    • …I mean…yes…you certainly appear to be on the money there…& I find it hard to really believe they’d opt not to stick their oar in on the immunity thing unless they decide that they need something on the other side of the ledger to balance the worse thing they aim to rule badly on later…& “they give him this but not that & try to sell it as balance which looks like impartiality to a transactional mindset” is a low & shitty bar to hope to clear in best case scenario terms

      …but…there’s a whole jurisdiction element to the immunity stuff that has to do with abstract considerations of whether it’s the sort of thing that has to be adjudicated in the abstract…rather than answered at such a time as it has been determined that there’s a non-hypothetical conviction involved…because at that juncture there’s no way to provide the relief since it’s too late for immunity to confer protection from your guilt being a demonstrated fact

      …&…they have none of that latitude in this…not because they have to accept he’s guilty…but because their originalist obsession should surely point them directly at the part where the text offers a form of relief that is open to the asshole to pursue…states can take him off the ballot…& if he can get 2/3 of congress to say they don’t get to then they wouldn’t…otherwise…pre-verdict they get to choose…& if he turns up guilty then he gets struck off all of them

      …how do you stand there as an originalist chief justice of the supreme court with a case before you with massive constitutional implications & an actual stipulation from the thing itself as a load-bearing element…& pretend you don’t see it like nelson putting the telescope to his blind eye…how do you lay claim to any scrap of legitimacy to your espoused principles at that point?

    • I never expected this to work. And frankly, the liberal judges have the main point here. If this gets allowed, then red states are all going to disqualify Biden for … reasons.

      Republicans are not original thinkers. They operate on a “monkey see, monkey do” basis. But you can clearly see from their constant “impeach him” nonsense that once you point out something is possible, they’ll weaponize it.

      • Do you know how much money some DJs make? It’s astonishing. I’ve been “spinning records” and making mix tapes since I was six years old. It’s not that difficult. Our car had a CD player and we have approximately 4,000 CDs, so I’d grab a few when we’d go on road trips and serve as in-car house DJ. I did not make $3 million a year for my services nor was I ever flown to Ibiza or St-Tropez.

  3. Fritz and Fiona! Oh no. My dog would love them, as long as they didn’t try to kill him. In my previous neighborhood we had our previous dog, a German shepherd, and lots of mounted patrols, for some reason. When she became aware a horse was approaching she’d sit, and then when the horse got very close she’d lie on her stomach with her front paws extended. It was like she was worshipping them somehow. Then the horse would pass and she’d get up and we’d continue our walk.

    • If we’re just wishing, Hakeem Jeffries. I don’t have a beef with Harris, but I think she’s been sidelined too much to resonate with people now. And I don’t think that’s her fault — she’s been trapped in DC a lot to provide the tipping vote for the Senate.

    • Biden is mentally fine. I think he’s too old but the problem is not that he is or isn’t, it’s that his age is going to be “but her emails” of 2024 (while Trump, as you note, has a considerably more slippery grip on reality and is barely younger and is definitely in worse physical shape. It will never become an issue, though.)

      So who do you go to? The answer was “anyone else in 2020.” It’s too late now; anyone else looks like a panic move.

      • …realistically I think you’re pretty much right about that last part…in the sense that communicating a campaign to the broader electorate is like steering an oil tanker…the bigger the change of course the longer you need to do it & you want to leave yourself time to be headed in straight line over the actual campaign season or you keep taking broadsides the whole way while they make more ground

        …I was just curious who’d run what ticket in a fantasy league…because worst case scenarios have been cropping up more reliably than I’d like & I was curious if there was any reassurance to be found in considering contingencies?

        • Just on policy — which ought to be everything but is probably closer to nothing — Warren was by far the best middle ground pick in 2020. She was my #1 choice then, and I think she’s great. But her campaign didn’t really lift off, and was it her, was it her people, was it “oh god we can’t run a woman because Hillary lost” … I’m sure it was a combination of many things, most of them probably stupid and/or sexist.

          I think Harris has shown herself to be kinda bad at national politics, so she would not be my choice, ever.

