I’m probably the least tech savvy person of my peer group. When I was growing up, my mom wasn’t interested in keeping up with evolving technology and so stupidly neither was I. In highschool, I used to type essays on a typewriter while everyone else had computers (it was electric at least!). We did get hand me down computers from my more tech forward uncle. I mostly used them to play games. It’s a shame and disadvantage to lack general tech knowledge and computer skills. But in some instances, I’m glad that I have “analog”/old school know-how and preferences. For example I can read a map and have an excellent sense of direction so I generally don’t need to rely on GPS. My handwriting is pleasant to look at and is legible too. I can talk on the phone for hours (truly a lost art). I can attend a show or eat at a restaurant without experiencing the nagging urge to document and share it publicly. I still believe in cash and have enough of it to keep my family fed for a month squirreled away throughout my house (this might be a common habit for those whose family experienced forced migration at some point).

Do you keep up with the newest technology (at least on a theoretical level because it is usually crazy expensive)?

I do my best to stay away from Internet Of Things devices. I really don’t feel the need to keep my thermostat, fridge, and washer connected to the internet and pinging me when they think they need something.
Same here. We do not have a “smart home” and I feel safer for it.
…I…well, I suppose truthfully I try not to think about it…but since I fail miserably I find I’m that way about a lot of stuff that’s “tech” driven despite the fact that in all manner of other design & mechanical sorts of stuff I generally admire ingenious ways to get form & function to blend well enough to have one thing do or be more than one thing
…back when he unveiled the ipad steve jobs gave a whole speech about how there was no need for a device with a form factor in between a phone & a laptop that had a physical keyboard on the grounds that it didn’t do anything better than either & some things it was worse for than both…& I think he & I might have disagreed about how right he was about that or how much of it you could also say about an ipad…but I think it works for a lot of “smart” stuff…here & there if you get the implementation right it can do some things you otherwise couldn’t…those hue light set ups are pretty neat…& you don’t need to be like the friend I have who home-brewed a big red button you can hit & instantly get a burst of music & disco lighting in order to do it
…but…a lot of the use-cases for the bulk of that sort of thing don’t seem like they give an advantage that’s worth the nuisance of setting them up & maintaining them…they’re just extra ways a thing can go wrong & all I need the fridge to do is be cold inside
…& that’s before you get to all the insanity involved in the networking & telemetry side of things…when there’s a decent chance a thing advertised as “closed circuit” has an unsecured open connection to the internet if they didn’t make it so damn difficult to find one that isn’t “smart” I’d like to go back to a dumb TV, to be honest…why the hell would I want an open mic in every room & even the kitchen clock hooked up to an amazon account?
Fuck that shit. The less devices I have connected the better.
I am not against the idea of having a fridge monitor my food intake or my thermostat contacting me but the fact that I have to share that data with people I don’t want to have it. Jeff Bozos and Mork Zuck among others.
Same reason I am hesitant to get a Tesla.
I was the only employee of Nortel wireless to not have a cellphone. Mostly because I didn’t want my workaholic boss to call me at all hours.
The only reason I have a cellphone now is because my suspicion that Former Housemate was deleting my messages or not forwarding them especially if it was a rare moment a female was calling for me.

I embrace tech that makes my life easier but not being just a data mine for a big corp. I don’t use Google unless I have no other choice. The only exception is my EV. Being a startup & the anti-Tesla, I will give them all the data they want. I am in constant contact with my tech telling him about glitches & software issues because I want them to survive as an investor & user.
What do you use if not Google? I was getting a little concerned about data-mining myself and I knew that schools recommended using DuckDuckGo so that children could do research without being pestered by adult content. So I downloaded it but the search results were so bizarre. Usually nowhere near what I really wanted. Imagine being a 10-year-old and the assignment is to write up, I don’t know, practicing your map skills, and you end up submitting an essay about the French Revolution. Seriously. It was that crazy.
I use Duck duck go & rarely have issues. The only time I have to switch is with images occasionally. Google usually has 1 or 2 sponsored pages before you get to anything relavent.
Hopefully Tesla doesn’t buy them out!

it was pretty amusing to me till i realized i was already running late and now needed to defrost before i could brush my hair…..then it became hilarious
still got to work in time tho so i didnt get to find out how well sorry im late had to defrost my hair works as a reason for tardyness
I like 4 year old technology, generally. But I do keep up with music production technology and the latest video games.
I’m also forced to keep up with certain online tech because my wife occasionally has to teach classes online and uses whiteboards and interactive stuff and I’m her in-house tech support guy.
Other than that, I live in a 19th century world where dogs still herd sheep and hay gets baled and lambs get born.
