JFC. Does @schumer.senate.gov not get that by caving, Democrats make it *harder,* not easier, to make the ACA subsidies expiring stick politically to Trump/GOP? This effort to shame Republicans in this context risks signaling to low-info voters that Rs are standing on conviction and Dems aren't.
Gutted by the Dems caving after the blue-wave wins of last week? Sick & tired of us snatching defeat from the jaws of victory? I hear you! Might I suggest you calm yourself, relax, take a deep, cleansing breath… then see if this photo of 2 pandas cuddling is of any help.
slightly demoralizing as a writer to see people reacting to the headline of this piece questioning the premises of the "masculinity crisis" because they think only read the headline and so think it is affirming them
I have to hand it to them, it’s an incredible bit to publicly lose a game of chicken, admit that’s what happened, and then spend the next day lecturing everyone about courage and tenacity
…but if dipshitticus tasticus can sue the BBC in fucking florida for a $1billion…like disney setting their stage in california for the most bullshit defense of rank obvious plagarism to have predated widespread access to LLMs…like a bitch-ass that knows they’re all the way on the wrong side of the thing they absolutely fucking did in front of god & everybody

This is insane. This is literally doing the same mechanics of the housing crisis and 2008 recession but to create debt to finance construction of AI data centers
I’m a SNAP recipient… for the last month I was tightening my belt, doing my best to eat cheaper and eating less so I’d have a little left over to help get me through when payments were cut. It was all for nothing. Fuck the dems who supported this.
I received this email about Democrats caving to end the shutdown from one of the SNAP recipients I spoke to:
🔥 A former president & a former chairman of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI) resigned from ISI’s board on Friday. One of them posted this warning that “conservative institutions are being systematically…undermined by post-liberals who promote a ‘no enemies to the right’ mindset.” 1/
…fuck…if I was the BBC I would tell him we look forward to seeing him in court & in the meantime in order for the court to have a point of comparison the coverage of the man from that source will henceforth cease the incredible latitude awarded the office of the presidency & will instead report with some of the openly critical characteristics he claims to have previously amounted to quoting things he probably wouldn’t have said if he was a real president
…much less repeatedly & on camera…&/or mic…&/or on the internet…basically anywhere he could that didn’t require him to respect a fucking subpoena
Glad that someone has finally taken responsibility for the appalling assault on democracy that was the Jan. 6 insurrection. Slightly confused that it's the Director-General of the BBC, but what do I know?
…meanwhile I get to sue him for eleventy-gazillion dollars for engaging in an international program of eugenics to avoid admitting he’s at war with reality
I feel like we're in a weird world where the average Dem partisan, engaged voter is better informed than most of their representatives
…& would put my eleventy-gazillion dollars into replacing USAID…so
…if the defense is “am not” then you’re just a clear & present danger because you don’t actually even pretend to do your job so you haven’t noticed that’s what your presidency is being used for & you ought to have that ass removed post haste & incarcerated while we roll up that network like you would any other attempt to infiltrate the federal government in order to cause mass death on a global scale
The President pardoned members of his private militia after they failed to overturn an election; they, in turn, pledge their support to him and urge him to use them to police civil society.

The Epstein Files is a powerful political attack for reasons that aren't entirely clear, but people should get used to the idea that we're not going to get a magical document that topples the regime and forces them all to flee the country.
…which…the BBC thing isn’t…even if you’re steeped in the endless assault on possibly one of the better ways to stand up a state broadcaster with a public service remit until it’s a respected source of information in a lot of the same ways as wikipedia the way a lot of the same people with problems with it also think the UK would be better off murdering the NHS to replace it with the US model of “health insurance”…but
I got this useful bon mot from a middle school teacher recently. In response to, “I DONT UNDERSTAND,” he calmly said, “okay what steps have you taken to understand?” And that’s when I realized that a lot of folks have no steps.
…& everyone from the king to the DG of the BBC to the prime minister to the man on the clapham fucking omnibus should have risen in one voice to tell him to get fucked
He's a doctor. He 100% understands how health insurance works and why risk pools are critical. He just doesn't care.
Econ 101 midterm question: Based on what you know about risk pools and adverse selection in healthcare markets, will giving people money instead of giving them money to buy health insurance lead these markets to function more effectively, or will it just lead more people to be uninsured?
While Trump murders people on boats for supposedly trafficking drugs, Jonathan Braun, a convicted drug trafficker serving a 10 year sentence he pardoned in 2021, will be sentenced in court today after he sexually assaulted a woman after Trump freed him from prison.

