Hi, friends!
How is your weekend going? Getting stuff done? Relaxing? Ready for the week to kick off?
I got most of my summer veggies planted today. So far the spring veggies are doing outstanding (I’m writing this post while enjoying a salad with lettuce from my planters) with the exception of the bok choy which was demolished by aphids and caterpillars when I was out of town. It also bolted, the little jerks.
Last year I tried a few green bean plants and they were easy with an impressive yield for the amount I planted. So this year I got a small a-frame set up with pole beans and I’m hopeful. I also got a pack of tongue of fire beans so we’ll see what actually germinates. My success rate with growing anything from seed is success for arugula, epic failure for everything else.
Related note – I kept seeing people rave about Baker Creek seeds in the various gardening groups I am in. So I ordered seeds from them earlier this month. I was also thinking well they’re out in western Missouri so at least it’s a similar climate to mine. When I got the catalog with the order, it felt a little off. Like the family was either trying too hard to look prairie chic or were just weirdo fundies. Also had the vibe of “big white Christian family adopts BIPOC children as props.
Anyways, turns out the family business has some ties to questionable people/complete shitholes of human beings, including inviting one of those white nationalist assholes who tried to take over a federal property in Oregon to be a speaker at one of their events — because he’s really involved with preserving heirloom melons, duh. (for reference – https://www.rootsimple.com/2019/05/baker-creek-invites-then-un-invites-cliven-bundy-to-speak/ ). So long story short, I’m not going to buy from them again next year. I can try and fail with seeds from other companies.
Ack! Two NOTs. Sorry. I thought it was still me!
No worries! More to read! I’m off to yours. 🙂
Buy from Johnnyseeds.com. Has been employee owned by a bunch of hippies since forever. Seed quality is excellent.
Thank you for the recommendation, I will!