          Jefferies runs hot and cold. I think he’d be way more centrist and timid than Biden. So, meh?

          Mayor Pete would be fucking awful. Gavin Newsome would at least be a new face but he also has deep, deep centrist brain and has already shown he’d sell out civil rights to keep his donors happy.

          Gretchen Whitmer intrigues me, but it’s a LOT to ask to go from midsize state governor to national figure basically overnight. Not to say she’s Sarah Palin or anything but you never really know and that’s a lot of eggs in an uncertain basket.

          Katie Porter’s great, but not sure about her bonafides in a national election. Corey Booker is good at retail politics but I’m not sure he’s an answer either.

          So I guess, I’m still at “I dunno.” The one thing that’s probably best for Biden is that there isn’t a real easy well-what-about-them second option.

          • …so, I have a friend who’s a fan of this sort of conjecture…actually several but the one I’m thinking of in particular has two at the moment that are contrary to current assumptions but curious bets to hold from someone who has been known to know a thing or two about the players & their games

            …they reckon rishi is feinting towards november but planning to try to steal a march &/or the initiative by throwing a surprise may election…or announcing in may…I forget…but that’s the move they think he’s looking to make to wrong foot the opposition

            …I’d assume either would fetch long odds from a bookie…but in terms of things to have a flutter on…they’re interesting propositions?

            • I think Newsome is the most traditional and likely person for whom that could happen. He ticks a lot of traditional boxes: California governor, some national profile, donors love him, white straight male (my eyes have rolled fully around in my head typing this but it matters to a lot of people still, somehow, in 2024), and he’s very centrist and vaguely bland and that’s really what the party elders want. (Even more than winning? Well. It’s a question, anyway.)

              Now in a post-Obama post-Mango Unchained election world, do those traditional boxes matter quite as much? I don’t really know? But if you were betting on past performance, he kinda fits.

          • This is the problem. I’m 20 years younger than both of them, and even at that I’m not young, and post-Covid I’m exhibiting signs of forgetfulness, to put it mildly. President Biden is, obviously, having some serious cognitive issues, and it’s come to the point where it can’t be hidden anymore. The deference historically accorded to the President evaporated with the Watergate hearings. The legacy media has been trying to cover up for Biden, and the Democrats in the House and the Senate have been rallying around, which, good for them.

            Donald Trump, on the other hand, does not have these cognitive issues. He is a lunatic, but during his many, many depositions he might claim to not remember something, but, LOL, of course he does. He might be unhinged, but he can speak extemporaneously for an hour or two at those massive rallies. Biden can barely get through two sentences on the TelePrompter.

              I’m also not sure how putting on the front page daily that Biden is sundowning is covering up for him? Like, seriously? They’re begging for it to be her emails so that they can puff themselves up on how fairly and nonpartisanly they treated everyone involved.

              • Shutting off the Murdoch press is more than just a step toward being better informed, it’s a step toward shutting down a lot of unhappiness. That stuff is programmed to manufacture anxiety in its audience, and it generates feedback loops that lead its consumers to demand more and more the worse they feel.

                Biden gave a long, detailed, coherent explanation of the status of negotiations on Gaza, aid, and the possibility of a ceasefire, but in that slipped and called Sisi the head of Mexico instead of Egypt. That became an issue for Fox’s Jesse Waters, which he ironically immediately followed up by confusing Kristi Noem with Nikki Haley. Speaker Johnson a few days ago confused Israel and Iran. This happens all the time, but it becomes a drumbeat for only person.

                The thing to watch out for is the coming 180 – when Trump demands it, all of the right wing anxiety machine is going to call Biden a machiavellian mastermind, secretly orchestrating an intricate conspiracy against him. The way out of the anxiety trap is to turn that noise off.

