I love how if you spotted me “World’s Fastest Accountant” it would take me about 50 guesses to get to “oh, you mean running!”
I went through about 5 scenarios before I clicked the link. Most tax returns processed? Quickest to assemble financial statements? Fastest financial analysis? Best typist? Completed CPA exam the quickest?
Oh, running.
I assumed it was fastest to send invoices to customers.

Ever wonder why the political press does endless diner safaris to “explain” why voters in the Midwest back Trump, but never does them to explain why Democrats have flipped control of state governments in Minnesota and Michigan, how Wisconsin just handed their state Supreme Court to liberals, or how Ohio might have just voted for abortion rights?

For all of their preaching about how liberals need to get out of their bubbles, it’s pretty obvious political reporters have been reinforcing for years their own patronizing bubble view of people outside NYC and DC.
At this point, I honestly believe many journalists see their jobs (and associated paychecks) as dependent on overtly or tacitly supporting the right. As I noted yesterday, a favorite Republican tactic is cherry-picking a single data point and extrapolating that to an entire population. Either consciously or subconsciously, the press does the exact same thing. So one mouth-breather in a diner in Iowa is more important that 100,000 suburban moms in Atlanta. And they keep getting everything wrong (see the “red wave”) but they keep doubling down on the same stupidity. So they’ll bray incessantly about Biden’s unpopularity, while ignoring the 800-lbs gorilla of abortion rights.
Now, journalists are either actually that stupid and lazy, or they’re doing it deliberately. At this point, I have to say it’s deliberate. They’re abetting the right-wing narrative by parroting it without any support or analysis.
Which is pretty much what you’ve been saying all along.
I think the best way to look at it is that political consulting is a huge business, and they have created a revolving door system with the political press. People move back and forth between the media and consulting work in lucrative ways which contain blatant conflicts of interest, and nobody in the press blinks. Consultants give the press much of the content they need to function, and the press can’t imagine a world without them.
So when people talk about money as a driver for the political press they’re not exactly wrong, but it has a lot more to do with the economics of lobbying and campaigns than ratings or clicks.
And the other thing is that political consulting is always linked to ideology. And since the political consulting world leans heavily to the right, that drives the entangled media that way too.
And what’s become clearer in recent years is that so many big businesses aren’t neutral money making machines, they are in fact driven by right wing ideology even when it hurts their finances. The press is no exception.
