In the early years of hockey one of the roughest players was a firebrand named Ken Randall. He was constantly being fined because of fights, and the fines totaled up. Randall didn’t always pay on time, and finally he owed $35, a lot of money in those days.
League officials grew tired of Randall’s tardy payments and ordered him to come across with the money or be suspended. Randall didn’t like to be bullied, but he liked suspension even less. He got back at officials by offering them $32 in bills, plus a roll of 300 pennies.
But the pennies were considered unacceptable. Randall carried on his joke by placing the roll of pennies on the ice. Someone poked the the roll hard and the pennies went spilling all over the rink. That did it! The officials ordered the players to pick up all the pennies and Randall had to pay the missing $3 in bills. He paid.