            • …so…this is arguably not a helpful line of thinking when I’m talking to someone with more than their share of facetime with US healthcare & who contracted COVID while in hospital…but a friend sent me a link the other day to a paper about a study looking at people with long covid…I can’t really speak to how good or bad the sample size & methodology of the thing would rate…& the same friend has told me some horror stories about the flaws in academic periodicals as a subset of the wyrd of the publishing world…but…the thing they were examining…& which they felt they found a statistically significant suggestion of there being something to…was something they called cognitive slowing

              …& with the kind of small-enough-to-be-dangerous knowledge I have about matters epidemiological…if I came across a write up that made it easy to…I’d probably imagine that the same way you can have strong or mild symptoms that might be a spectrum

              …but from what I gather that’s not how the neurophysiological side of things says that works…it’s not a line from “have to make a more conscious effort to think clearly” through “keep forgetting things” & “can’t keep up with a conversation without getting hopelessly tangled”…it’s the sort of cognitive slowing that, if you were talking about a stroke patient or some other thing that might have involved oxygen deprivation…then the if-this-then-that chart has things on it like surrendering your driver’s license

              …&…if you’re me…that all sounds a bit terrifying, actually…but…it does make me think that the guy who still fields increasingly impertinent insults masquerading as questions from the press about his memory with “my memory’s so bad I let you speak” hasn’t lost that kind of step

              • Right, and the thing is: I don’t think Biden is fully sharp or comparable to a 30-year-old or whatever. No chance, and not just him, of course — few if any 80-somethings would be.

                It’s just weird because people talk about him like he’s drooling on the podium or calling Donald Trump “Ronald Reagan” every time he speaks and it’s like, he isn’t, and there are cameras there, we can see he isn’t. But the tenor of the complaints is apocalyptic. And ultimately, no, he ain’t my first choice, but full crazy is always gonna be my last choice.

                 

                • To conclude on this little comment thread, I totally agree. I’d rather castrate myself with a dull pair of scissors than vote for Donald Trump. But, c’mon. How would you like to have Joe Biden babysit your kids. Or drive them to an appointment.

                  Fortunately for me Alzheimer’s is unknown in my family, so I don’t have a lot of first-hand experience with it, but recently he confused the President of Egypt with the President of Mexico? And couldn’t remember when he was VP?

                  I’m not getting this out of the Post, they’ve kind of gone behind a soft paywall (remove the adblocker.) This is not a “vast right-wing conspiracy.” It’s objective truth. Watching him speak, you think, “How cruel. But if this is what he wants…”

                  Imagine a debate between him and Trump this year. Trump would babble on and on non-stop, the catchphrases and dog whistles would flow freely, and Biden would say something like, “When I was adopted by a Puerto Rican family…”

      The radio was on. She wasn’t really listening. So quite a lot of the main news item passed right by her unheeding ears, and it wasn’t until a couple of key words filtered down into her consciousness that she began to take notice.

      Someone called A Spokesman sounded close to hysteria.

      “And precisely how much nuclear material has escaped?” said the interviewer.

      There was a pause. “We wouldn’t say escaped,” said the spokesman. “Not escaped. Temporarily mislaid.”

    • The weird thing to me is that you just can’t shove a 200-foot tower into your pocket and run. It had to take hours to dismantle and disassemble or cut apart, and trucks had to be used to transport it somewhere (scrapyard?). Nobody noticed when the tower stopped transmitting and sent out a repairman?

      • This article says they’ve gone silent on occasion due to deferred maintenance issues, and they seem to have some spotty financial issues too. Maybe someone knew management wouldn’t catch on, or were tipped off?

      • …this has been sitting with me all day…I know ockham would have at least 5 answers that would beat it…but you had me imagining a slick-like-the-movies operation where they turned up with truckloads of equipment & personnel & clipped a line to the antenna & had a helicopter hover there while they disassembled the support structure & got that all loaded & stowed & ready to roll…then at the last moment they cut the power unplug/sever all the connections…the helo does some nifty wiggling to coil the dangling cables onto the remaining empty flat-loader…& modest horde of henchmen make like the kids at wimbledon when it rains & whip some cargo nets across to get the whole thing tied down in double time…& the next thing you know you cut from a guy tapping a warning light to see if it’s just a short to a settling cloud of dust where there used to be a tower
