Strange But True: All Around The Town

Golf star Walter Hagen and Australian trick-shot artist Joe Kirkwood were the best of friends. They toured together for many years, and they got along so well because they were two of the zaniest people in the world. No matter where they happened to be, Hagen and Kirkwood always had a lot of fun, but they saved their strangest stunts for New York City.

Once they stayed in a hotel that overlooked Central Park. They amused themselves by hitting golf balls out of their hotel window. As far as they knew, they never hit any of the strollers in the park.

Then one day they had an inspiration and decided to make New York City itself a golf course.

To play their crazy round of golf they went a few streets away from their hotel and teed up. They played though the streets, into the hotel lobby, into the elevator, down the corridor of their floor and into their room. Then they went for the “cup”–the toilet bowl.

That was where Hagen always lost the match. Kirkwood could always chip the ball into the toilet bowl but Hagen had difficulty. He always said it was the one shot he could never master.