late to this but i feel like an underrated part of the musk meltdown over joyce carol oates accusing him of not reading is this musk reply that makes it clear he has never read anything by joyce carol oates
Found the tweet that Joyce Carol Oates bodied Elon Musk with and it's so beautiful in its eloquent, simple take down. So much so he's crashing out trying to prove he reads books now. Put this in the Louvre.

the president of the united states, for some reason apparently:
…the point surely isn’t that the crazy has really taken over so much as it’s crazier still that crazy gets to go deez nutz on an underlying reality in which we all fucking live
…which is fucking hard enough without this unbelievable bullshit being somehow more determinitive of significant outcomes than the inviolable logic that it’s just too fucking dumb to be real in a world where the laws of natural selection remain operational in any meaningful sense
You can prevent this kind of thing by having a president who isn’t an idiot child

The US Trump Administration is reportedly working on 15 year car loans. US President Donald Trump also posted yesterday regarding allowing 50 year mortgages.
$200 billion worth of data center projects are being built in the South, according to a new report from @mediajustice.bsky.social.To keep up with the massive amounts of energy these centers consume, projects like gas pipelines and coal plants are also growing.mediajustice.org/wp-content/u…
The data centers, however, would likely exacerbate many of the issues that residents who live in the region are already facing. Data centers often increase electricity costs for residents, and they also consume large amounts of water. substack.perfectunion.us/p/how-data-c…
In South Carolina, it’s projected that data centers will account for 65 to 70% of the state’s new energy usage. While residents pay more, the companies score reduced rates. Google was given an electricity rate that amounts to less than half of what South Carolina residents pay.
These centers could also catastrophic impact water supply, especially in areas prone to drought. In Georgia, one center could consume 9 million gallons a day in Coweta County. That’s one-third of the entire county’s daily water allotment.www.wabe.org/data-centers…
For a deeper look at how Southerners are mobilizing to protect their communities, check out the following report from @mediajustice.bsky.social:mediajustice.org/wp-content/u….
It's funny how hard we have to work to convince the world that uncontrolle data centre expansion is a climate risk when there's a fossil gas power station called the EXXONMOBIL POWER PLANT being built explicitly to power a data centre
This is a big part of why so many data centre sites are just flat-out straight-up building their own brand new fossil fuelled power stations right next to the data centre
It's not just the AI sociopaths pushing the idea that we need data centers. The oil and gas industry desperately wants us to believe we need them and must power them with gas.
Two months ago we were paying all federal workers, SNAP benefits were fully funded, and people could afford their health insurance premiums but a small group of Democratic senators have Stockholm Syndrome and are telling us we have to Sophie’s choice one or two of these things.

…lots of stuff that comes in pairs that are individually things we fucking suck at defining as themselves getting defined as not-the-other-thing…like up/down…& of course…good/evil…which at times in somewhere between some & all places has been broadly synonymous with god/devil…& the german fella…he thought the world trended to rationality the way the other fella had it that it arcs towards justice…& to hear him tell it science done did for the almighty…because science>superstition & we keep getting cleverer & such so we don’t need the crutch to explain stuff we understand now that we didn’t when we stuck to “a wizard did it”…so…god’s dead…bummer…but the devil is vanquished…pass the champagne…oh…wait…we might have a problem

…to move “beyond good & evil” is to make the terms lose all meaning…you’d need a new way to say “as bad as it gets” if it never gets *bad* bad…& good wouldn’t be enough to express how good the good could be if it was still good because the least good in a place of no bad looked notably less good than it…basically your problem is that is you get beyond misery because everyone gets happiness & nobody gets misery & all of a sudden your problem is that the whole way people understand the world probably means they’ll start calling double-plus-happy happiness & some of them will decide they’re miserable because they haven’t got *that*

The average SNAP benefit per month is $177 a person. The average ACA benefit per month is up to $550 a person.People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives. And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.

Rulers, statesmen and peoples are primarily referred to the lessons of historical experience. But what experience and history teach is that nations and governments have never learned anything from history and have never acted in accordance with the lessons that could have been drawn from it.

