Considering that tomorrow is a North Americanized Reason for Drinking Perverting an actual Holiday… what’s your poison these days?
My typical literal Diabeetus 2 poison these days is soda, pop and/or soft drink as I’ve evolved more into my dad than I wanted. My dad was a typical Korean male of his time who drank a fair amount of soju and whiskey but slowly stopped as he got older but still drank wine regularly. By the time he hit 70 he became a teetotaller and gave away his extensive wine cellar to his few friends. After my good friend was found to have liver cirrhosis a few years back, I stopped drinking in solidarity with him and haven’t really looked back.
My typical poison is Orange Fanta or A&W Rootbeer mixed in with the once every six months beer or 5% alcohol apple cider.
Back in the day, I liked having Gin and Tonic, Canadian Rye Whiskey or Scotch with a cube of ice plus beer. I used to drink grain alcohols as most fruit/sugar/corn based alcohol give me a mild hangover.

I’ve been treating myself to a can of Wildwonder every couple of days. It’s been sunny and hot this past week (20°C today!). Their drinks are sparkling, refreshing, and they have great flavor combos. So far this is my favorite one. If I were 15 years younger, I could see myself spiking it with vodka.
I’m intrigued by this. Is it like kombucha and sparkling water had a love child?
I’m not sure because I don’t drink kombucha. So maybe?
There are always kombucha vendors at my farmers market and I’ve been curious what it tastes like, but never seemed to buy it.
That’s hella healthy compared to my poison.
My default is coke zero, but if I’m drinking it’s usually a fruity drink with either rum or tequila. It’s not common though because I’m not making mixed drinks for myself at home and most of my friends are too busy to hang out on weekends.
I had a mint espresso martini this evening in solidarity with the holiday. I’d give it a 6/10.
Better than a McD’s St. Paddy Day milkshake.
I’m drinking the last Sierra Nevada Celebration IPA. It’s on sale now because they make a big batch before the holidays and now they’re running out.
I should add that I’m more a social drinker than a drinker. If I’m out with friends then I will have a drink or two and even then that’s it because I’m weary of getting a DUI (and been the designated driver back in my active social days more times than I can count.) Getting blasted has lost it’s appeal for me.
I have a couple of acquaintances who drink more than they probably should (14+ drinks a week) but that’s them. They can somehow manage it, but their habit has gotten them into trouble more than once.
I have other friends who have family with alcohol issues and limit themselves to a drink or two a week for that reason.
I’m not sure my 20 year old self could relate to my 50+ year old self… (man, you’re lame, I would say to myself) on the other hand my 50+ year old self would like to smack the shit out of the 20 year old me for being the fucking idiot I was back then.
My brother loves soju. Â I made a keg of homebrew for their visit & they killed it in a little over 2 days (ok, I helped). Â I got off easy as I bought lots of wine we never got to as well as my best hidden beers.
As a former Chicagoan, I celebrate St Patrick’s Day in the traditional manner.
