Yeah, the 14th Amendment doesnโt mean anything to these right wingers. So, once again, โoriginalismโ only means what they want it to mean. The same thing will happen with the immunity case.
…I mean…yes…you certainly appear to be on the money there…& I find it hard to really believe they’d opt not to stick their oar in on the immunity thing unless they decide that they need something on the other side of the ledger to balance the worse thing they aim to rule badly on later…& “they give him this but not that & try to sell it as balance which looks like impartiality to a transactional mindset” is a low & shitty bar to hope to clear in best case scenario terms
…but…all the same…the sheer…gall of it…it’s honestly astonishing to me, even if it shouldn’t be & indeed isn’t necessarily surprising?
…like…to get there roberts had to leapfrog clear over the whole constitutional element & go straight to the part that’s “viewed as a partisan attempt to remove an opponent from the field we have to assume that there would be mirror reprisals that would be successful & that would be bad”
…&…I get that the questions jackson asked that seemed not out of step with that might legitimately be rooted in a sincere desire not to put forth a ruling that opens the door to future vexatious shenanigans…that part makes sense when it’s a pretty obvious string they’re looking to add to their bow the way they have indicting the president
…but…there’s a whole jurisdiction element to the immunity stuff that has to do with abstract considerations of whether it’s the sort of thing that has to be adjudicated in the abstract…rather than answered at such a time as it has been determined that there’s a non-hypothetical conviction involved…because at that juncture there’s no way to provide the relief since it’s too late for immunity to confer protection from your guilt being a demonstrated fact
…&…they have none of that latitude in this…not because they have to accept he’s guilty…but because their originalist obsession should surely point them directly at the part where the text offers a form of relief that is open to the asshole to pursue…states can take him off the ballot…& if he can get 2/3 of congress to say they don’t get to then they wouldn’t…otherwise…pre-verdict they get to choose…& if he turns up guilty then he gets struck off all of them
…how do you stand there as an originalist chief justice of the supreme court with a case before you with massive constitutional implications & an actual stipulation from the thing itself as a load-bearing element…& pretend you don’t see it like nelson putting the telescope to his blind eye…how do you lay claim to any scrap of legitimacy to your espoused principles at that point?
[…I know the obvious answer is that they never had any actual attachment to their “principles”…but…they obviously care about being taken seriously…& I just wonder how their egos & self-image can withstand being made to paint themselves as craven hacks in such incredibly dumb ways that undermine everything they claim to consider important…it’s got to be eating them alive?]
I never expected this to work. And frankly, the liberal judges have the main point here. If this gets allowed, then red states are all going to disqualify Biden for … reasons.
Republicans are not original thinkers. They operate on a “monkey see, monkey do” basis. But you can clearly see from their constant “impeach him” nonsense that once you point out something is possible, they’ll weaponize it.
welp…wonder whos gonna do the music now

thats probably made a few event planners a little agitated
Find another sweaty guy with headphones, two turntables and a microphone?
Do you know how much money some DJs make? It’s astonishing. I’ve been “spinning records” and making mix tapes since I was six years old. It’s not that difficult. Our car had a CD player and we have approximately 4,000 CDs, so I’d grab a few when we’d go on road trips and serve as in-car house DJ. I did not make $3 million a year for my services nor was I ever flown to Ibiza or St-Tropez.
you know…i knew they made a lot of money…and lord knows i’d take 3 mil a year and be happy
but man…..tiesto and calvin harris make…slightly more than that

…if we’re really lucky that’ll be when taylor announces that she’s completed her wholesale campaign of world domination…reveals she’s actually an alien…& unveils mysterious advanced technology that can fix all our shit & is powered by dropping all the nukes we’ve got in a big hopper that uses them for the whole more-out-than-in fusion power trick
…but…since that seems unlikely…we should say it’s happening anyway & see how far we can get the conspiracy nuts to go out of their minds this side of monday?
I’ve liked Tiesto for a long time, so I’m bummed that he’s not going to be doing this. His “soundtrack” for the Athens Olympics (my god, that was 20 YEARS AGO!?!!?!) was my favorite thing about pretty much any Olympics.
Fritz and Fiona! Oh no. My dog would love them, as long as they didn’t try to kill him. In my previous neighborhood we had our previous dog, a German shepherd, and lots of mounted patrols, for some reason. When she became aware a horse was approaching she’d sit, and then when the horse got very close she’d lie on her stomach with her front paws extended. It was like she was worshipping them somehow. Then the horse would pass and she’d get up and we’d continue our walk.
…on the one hand…sensible dog…make it as clear as possible that you aren’t going to be moving about suddenly while in possession of sharp teeth at ankle-height while the giant with the foot-clubs clomps past
…but…in terms of posture…I’ve known a few dogs who adopted that one when they were hoping the focus of their attention would…play with them
…so…appearances could be deceptive?
I think she was a member of the Church of the Equine Divine. She was probably proselytized at the dog run.
Biden’s press conference yesterday was fucking brutal. His people shouldn’t have allowed him to do that. Sometimes you’re better off ignoring something than attacking it head-on.
