Strange But True: Bad Hop Bonanza

While playing second base for Kansas City of the old Federal League, William “Duke” Kenworthy got in position to field a grounder, only to have the ball hit a big pebble and bounce over his head. Kenworthy picked up the pebble, examined it, and found that the little nugget was solid gold!

  1. I grew up in Kansas City and never knew about the Packers (the Federal League team Kenworthy was on). Kenworthy has a Wikipedia entry that ends with this line:
     

    Kenworthy drowned while fishing off the California coast on September 21, 1950.

     
    So not all his luck was good.
