What Speaks Summer To You?
It’s practically summertime. The windows are (probably) open, you might be sitting out on your porch, deck, or patio. Maybe you’re going for a walk, or driving with the windows down.
What do you hear? What sound says summer to you?
This is the right time to ask, of course, because before too long it can get too hot to spend a lot of time outside. We’re not little kids who get thrown out to go play in the sprinklers.
For instance, before long where I live we get annual cicadas every summer, and their buzzing is an immediate locked in reminder of the time of year.
So what about you, Deadsplinterears? Do the ice cream trucks start running down your street playing the Mr. Softee theme? Do kids sing jump rope songs, or just yell at each other outside a lot? Got a neighbor who blasts AC/DC every Saturday while washing their car? Maybe there’s a song that’s already proving to be the hit of the summer that everyone is playing in their cars with the windows down?
Or for that matter, is there a summer sound from your childhood that always rattles in your brain years later? Maybe the buzz of a power tool you used over and over one summer you worked during high school, the clunk-clunk of the icemaker you used to fill up your glass of Kool-Aid, or the tune your grandparents always played at July 4th picnics back in the day.

Wasn’t thinking about thunder yet, but that’s one for sure.
I adore a good ⛈️ thunder storm. We had one today!
At our place, it’s already AC on, alllll day–Minnesota has had high 80’s & 90’s (°F), since the beginning of June.
We basically went from “Snow” to August in the span of a week🙃
According to one of the well-respected local weather guys, highs *this hot* thiiiiis early, typically means we’re in for 20+ days of 90° temps….
Minnesota used to average just *13* 90 degree days in a summer…
This summer is going to be HELL, temps-wise😟😢😱😱😱😱😱😱
The Pre-K’ers get stir-crazy *and* crabby, the big kids get crabby & prone to heatstroke, if we staff aren’t 100% on our game… and it’s ONLY JUNE, not *August* yet!
I’m looking forward to summer, but *not* looking forward to the tdmps this summer!😬
How’s the humidity there? That’s what always gets me the worst.
Looks like I’m headed to Toronto for July 4th weekend. My grandmother would like to meet HZ3. Since her health is having more downs than ups lately, I offered to visit sooner rather than have her wait until September like everyone else. As a kid I used to spend a big chunk of my summers at my grandparents house. So summer sounds for me are classical music, their specific coffee machine bubbling, and talk radio.
Not a sound but the sight of lightening bugs is one of my favorite things about summer.
I can hear a deer huffing in the front yard. It’s pitch black so I can’t see anything, but there are lightning bugs twinkling.
Other than that, it’s dead silent.
just got woken up by candy……..
goddamnit…..i could have used a few more hours sleep
Lawn sprinklers, first thing in the morning.
Road construction, unfortunately.
And lawn tools.
