Strange But True: Football Nicknames

All football teams have nicknames. For example, the Notre Dame team is called the Fighting Irish, the University of Southern California team is called the Trojans. The most popular team nickname in college football is Tigers. Twenty-seven schools are known to use it, among them Auburn, Louisiana State, Princeton, and Missouri. Next most popular are Bulldogs and Bears, with 17 teams each. After that come Wildcats with 16 and Eagles with 13.

  1. My first high school(8th and 9th) was the Bulldogs. I also went to UGA – Go Dawgs! My second high school(10th – 12th) was the Panthers – way lamer than Bulldogs. I also hated the second high schools colors – royal blue and orange – ugh – so garish.
Actually, I just hated the second high school all together – it was 99.9999% white when I was there. Supposedly, they held Klan rallies in the soccer fields across the street only a couple of years before I attended. It was like going to school with a whole bunch of John Hughes rich kid cliques – except none of them were actually that rich.
