TGIF! [DOT 20/10/23]

Hi gang! Hope you’re having a good week so far. All I’ve got it at least it is Friday and I can work from home. We are doing a neighborhood Oktoberfest this weekend (yes I know technically it’s late). I’m making 20 lbs of German potato salad. That is my weekend excitement.

  1. The 20th time will get you….everytime…

    • 😂 I literally lol’d at this comment.

    • Did he yell out “get ready Elizabeth, I’m coming to join you!”?

    • I was reminded of Dirty Harry in The Enforcer, when he walks up and starts kicking the guy who’s supposedly having a heart attack.  Exact same scenario.  I didn’t think anyone would be stupid enough to try it in real life.

  2. Of course Powell got probation. Let us not delude ourselves into thinking there will be any real consequences for Trump and his primary enablers. Consequences are for their idiot supporters.

    • …in altogether too many ways…but…I like to think…maybe not all ways?

…that business with the business licenses in NY involves some not insignificant consequences…& if they crater at the ballot box a lot of their…for want of a better word…cover…kind of goes away to a point where they become a handy way to make some examples that don’t really equate to the “we don’t do that sort of thing” message they’d be designed to promote…& then…maybe some unhappy endings get handed out

…& on the other end of the thing…all that loose-lips-sink-ships stuff where the mandarin mandarin ran his mouth to all sorts of folks in ways that effectively require nat-sec level secrets to be treated as though they can no longer be considered secret…on big ticket items like how close attack subs can get to their targets undetected…is for enough marbles & comes with enough receipts that it’s not inconceivable to me that even the off-the-table sort of consequences look like they might get dusted off for a special occasion

…I mean…in broad terms you’re still right…& in narrow terms you probably are, too…but…slim as it might be I don’t think the door is all the way closed on you being wrong here & there…which significantly increases the likelihood of people flipping to escape personal consequences that go the double-or-quits route up the chain until some charges stick…there’s a lot of fall guys between where those investigations start(ed) & the florid floridian figurehead at the top of the dogpile…but…never say never?

    • Even though you know I agree with this, I will note that she cut a deal, and treating Mango Unchained like a mob boss is fine by me.

    • First, I will stipulate that you are probably right, as you tend to be (except in certain cases which propriety forbids me to resurrect at this time).

BUT … the Trump “camp” (hate that word). The Trump cartel is terrified. Powell wasn’t supposed to crack, because she’s batshit crazy. They were counting on her riding the crazy train straight to jail for Trump (which makes it even weirder that he didn’t pay for her legal representation).

The extremely favorable terms (she may be able to practice law again, for fuck’s sake) suggest that Powell is giving Fani Willis something very, very, very valuable in exchange. Powell knows she has to deliver it, too, because of the “truthful testimony” clause. That  indicates that A. there’s a smoking gun that Powell can reveal on the stand and B. Willis has receipts that will prove Powell is lying if she foolishly chooses to do so, nullifying the plea bargain and adding perjury to all the other charges.

Chesebro is supposedly also working out a plea bargain, so whatever happens there is going to indicate how badly Trump is fucked. If he gets a similar sweet deal, you know they’ve turned on Trump. The only stooge Trump can feed to the wolves now is Guiliani. If Rudy caves (and Rudy, let’s face it, has significant dementia and might not fold) it’s going to get VERY unpleasant for Trump.

And, like RIP, my thought is anything that makes Trump’s life miserable is a win. Anything that keeps him from campaigning even for a day is a win. Anything that drains his money is a win. Anything that bleeds off even one MAGA (and some have left the fold) is a win. Anything that disrupts the Republican Party power structure is a win.

      • (except in certain cases which propriety forbids me to resurrect at this time).

…it’s the whether bacon should fold or shatter thing, isn’t it?

…apparently my propriety is…like my bacon…on the malleable side of the divide?

      • It’s possible the case is falling apart and they desperately need her, but so far that doesn’t seem to be the case. And Willis hasn’t been fooling around.

