  1. Oh no. More furry cows. I’ll be distracted all day.

    How are you enjoying Kalamazoo? Is it non-stop wedding-related insanity? Much as I love weddings, and for as many as I have been to, I’m always glad that I’m a man. I throw on the same suit (black tie sometimes but that’s not that often) and show up and sit through the service, whatever form it takes, go to the reception, dance with whatever woman will have me, and call it a night. The women, though. So many events in the run-up. So much panic and chaos the day of. God help you if you’re actually a bridesmaid and it’s a clothing-coordinated wedding but even the female guests apparently use the occasion to do a little gown shopping.

    I was once at a wedding where the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom both wore these sort of slinky black floor-length gowns. It was obvious that they were pissed because they didn’t like each other and they certainly didn’t plan this, so they spent the entire reception very ostentatiously getting up and crossing the room to…consult with the bartender? Use the facilities? The poor woman getting married. Both mothers had the maturity level of hormonal teenagers but they were actually good mothers, as far as I could tell. Just a little attention-seeking.

    But back to Kalamazoo. Do you recommend it for the leisure traveler looking for a slower-paced and more affordable vacation destination? I once went—that story can wait for another time. It’s too early.

  3. Butker likely became the first person in history to quote a Taylor Swift song while criticizing Catholic priests for catering too much to the feelings of their parishioners.

    Reactionary Catholics want to blow up the church in the name of saving it. Anyone who treats them as “traditional” is missing just how much they are radicals out to destroy actual traditions and turn Catholicism into a Protestant mall church experience.

      • Nouveaux Catholicism as pro wrestling is a good comparison, except wrestling has always been open about how fake it is.

        I’ll occasionally walk by old Catholic churches from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and none of those parishes involved the supposedly traditional setups that reactionaries promote.

        The women worked in the mills nearby. And if you go other places, all of those churches named after Saint Caszimir, Saint Patrick or San Lorenzo were built by the contributions of families where both parents worked in factories, canneries and mills. What the reactionaries want is Disneyland.

        • The Catholic Church would cease to function without the women, too. The sisters and nuns who manage the schools and hospitals and nursing homes etc etc. The Poor Clares run EWTN, the Catholic TV station. The Carmelites make the eucharist hosts that yonder dipshit takes at communion at mass. The fucking college he was at was founded by a combination of Benedictine monks and nuns. And that’s what I can think of offhand being a former Catholic.

          Like he’s basically shitting on women who work for the church while saying women should only be homemakers.

            This article basically concludes that American Catholics are in a crisis. Attendance is dropping, donations are dropping, and people are becoming more secular and less religious. They blame in on COVID but it’s been happening for decades. That’s what’s sparking this conservative panic. And, I dare to say, the Catholics have watched ultra-conservative Protestant megachurches haul in the cash, and they’d like a piece of that action.

            • The irony is that the evangelical movement is losing membership too. Megachurch growth is fueled at this point by draining congregations away from smaller evangelical churches. They’ll happily wipe out a 1,000 member congregation to increase their own membership by 200 and leave the other 800 no longer practicing anywhere.

              What the reactionary Catholic movement is ultimately about is trying to follow the same path of skimming the choice assets off the top and ruling over a richer, smaller susbset. And of course having political control over a much larger group of non Christians.

              They think there’s a deal to be made with the evangelicals, but the longterm trends suggest the rightwing Catholic movement is going to get targeted too.

            • Nazi Youth Pope (the last one) purposely tried to make the Catholic church more like fundamentalist ones during his reign.

              They seem to consistently fail to understand that if they alienate people under 50 by how they handled all the molesters and rapists, and then continue to alienate the under 30 crowd by how they treat LGBT folks, the amount of women willing to commit their children and families to being raised Catholic will drop. Because with the exception of the nutjobs like that dude, it’s the wives who make the family go to church.

              Sure, we’ll be Catholic and go to church because that’s what the family always has been. Your grandparents were baptized at St Gabriel’s, your parents were baptized there, etc etc. We’ll just overlook when the church talks about abortion or other things we don’t like, because tradition is comforting and you know everyone in the family went to this Catholic school.

              The writing has been on the wall for about 20 years for US Catholics. You make it too expensive to have kids, you make the Catholic schools too expensive to send the kids to on top of everything else (figure $6k a year easily for a Catholic grade school), you piss off the under 50 crowd by all their assholery, and there ya go, you’ve broken the tradition.

              As any marketing expert can tell you, hook ’em young and you’ve got customers for life. You stop hooking them as kids in the parochial schools and you’re in a slow death spiral.

              • I’ve never understood why parents shell out for Catholic school. I don’t see any decent return on investment. A girl that was a friend of my daughter’s in elementary school and in the same gifted program was moved into Catholic middle school and high school by her parents at a stunning $15K per year. She got into a mediocre college in the Midwest and dropped out. Last I heard she was working in a restaurant. I’m pretty sure you don’t need to spend over $100K to work in food services. Perhaps not coincidentally their second daughter was moved into public school.

                It’s basically the same thing you see in higher education. Very few universities are worth incurring massive debt for. It doesn’t pay off. My kid went to public school and a state college and so far it’s all been free.

                • Racism or family tradition. Sometimes both. Also bigotry.

                  Like there are parishes where the tradition is a big deal – three or four generations might have gone to St Ambrose or something. That typically occurs in parishes in older cities or suburbs.

                  But otherwise? Once you leave highly diverse population areas the Catholic primary schools skew very white and conservative. In the 12 years I was in Catholic school, only 1 other student was black and he wasn’t in my grade and he was adopted. That’s a feature, not a bug. A subset of white parents are very happy that their kids are not in integrated schools and that they aren’t having to have learn about scary things like gay people or sex ed.

                  • That tracks with these people, actually. We were friendly for a while and I’m pretty sure they were closet MAGAs. Protecting your offspring from all that diversity is damn expensive, though. And it didn’t really seem to lead to much.
