Sketchy Weather [NOT 30/8/23]

Hi, friends!

I’ve been catching pictures here and there all day of Florida people just out kayaking and driving etc driving the hurricane.

And yes, that’s definitely stupid depending on where you’re at. Today might not be a good day for stand up paddle boarding, Chet.

But also I’m reminded of how in large swaths of the Midwest, bad thunderstorms mean you go sit on the covered porch and watch the funnel clouds. Or how during storms with tons of lightning, I like to stand right near a window and watch. Or how many of us go driving in snow just for the fun of doing donuts.

So, friends, what unsafe activities do you participate in during bad weather events?

  1. When I had a covered porch I enjoyed sitting on it during storms. But now I have to settle watching from indoors.

  2. I have surfed pre-hurricane & post hurricane in very large surf when beaches were closed.  The pre was dangerous because waves kept increasing in size past the point of safety until I got out as I felt out of my safety zone.  The post was more about water quality & when a huge dead fish floated next to me with a huge bite out of his head I figured it was time to call it a day while I didn’t have any similar wounds.

  3. There’s a road up a long gradual hill near me, and I take guilty pleasure in walking alongside it on icy days and watching the poor  drivers struggle to figure out how to climb it. Too many people either gun it and skid out, or drive much too slowly and stall.

  4. When I was a kid in WI I used to play outside in the 40 below zero weather for hours until I couldn’t feel my hands or feet anymore. Then I would come inside and take my gloves and boots off and put my hands and feet against the heating vents.  It felt weird and great at the same time.

  5. On the news, they showed a woman swimming in a Florida street flooded by the storm surge.  There are so many reasons this is not a good idea.

      • I don’t know why she was swimming.  It was revolting and I changed the channel to a rerun of Monk.

  6. grew up with a massive pine tree in the backyard…..had a couple seats under it…rain didnt really make it through the pines….so it was just perfect for watching the thunderstorms roll in across the adjacent fields

    • it wasnt completely stupid tho….we did have the church right behind us…and it is taller

tho…considering how often that thing got struck…i am not sure god is a roman catholic

the protestant church down the road never got struck…..course…it was just a glorified shed with a bell

  7. Jumping off moving cars into snow banks, or skiing from them on icy roads.
