What kind of things do you not compromise about? Where it is quality, taste or whatever.
For me?
1. SF TV shows. A few years back I was horrified to discover that I am an uncompromising snob on the kind of quality SF TV shows I can/will watch. This explains why there is a huge gap between my must-see-TV series of Babylon 5 and The Expanse (20 years!) I could have watched the Battlestar Galactica Reboot or any of its many spinoffs (or even local CanCon favorite Stargate SG and its several hundred spinoffs) but I didn’t want to. It also explains why the only Star Trek series in the past 30 years or so that has captured my attention is “Lower Decks”. I can’t tolerate anything that isn’t going to meet my high bar of entertainment/enchantment (mind you, I was a fan of the dreadful Space 1999 as a kid so my tastes have changed as I got older.)
2. Booze. I don’t drink much anymore, but when I drink I always focus on getting the good stuff versus garbage or worse generic. It’s why I don’t drink common commercial beer anymore. Once you get a taste of the good stuff then Budweiser or Labatt’s Blue just doesn’t cut it. A big difference from engineering school where the motto “Free beer is the best beer” runs rampant to my current palate of “I prefer to drink fancy pants small brewery shit.”
3. Food. I prefer to buy good quality food over massive quantities of mediocre mush. In my yout’, I was once enamored with 2 burgers for $2 special at a long departed Kingston Ontario grease pit known as Papa Petes, but times have changed and so has my stomach/digestive tract. I’d rather pay for something that doesn’t set my insides on fire. It doesn’t mean I eat Filet Mignon and Fancy liberal/progressive veggies all the time, but it means that I will pay for decent quality ingredients and focus on nutrition/taste over cheap stuff if I can (I had a hard time affording food during the dark miserable days being unemployed and living with Cokehead Narcissist.)
4. Friends. This is more of a new development as I ran into trouble with the oft mentioned Cokehead Narcissist. My life might be more boring, but less complicated if I had better quality* friends to hang out with.
*not referring to class, social standing, looks, where you went to skule or loaded with material things, but ethics, personality and not being a shitty person.
Or talk/rant about what’s on your mind tonight…
The first few seasons of the new Battlestar Galactica were great. Then they started trying to make sense of the throwaway line in the intro about the Cylons having a plan, and they did not come up with a good plan. Not at all.
I don’t think there’s a problem at all with having high standards, it sort of comes down to whether you let them get in the way of getting along with other people. If you really prefer authentic high end Italian food but you’re driving with other people, everyone’s starving, and the only restaurant for an hour is Olive Garden, you need to just lower your standards.
Same with Lost.
Both ended up as muddled messes to the dismay of their fans.
I guess I was annoyed with reboots at the time (like I said, I can be damn picky.)
Not even Dark Matter (Canadian SF show) or Altered Carbon made the cut?
One sister loved those shows, but I didn’t get into them.
Beer and coffee. By and large, you get what you pay for.
For sure. I do regret all the cheap beer I drank.
Tea. I’m a fucking snob about it. I love good quality loose leaf teas.
Both sisters of mine are tea snobs. This weekend I had to buy fancy tea for them.
I’ll drink basic tea, but it’s not my preference. Like I don’t travel with my own good tea, even though I know hotel room tea options are mediocre usually.