All I can say about the mostly red states (with the exception of eastern Wash and the desert part of Cali) is they really deeply utterly fucked themselves. Might explain why the Trump Admin want to kill their own voters because they’re competition for electricity and water (and tax breaks.)
…I don’t think these dipshits even clock the part where if they’d stopped making out tesla was worth such stupid amounts of “smart money” & put their foot down on building out FDR-scale boondoggle-friendly but ultimately supremely useful significant energy infrastructure to make the states the world’s leader in the crap that tesla valuation quoted when he did his monorail pitch from the simpsons…it’d be as far ahead of china on that by now as china is on the US…& *even if* they wanted to play resource-hog with all the industrially degraded rare-earths & silicons & such…they wouldn’t have to poison the water table to do it…or force everyone not making money out of it hand over fist to just deal with the double dip as it comes out of their pocket directly/indirectly +/- via tax coffers the ones getting it find it worth dropping the combined wealth of several thousand households a year just to find out how much they can take the piss with squirrelling out of paying their tab on that tax thing
…& then it might not even do that to the consumer energy prices
…but…you know how the business genii feel about that sort of hopelessly stupid thing that china couldn’t possibly have done while they were all busy propping up the value ascribed to the world’s “wealthiest” intellectual guttersnipe…so…instead…we all get this shit for christmas instead?
…I dunno where I saw it but one of these yet-to-be-built data centres listed out at twice the power requirement of atlanta…& at that point you can’t tell me the waste heat that’s a fucking problem for them isn’t enough to probably do something useful enough a whole atlanta might even fucking notice if you just joined some thinking up with well-established-at-this-point heat-pump engineering solutions & started thinking on the geo-power wavelength about what a battery is…moving a lot of water about…which they also need to do…you can do some massively cool shit with…you know…if you’re serious about any of the parts of this that aren’t the burn-it-all folks filling their bottomless boots some more
It’s amazing how much better the general public understands Republicans than elected Democrats do. And I don’t know if it’s because they just like their elected buddies — even the ones who voted to coup/kill them in 2021 — if their donors have simply bought them off or they’re just too dumb to get it. I’m not sure which one is worse!
Yep. None of the eight are up for re-election. They worked out a deal where they would fold while giving the rest of the Dems cover to stand firm. There’s no way there was just eight surrender monkeys — the rot went much deeper than that.
This isn’t just about the eight Senate Democrats who surrendered. 👇
…so…uh…on the basis youtube floated it in front of me in the middle of a colbert bit & I didn’t skip the scene it rolled as an ad…I haven’t figured out yet if I much less anyone else around these parts can watch it from where they happen to be…but…in “what it says on the tin” way…give or take what under at least a few circumstances is a whole VPN’s worth of “national”…the particular show is available as a streamed performance from a portal that claims simply to be that national theatre…with the e & the r that way around…but…”at home”…so…maybe worth a mention?
…so…while I don’t think the whole thing is on youtube…or that they’d want it to be…I went with the text link over the youtube one for that “premiere” in case it tipped into spoiler territory but it turns out there’s also an “offical” trailer that presumably can’t count as that sort of spoiler because only one person has any lines & there aren’t many of them so it’s basically just silent until a not-quite-punchline…which might be a set up?
…not intentionally…but at best all any of these endless bloody posts manage is to be vaguely indicative of all the things you could make an even longer list of that would be worth reading more about than the word-count these clock up on each of their individual accounts

