The Harris campaign has publicized a clip of Trump calling Robinson “Better than Martin Luther King.”
He said this back when Robinson was a known Holocaust denier and tons of absolutely nuts stuff was also known. He’s on the record not just with a paper endorsement but offering major backing.
It’s also the kind of thing that the press feels compelled to minimize or distract from, similar to the way that the focus on Kanye’s antisemitism became focused on him rather than on the connection with Trump. And it’s always worth remembering that Obama was put through the wringer for Reverend Wright, and of course Biden was put through the wringer for his son.
The standard is that the right gets to decide when a connection matters or doesn’t, and at the least the press will amplify the lies with a bit of “unsupported claim” softening. And then we get people like Matt Bai from yesterday’s DOT whining that critics just don’t, sob, understand journalism.

…I forget where I ran across it, which is moderately inconvenient…but I expect there’s a few places that would say something similar – there’s a sort of quirk with the way the polling + electoral college math lands on probability scores, so the chance of harris scraping by with a couple of votes over the 270 mark are basically the same as variants that would put her in the 360+ range
…with more than half a dozen being talked about as swing states & most polls not having a margin of error between the candidates it’s a really wierd bit of higher dimensional topology…or at least wierder than “normal”…which…I dunno…do we remember what that’s meant to look like?
I know I’ve said this previously but the odds of her running away with it should be priced a lot lower than they have been. It’s way more likely she wins Florida than it is he wins Michigan at this point, and that map is solidly mid-300s EVs for her.
Just the other day, ABC was showing polling results from swing states, and they kept saying “super close, even race”. But the fucking numbers showed Harris OUTSIDE THE MARGIN OF ERROR BY OVER 2 POINTS on most of the polls.
Yes, it’s almost as if there is a pre-approved position that on-air employees must take regardless of objective facts. After all, saying that Harris is running away with the election might demoralize MAGAs and keep them away from the polls. And who would that benefit? Hmm.
I would counterpoint that and say while they at the very least want it to be close until the end (and some outlets do want Trump to win outright), I don’t think the “it’s a tie!” narrative hurts the Dems at all, especially given the momentum Harris has and the sort of obvious signs there’s some Trump burnout on the edges.

While I don’t disagree with your assessment, I will counterpoint your counterpoint and say that the “it’s a tie” narrative could actually be dangerous at this point. MAGAs are looking for reasons to scream fraud, and they did claim in 2020 that the election had to be fraudulent because they went into it “ahead in the polls.” MAGAs don’t understand math, polling, statistics, nuance, comedy, irony, hypocrisy … I’m sorry, I’m getting off track.
If they keep hearing it’s a “coin-toss” election and it’s a landslide for Harris, I’m concerned they will go apeshit. They did last time and people died. So claiming it’s a dead heat when Harris has a lead is concerning to me.

The reality is that this could swing, just like a ten point lead early in the 4th quarter of an NFL game isn’t a safe thing. You still have to play the game, and in the end what matters is how each team executes the plays they call.
The press won’t back down though because they committed to a poll-focused model of reporting years ago when they hired polling firms and dedicated staff to the beat, and editors decided to make sure the rest of their reporters were focused on the horse race aspects.
And a lot of what went with that is they lack the staff that can think and report any other way. There are different models for coverage – Jay Rosen has pushed what he calls stakes-based reporting for years. But that takes a complete retooling all the way up the chain of command, and the thought never really occurred to publishers and other execs that was even a possibility.
