Hi, friends!
Tech support question for you. Any idea how to troubleshoot a laptop keyboard that seems to be have just said “fuck you” overnight?
I used it last night no problem, then went to log in this evening and write my not. I couldn’t get the number keys to work to enter my PIN on Windows, but opened the accessibility tool onscreen keyboard to get past that. I thought maybe it was an operating system issue, but then opened chrome and nope no indication my keyboard works. Of note is that even tapping the caps lock key the light doesn’t even come on.
A restart has not fixed this issue unfortunately. I didn’t drop it or spill anything on it.
have you got a tiny screwdriver?
could be the thing just died
but 50/50 blowing the dust off and reconecting it will work
It’s the laptop keyboard sadly, not an external one.
thats why i mentioned tiny screwdriver
laptop internals….
the choice is yours now….warrenty is probably void by now
so the call is…. do i want to tinker
or do i not
shits fucked anyways
Sometimes a restart needs to be a full powerdown with no cord for a while, and if the battery comes out that’s even better.
Farscy’s right that sometimes it’s just dust, and if you have pet hair that might need vacuuming.
If it’s Windows they’re notorious for system updates which screw things up and you may need to reinstall a driver, which is obviously hard if the keyboard is hosed.
Great success! All it needed was power cycling.
im a little dissapointed..lol
taking things appart is fun
True, but turns out this lil laptop is under warranty still so if I can’t fix it with the tech support person on phone, I’d prefer not to tear it to pieces.
but,,,,if its under warranty….. why did you ask us first?
thats not how it works…do you have any idea how many jobs you are jeopordizing by thinking independantly?
O.o
fair…but…if we take into consideration the fact that the warranties only give you a whole new pc once yours is sent to them and then you’d have to configure it all over again, as well as, the fact that brighter is asking us because she knows we are smarter than the teenage slave laboror (that is now legal in oklahoma!) working for pennies in the call centre that is tech support…i think it’s safe to say that reaching out here first was the right move?
you know…ive not experienced teenagers in tech support yet….well…that i know of
i get the india department
nothing wrong with that cept it takes me all of four sentences….to match and mimic someones accent
its not a great look….
thank fuck, because i had just convinced myself, via guilt trip, to stay up all night and type out to you the almost infinite variables that could cause that issue, and then list the troubleshooting steps i would deem to be in the most efficient order to get to the root cause.
Nooooo
For future reference, my attention level for this sort of thing is “what can I do in under 30 minutes?” and not “well here’s 29 variables, with 7 alternative options.”
When I was at MS, the 3 finger salute was the first solution attempt to all computer problems.
I peaume the “three finger salute” is *not* what *my* salute is, when dealing with broken/ borked items of a Tech nature?
Because my salute only takes *two* fingers, with *much* vigorous waving of the hands😉
The traditional meaning is pounding on the Control-Alt-Delete keys until you get the authority to run ragged over Windows, but it can mean using both of your middle fingers and then calling over a friend to help deliver another one as the coup de grace.
Glad it resolved. The Windows updates are hell on my work laptop. Some PCs do better than others with those.
Fox News – someone in my local subreddit has reported that despite living in an urban neighborhood, a fox has been hanging out on their porch staring at their cats and banging on their windows.