…either way we’re still bumping along like nobody can see the shit in our way or figure out how to move it…or if it’s still alive…or dead weight…& how much difference that might make when it comes to how best to go about trying to move the fucker with the least expensive machinery & the least damage to all the things that aren’t the thing you need to move out of the room so everyone can get down to talking about what to do about all the rest of the shit we don’t have our collective act together about…like why anyone gets to trot out shit about “immigration” that includes shit where feeding them their own words but changing the subject to “migration” in a global context matching the one presently before us…makes them out to be directly opposed to their own avowed policies &/or ideologies & sometimes even both at once which is probably some sort of hat-trick that makes them feel extra clever in the exact way that has kept that smug maybe-the-world’s-most-begging-to-be-slapped-face-even-while-musk-is-still-in-that expression on nige’s flapping gob
…just…it’s like @clevernamehere2 said upthread for not the first time much the way I’ve heard it in various forms & formats & media the way I imagine they have too…the number of people who don’t need to be told this shit may still be smaller than the number that do…but out of all proportion it is galling to have the ones who persuaded large numbers of those people to trust them to…fucking listen to shit that all those people could fucking tell you without presuming to put themselves in that sort of position of authority over others…fail this hard to fucking do that
…it hardly makes sense to talk about doing justice to that sort of augean stables grade mess when you’re nobody’s idea of heracles…but…it’s all injustice & someone had what totally could have been a rap bar one time about how the whole justice/injustice binary be…you got you some injustice somewhere…you got you injustice everyplace…being on the right side of that would appear to be fully de-coupled in any logical sense from the degree to which you are insulated from the pernicious effects of either in ways you wouldn’t choose to be if all you have is “hi, I’m me & I happen to be alive at the moment” in the face of “money says I can…but we all say I can’t…or we don’t…maybe we just say I can…but I didn’t…whatever…I don’t care about how you do it…money+lawyers = I did it already & even if I said I did if the lawyers say I need to not have then I didn’t & they’ll sue you if you run the tape anywhere anyone might notice…but don’t get any ideas…you even say all the pieces in a row out loud like you get it & we get to lock your ass up & lose your reservation when anyone comes calling at the front desk…& then we sue your national broadcaster for a billion fucking bucks because there ain’t no shakedown like a shameless shakedown & these fuckers shake worse than people who don’t deserve to be a punchline because they have to suffer motor impairment until maybe that kills them…of course in a world of truly visible divine justice…much less the retributive sort in “part I:god gets angry sometimes & trust me you wouldn’t like Him when He’s angry” of a certain much un-thumbed bestseller of generational global renown…the people with those conditions & the people responsible for these conditions would be the same people instead of different ones & then maybe I’d have to re-visit how I feel about that…but…that’s a problem for another day?
…I’ve seen the tall ships once or twice in a few places that were far enough apart to be impressive there’s still people who can get those from one of those to the next without using anything else but people…in enough numbers that they can have even a fairly sedate sort of a race every year
…but…yeah…from what I heard once or twice about it from people that gave it a go in varying degrees of earnest…there’s ways for that to be a pretty good time is what I hear…&…you’ll be delighted to hear, I expect…beer…good beer…maybe even “real ale” featured maybe more than rum for those folks…some of which could hold their own with a shanty even as a drunken sailor
…do you think there’s enough of us if we include the quiet ones to try for a good ship deadsplinter & just sack off the land-lubber’s lot for a season?
…so…we can probably say with some margin of error that we could fill out a rota for galley duty…& we know a few of you can lay in the goodies on the recreational rations & mix a mean cocktail…I’m…rightly or wrongly…probably game to climb some netting & play with some sheets
…but…like…before we get carried away…it’s presumably either @lemmykilmister or @keitelblacksmith who gets the bosun’s whistle, right?
…otherwise it might all go a bit flying dutchman, I reckon

huh….15 year car loans?
ummm… i dont think loans that last twice as long as warranty are a good idea….(and thats assuming you get one of the cars what offer 7 years warranty…)
if you are going to pay monthly for 15 years anyways…wouldnt just leasing a car make more sense? at least that deal usually includes maintenance
Neither that nor 50-year home mortgages make financial sense. You’d be paying three times the value of the house (or car) in interest. Basically, as you point out, you’d be better leasing a car and trading it in at the end of the lease before you end up on the hook for massive repair bills. Same with the extended home ownership — if the vast majority of your payments is just interest, there’s no reason to not simply rent.