It’s possible this is more about tactics in getting other people to flip than direct evidence against Trump.

        It’s definitely not because she’s a brilliant legal strategist. I don’t think it’s a freebie.

      • Chesebro pled guilty and agreed to testify in other trials. Willis is ripping through this clown posse like a wolf in a chicken coop. Trump’s gonna need to change his Depends.

      • Every time I see a reference to “Cheesebro” I keep thinking it’s a left handed reference to Trump himself.

    • Rich white males?

I make a steak once every six months/nine months because I have a craving for it I admit. No way I want to eat it every day. Same applies to beef.

    • The article says the amount needed to get into that club is small — it sounds like a daily hamburger or two, roughly.

    • I assume a lot of it is men in their 20s-40s who are athletes or convinced they’re athletic. Especially that second group.

  3. The most uncivil wars tend to be civil wars.  /smiles/

The war among wingnuts will be a doozy as the different factions don’t really trust each other and deeply paranoid (see QAnon), all seem to want the world to revolve around them, and they’re dumb as fuck so they’ll be prone to jumping to the wrong conclusions.

The Peter Thiel and Chuck Johnson revelations about them being FBI informants is the chef’s kiss. More paranoid fuel to the idiot fire.

1 Be careful for what you wish for because you might get it.

2 Stupid, paranoid and drugged/drunk is no way to go through life

  4. On the Trump criminal fraud penalty deliberations:

Prosecutors entered into evidence an email from one of Trump’s supposed past experts complaining about Forbes reporters “bastards always trying to tear people down” as they dug to get Trump’s real net worth.

    https://nitter.net/ChaseWithorn/status/1715021355958096199

I’m struck by the contrast to the NY Times politics desk’s Maggie Haberman. When Cassidy Hutchinson was with her lawyer who was part of Trump’s team, her attorney fielded a call from Haberman.

Trump’s lawyer told Hutchinson — don’t worry, Maggie’s friendly to us.

Forbes’ reporting has been central to the NY AG’s case against Trump. It’s possible to report major stories without playing access games.

  6. More Trump fraud penalty news:

The judge is threatening sanctions on Trump, including jail, for violating a gag order on threatening court employees

    https://www.thedailybeast.com/judge-threatens-imprisoning-trump-for-blatantly-violating-gag-order

Trump’s attorney Chris Kise was forced to apologize to two female attorneys for breaking decorum rules.

    https://news.yahoo.com/trump-attorney-forced-apologise-being-084738237.html

Does Trump go to jail? Probably not here. But he’s getting worse and facing even more serious trials, and this stuff adds up.

Also, he’s pissing off the judge who has already found against him and is now deciding whether to grant the the AG’s call for $250 million in penalties plus an end to his license to operate.

He probably doesn’t have that kind of liquidity.

Eric Trump is now in the spotlight for his role in the fraud.

    https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/10/19/nation/fraud-trial-attention-turns-eric-trump/

    • There was no way that shitbag was going to stick to the gag order.  He is completely incapable of following directions no matter who they are coming from.  From the minute I heard about the gag order, I knew the real test wasn’t going to be whether Trump sticks to it, but whether the judge would do anything about it.  Still waiting.

    • The scuttlebutt was that Gym is so despised by his fellow Republicans that they agreed to vote against him in increasing numbers for each vote, just to completely humiliate him. Not sure if it’s true, but the “nays” keep increasing each time that scumbag gets a vote.

        • This is great and all, but I worry that stuff like this might actually galvanize the GOP. It’s not going to convince anyone on the GOP side that the Democrats have their shit together and that they should work with them.

Better, perhaps, to just nod knowingly and golf-clap that shit-show?

          • Eh. You’re right, words won’t change their minds, but neither will the lack of words. I’m much happier with Democrats standing up and calling out bullshit.

    • He lost in a secret GOP-only vote and now won’t be nominated again … so he CAN accept election losses apparently. Who knew?!

      • He’s probably going to get CyberNinjas to check the votes.
