretty typical plot for that show.
Do you want an actual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical, or just a live production of the episode “Once More with Feeling”?
An actual musical. The episode was great, but I’d want a bigger storyline about her becoming a slayer.
Also a Titanic musical came out in the late 90s, not based on the movie.
Are you wanting a musical version of the James Cameron film? For that “I’ll never let go, Jack” scene, have him sink into the orchestra pit?
I didn’t realize there was a musical. I dunno, I think maybe focusing on other characters would be better than trying to retread the movie.
The Titanic musical has been done!

Jaws, the opera.
YES.
Does the shark sing as well, or just the human characters?
I laughed about Spiderman Enter the Dark and how much of a flop it became.
Somethings shouldn’t ever be made into a musical. Like Cats.
The Singing Dogs: The Musical

oops
I don’t know the updated Peter Pan, but the original, with Never Never Land, is a favorite.