By coincidence, “Notes on Being a Man” is being published in the same month as Glenn Kurtz’s “Men at Work: The Empire State Building and the Untold Story of the Craftsmen Who Built It,”* which adds biographical details and dimensions to Lewis Hine’s heroic photographs of the skyscraper’s construction process. Most of the names of these laborers are not known, at least in part because they were seen not as men but as “hands,” Kurtz writes—as “something less than complete people,” or, at best, as “embodiments of generalities and abstract ideals,” such as those espoused in Galloway’s book. For all we know, these men, too, felt that the system “was fundamentally broken and rigged against” them. But they are long dead and largely anonymous, and so they can be whoever we want them to be.
[* – amazon link there, I’m afraid…blame the new yorker?]
…anyway…in a different context…a different species of privilege afforded some a different sort of “hands”…& patronage was definitely part of that in the patrician sense in a bunch of cases that might show poorly in a modern-gender-studies light if you delve into the interior dynamics…but…if you’re fancy…you might call them your amanuensis…& their lot might or might not sound the same if anyone wrote their life story up as a book?
Kurtz unearths what he can of their lives, and he finds plenty of evidence of what today we might call men in crisis: deaths of despair; dislocation and broken families; dependency. A carpenter named Finn Egeland, who was thirty years old, either jumped or fell from the Empire State Building as construction was wrapping up; his death was ruled a suicide. Another carpenter, Matthew McKean, had abandoned his wife and two children back in their home country of Scotland. And a stone setter in his twenties named James Kerr was still living with his mother.
…either way…many hands make light work is all well & good…but making light of the load it takes those many hands to haul their way up that left-bank version of sisyphus’ daily rock-rolling constitutional before getting to watch it all tumble back to start at the bottom again just in time for that to be earlier in the morning than anyone who pushed a boulder up even a gentle incline wants to have to fucking be up…that seems like something else entirely that’s only funny the way the bit about not believing in santa was when a different kind of dick delivered that
…so…how’s about a hand for dick gregory, everyone…I’d clap louder than that but I’m typing, you see?
Lot of crazy out there.
Also stupid.
Karp lay off the Ketamine.
Nearly perfect name for him… should be Krap for what he’s peddling.
…I don’t care what he calls himself…the man clearly crawled out of the upside down or some mirror universe & shaved off his goatee & somehow it worked like clark kent’s spec’s?
…that is clearly what would be chasing taika waititi if *he* was the wizard of earthsea…& nothing will disabuse me of that notion now I’ve seen it?
So far, no one has put one of those AI Data Centers here in Ontario. I’d be one of those protesting. Power for People, I say.
…so…uh…on the basis youtube floated it in front of me in the middle of a colbert bit & I didn’t skip the scene it rolled as an ad…I haven’t figured out yet if I much less anyone else around these parts can watch it from where they happen to be…but…in “what it says on the tin” way…give or take what under at least a few circumstances is a whole VPN’s worth of “national”…the particular show is available as a streamed performance from a portal that claims simply to be that national theatre…with the e & the r that way around…but…”at home”…so…maybe worth a mention?
https://www.ntathome.com/the-estate-premiere
…so…while I don’t think the whole thing is on youtube…or that they’d want it to be…I went with the text link over the youtube one for that “premiere” in case it tipped into spoiler territory but it turns out there’s also an “offical” trailer that presumably can’t count as that sort of spoiler because only one person has any lines & there aren’t many of them so it’s basically just silent until a not-quite-punchline…which might be a set up?
You left out these people putting up the good fight to avoid one of the WORST data centers…
https://www.404media.co/a-small-town-is-fighting-a-1-2-billion-ai-datacenter-for-americas-nuclear-weapon-scientists/
…not intentionally…but at best all any of these endless bloody posts manage is to be vaguely indicative of all the things you could make an even longer list of that would be worth reading more about than the word-count these clock up on each of their individual accounts
…nature of the beast, I guess…at least to some extent…when every day seems to continue the streak of loads of people…woke…un-woke…high…brung-low…privileged…disenfranchised…manipulated…clear-eyed in the doing of it…seeing the fucking elephant & noping out on the sight portion of the perception allowed to have a say in anything harder than chidi noped out on *the fucking time knife*…& who could blame him…or is that them…or us
…either way we’re still bumping along like nobody can see the shit in our way or figure out how to move it…or if it’s still alive…or dead weight…& how much difference that might make when it comes to how best to go about trying to move the fucker with the least expensive machinery & the least damage to all the things that aren’t the thing you need to move out of the room so everyone can get down to talking about what to do about all the rest of the shit we don’t have our collective act together about…like why anyone gets to trot out shit about “immigration” that includes shit where feeding them their own words but changing the subject to “migration” in a global context matching the one presently before us…makes them out to be directly opposed to their own avowed policies &/or ideologies & sometimes even both at once which is probably some sort of hat-trick that makes them feel extra clever in the exact way that has kept that smug maybe-the-world’s-most-begging-to-be-slapped-face-even-while-musk-is-still-in-that expression on nige’s flapping gob
I’m out guys, I just found my dream job!

…but…like…before we get carried away…it’s presumably either @lemmykilmister or @keitelblacksmith who gets the bosun’s whistle, right?
…otherwise it might all go a bit flying dutchman, I reckon
…or…we fracture reality good & proper & just having @farscythe aboard basically works like crewing with luffy in one piece?
…&…if he isn’t called monkey d luffy as at least a hat tip to sun-wukong-great-sage-&-equal-to-heaven…I’ll eat…somebody’s hat…probably not his…or farscy’s…because whatever stripe of fool I may be it isn’t that big a one?
Can I be called a Puking Sea Monkey? I don’t have good sea legs (I get sea sick easily), I’m lousy with a sword and parrots, but I can cook (sort of.)
huh….15 year car loans?
ummm… i dont think loans that last twice as long as warranty are a good idea….(and thats assuming you get one of the cars what offer 7 years warranty…)
if you are going to pay monthly for 15 years anyways…wouldnt just leasing a car make more sense? at least that deal usually includes maintenance
…IRONY MOTHERFUCKER
…get someone to look that shit up…or…ask grok & then go spend next week trying to mechahitler the answer into the memory hole so it doesn’t accidentally post your shame to grokpedia so a billion memes can be born you utter, utter, unmitigated misfire of a supposedly human being…you putridly perverse parody of a person
