Sunday Funday [NOT 29/9/24]

Hi, friends!

Did you have a good weekend? Do anything fun today?

I learned that my Costco at 10:30am on a Sunday is significantly better than my Costco at 1:30pm on a Sunday, but still horrible. I should have gone Friday on the way home from work, but also I needed to eat more of the stuff in my fridge before bringing home new stuff. Mission accomplished but at the cost of a decent amount of my sanity.

Then I got roped into helping Mom clean the garage for a few hours. The good news is we’re at the point after a month of Sundays of this that we finally hit the threshold today of seeing actual improvement. So you know, getting there. Unfortunately it’s not the kind of mess where paying for a dumpster would help because shit needs to be gone through before throwing away or giving away, not just a scenario of “see all that, throw it all away.”

Now I’m making a lovely batch of beans and rice with a bunch of veggies from my garden (onions, 4 kinds of peppers, tomatoes, the beans) and I really enjoy cooking. The food prep part is very soothing to my brain to do the chop chop chop etc and it’s a task with immediate visible success.

  1. I hate Costco on the weekend.  My wife tries to drag me & I tell her I’ll go any weekday but not weekends.  It is only empty on weekends during Seahawk games.  We did a daytrip to San Juan island yesterday which was fun but exhausting as I had to drive & we did some wine tasting.  Usually the best place to see orcas but we struck out.  Making eggplant parm right now while the wife does her garden therapy session though every time I look outside she is talking to a different neighbor.

  2. The skies have been horribly overcast but only a little rain, so I forced myself to go for a little run and didn’t die so it was fine.

Had the first beer I bottled in a long time and it was fine. I should have added more hops but it’s fine.

I didn’t hit any stores today, but in my experience Sundays can be OK if you time them for the football game.

    • Alas, we have no pro football nor big college football here. And while it used to be a good idea to go shopping during Cardinals games in September, this year they sucked so folks weren’t busy watching the games.

  3. I managed to get a decent night (emphasis on night) sleep which is what I need coming off working night shift. If I don’t then I’m miserable for the next five or so days.

I cleaned up the kitchen (actually deep cleaned it) so it took a while when I woke up. It’s part of my six month cleaning cycle where I go thru each part of the house and deep clean over the next week or so. I bought some containers to store all the mail (mine and my parents) till I get around to organizing it.

Once that was all drying, I worked on my models for the next couple of hours before I went off to see mom and dad at the seniors home. Dad and I were both happy to see each other while mom snoozed. I didn’t try to wake her up as the last time I did, she was a bit irate/agitated and made the staff a bit miserable so I avoided that.

As for food shopping, I usually shop when the grocery store opens (not Costco) at 7am (when on nights) or around 9am on afternoons (hey I need my sleep) thus I don’t go crazy from the crowds and the stupid. I try to avoid the weekend afternoons (not always) because of the stupid crazy crowds (something my former housemate didn’t get because we used to go shopping together and he would ALWAYS insist on the afternoons. As you can imagine, I got sick of it and went in the early morning by myself.) When I go to the Korean supermarket, I hit it on Sunday late mornings (because most of the ladies are at church.)

I learned that from Mom who would already be up at 5am so 7am is no big deal for her. I didn’t mind when she took dad with her because he wouldn’t be playing his classical music CDs when he went so it meant more quiet time for me (at least when I lived at the parents home.)

    • If I hadn’t needed a pack of furnace filters, I would have gone to the Costco Business Center earlier this morning. That place is heavenly. It doesn’t have a bakery, clothing, Costco restaurant, or all the various home goods, but it does have most of the same produce, dairy, and meats of the usual Costcos. Bonus is that it’s never busy because people just want to get their shit and leave, not look at everything and get snackies from sample vendors.
