For those who’ve noticed my absence as of late, unfortunately, I’m back…
sort of…
but loyalty is a virtue as is dedication and I really should learn to “centre” my “heart” so I am popping in to say a few words…
while it’s trying to find a balance…
…
Anywho…
The site is going to be SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW for the next week or so. I apologise for the inconvenience but hope you may have centred your hearts around the virtuous bit…or are extremely patient.
Updates are one thing that contributes to this about which you can’t do much – but redundant data is a completely other thing. Redundant data slows everything down, takes more time to back up, costs more $ and being unused provides no benefit. This post is meant to be a reminder to all editors/authors to please re-read this post:
…and remember to rename your images PRIOR to uploading. Some are uploading images and then using the built-in media function to scale and crop which results in a lot of unused data on the server. I understand that some have iCrap products and should be sent to eternal hell for it and others write posts with their phones, for some reason, who might ask, “how do I change filenames of my images prior to uploading?” I am pleased to inform you that every device, including your apple crap, have a file manager app you’ve likely never looked at that gives you the ability to change image file titled, “2893874565940375938758.jpg” to “dog-chasing-own-tail.jpg”
If you need help, pm me @myopicprophet, and if you upload an image you decide not to use please pm me to let me know it is safe to delete without messing up your posts.
I will also add that every image uploaded is automatically stripped of personal/meta data at the time of upload so you have nothing to worry about on that front!
Thank you for your time and consideration…and, hopefully, patience over the next few days with the slooooooooow-ness…after which will be perfect speed:
Speaking of hogging bandwidth, I’ve meant to tell you and everyone how much I’ve loved the Stuck in the Past feature since the day it debuted. I only found out about deadsplinter in the summer of 2020, whenever GroupThink met its impending doom and people were trading tips about where everyone was going to go. Of course I jumped in immediately. It’s fascinating to see all the stuff that predated me, the 2020 Democratic primary discussions, for example, when I believe 87 candidates threw their hat in the ring, including Mike Bloomberg (who remembers that?), until he felt confident enough that Warren and Sanders would be successfully beaten back by the center-right Democratic establishment. Bloomberg was right, he’s always right, and that’s why he’s one of the richest men on earth and served three successive terms as NYC Mayor. Twice as a Republican and the last as an “independent.” Sorry, I’m getting sidetracked, as I always do.
I believe I stumbled across my very first comment randomly, can’t remember the post now, and I said something like, “I like to cook sometimes…” No mention of the Better Half, or the dog, or New York, or the travels, or the neverending backstories that I have since tortured you with.
So thanks for Stuck in the Past, and everything else of course!
With time on my hands I decided to revisit the life of Gabe Kaplan. I thought for some reason he died young in some tragic way but no, he’s still alive (76) and is…a professional poker player? Well that’s interesting.
A lot of the other cast members have died, so Gabe probably gets lumped in with them a lot. Marcia Strassman, Ron Palillo and Robert Hegyes are all gone.
Gabe Kaplan story: Many years ago, network television used to run specials called “Battle of the Network Stars” and actors from various current shows would compete in physical events. Kaplan was captain of one team and Robert Conrad, from Wild, Wild West and “can you knock this battery off my shoulder” fame, captained the other.
Now, Conrad was known for being a tough guy, muscular, handsome, all of that. There was a dispute over one event, and Conrad was furious. He wasn’t going to accept the loss. To settle it, he challenged Kaplan to a foot race, a mile I think. Kaplan said, sure. He left Conrad standing at the starting line and finished like 30 seconds faster. Conrad panted his way across the finish.
To his credit, Conrad was stand-up about the whole thing. He said, “It’s settled. The better man won.” And shook Kaplan’s hand. It was a nice display of sportsmanship, considering he’d just gotten beat by this nebbishy goofball.
Behold its majesty:
@MemeWeaver Wow, I’m German and I want to kill both of them, talking about Jewish and Greek men! A man of Conrad’s generation knew all about the Holocaust and that the Nazi’s occupied Greece in WW2. I know he meant it to be funny but damn, that’s an offensive bit of humor.
@Hannibal Conrad was a, uh, piece of work. Can’t say I miss him.
Shows how faulty my memory is at this late date. But I got the gist of it right.
I loved Battle of the Network Stars as a kid. For years I wanted to go to Pepperdine U because of it.
Whenever someone mentions Gabe Kaplan I am reminded of Country singer Kix Brooks. I met him when he was still a household name, and at the time he didn’t have his big cowboy hat on. He looked just like Gabe Kaplan. It was unnerving.
I actually used to have this 45…
During the “Kotter” era, I saw Kaplan’s sanitized stand-up act at Worlds of Fun theme-park in Kansas City, MO.
I remember it being a good set (I was probably 10), but don’t remember any bits other than a segment where he made fun of Ozark Airlines (which actually existed at the time). Think “Hillbillies in Flight”. Good times, Gabe.
Welcome back, you were missed, thank you for dealing with all of this computer madness
Can you imagine Lt. Daniels as Bunk or Bubbles? Carver as McNulty?
I meant to put that in the other thread. Anywho….
Welcome back @myopicprophet
I think things would go a lot faster if you would just do your testing in production.
…you’re a brave soul, I see
I know I’m a wordy son-of-a-gun but writing a post on my phone sounds like Abu Ghraib-style torture to me.
I naively did my first DUAN by phone. It took me hours and hours and hours and hours for not so many words or videos #jemesouviens #neveragain
I skip all the DUAN posts since I’ve never successfully been able to post a video on my phone, which is how I comment 90% of the time.
Phones are good for a quick response, but authoring on one? No.
@MemeWeaver Now I’m tempted to try it. I’m a glutton for punishment.
@myopicprophet – for bandwidth reasons, do you need us to delete out old images from the library? There are some NOT images that I regularly reuse, but there are others I could cast into the interwebs void without concern.
Reuse is recommended rather than reuploading so you’re good there. Searching the library to reuse images is another good reason to rename images prior to uploading.
You don’t have to do anything, thank you. My hope for this post was for a “from now on” we can all be careful uploading unnecessary data?
It’s something I have been failing to mention since day one.