Special counsel report paints scathing picture of Bidenโs memory
…if I’d refreshed the page in a more timely fashion my other comment would have been a reply to this…but I’m too lazy to use the edit window to cut & paste it across?
Also just a note here that Biden bent over backwards to be fair and let this happen with a Federalist Society lawyer as special counsel and guess what? The guy shivved him in the back, as anyone who’s paid any attention to the Republicans for the past, oh say, 40 years, would have told him would happen. And he earned exactly … 0 bipartisan bonus points for bending over backwards to be fair.
I’m glad he was so pissy about it afterwards. Maybe it’ll be a lesson for him!
Unfortunately he let it goad him into that press conference. The proper response would have been to say, “You think I’m forgetful? Let me play you this recording of the former guy’s nonstop dementia babble.”
…this
…that should be available as a variety of differently shuffled montages so you can pick a clip precut to a specific time by now
…the 5min youtube remix…the 60 second commercial…a 30 second spot…15/10/5…& all the memes you can cut & paste
…in some equivalent of a git hub repository where you can find all the updates & forked dev projects
…so…where are folks on the memory stuff with joe?
…I mean…take him all day every day & twice on sundays over spittle lord flaunt-le-roy…who has also said dumb shit that invoked dead people like they were alive…& with examples that are qualitatively worse than saying kohl when you meant merkel or mitterand when you meant macron…& technically an acknowledgement when weighing the pros & cons of taking a thing to trial that the optics of a situation might boil down in the minds of jurors to a harmless bout of forgetfulness on the part of an elderly man is not the same as saying the president has clinical levels of memory loss
…but…is the prospect of it being anyone else on the ticket just too terrifying an unknown…because the baggage that comes with him doesn’t seem to be getting any lighter & that’s quite a big handicap to volunteer for…& if you can’t keep it at least below the level that it + the incumbent factor nets out to a positive it feels a tad self-inflicted?
…I dunno…I’m not sold on joe running necessarily being the wrong call…& a component of that is perhaps that it needed to be not an option that came at short notice with a side order of surprise…too many people have made up their minds for as many of them to be open to switching horses midstream…so maybe even if you run a.n. other candidate the contest is still the one we’ve all been expecting in enough people’s heads to be all it takes to decide it
…but…if you were going to pick a ticket that wasn’t biden to be the (D) offer…who’d you like?
If we’re just wishing, Hakeem Jeffries. I don’t have a beef with Harris, but I think she’s been sidelined too much to resonate with people now. And I don’t think that’s her fault — she’s been trapped in DC a lot to provide the tipping vote for the Senate.
…yeah…wishing would be the ballpark I was thinking of…like…I liked a whole lot of stuff about the way warren went about her bid…to the point that I think the world might plausibly have been a lot better off at this point had she been in office instead of joe all this time…but…I don’t think she’d tick enough extra boxes on the pro side & wouldn’t untick enough on the con side
…raskin has some residual sympathy for the health stuff…but…health stuff
…hakeem could work
…but…if wishes were horses & beggars could be choosy about their ride…I quite like the image of a “hope you packed your whiteboard” debate between fanta-fingers & katie porter
…just…the GOP getting its ass handed to them by a woman who knows how to know what she’s talking about would be some sweet poetic justice?
I would be happy if Marianne Williamson won.
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/politics/democrat-marianne-williamson-announces-2024-presidential-run
…I’m not entirely unfamiliar with her…but…if you had to try to quantify the likely difference between the pitch & the show that would actually air how much of the stuff on that first link do you think shows up if it did get commissioned?
…I haven’t been through all the “plan” links down the bottom but the main statement is rhetorically pretty solid
…& I’m not unconvinced that a campaign that went as far as talking about maslow’s pyramid couldn’t tip the scale for a lot of people
…but…in the sense that katie porter’s whiteboard is sort of a known quantity…williamson isn’t to me?
Biden is mentally fine. I think he’s too old but the problem is not that he is or isn’t, it’s that his age is going to be “but her emails” of 2024 (while Trump, as you note, has a considerably more slippery grip on reality and is barely younger and is definitely in worse physical shape. It will never become an issue, though.)
So who do you go to? The answer was “anyone else in 2020.” It’s too late now; anyone else looks like a panic move.
…realistically I think you’re pretty much right about that last part…in the sense that communicating a campaign to the broader electorate is like steering an oil tanker…the bigger the change of course the longer you need to do it & you want to leave yourself time to be headed in straight line over the actual campaign season or you keep taking broadsides the whole way while they make more ground
…I was just curious who’d run what ticket in a fantasy league…because worst case scenarios have been cropping up more reliably than I’d like & I was curious if there was any reassurance to be found in considering contingencies?
Just on policy โ which ought to be everything but is probably closer to nothing โ Warren was by far the best middle ground pick in 2020. She was my #1 choice then, and I think she’s great. But her campaign didn’t really lift off, and was it her, was it her people, was it “oh god we can’t run a woman because Hillary lost” … I’m sure it was a combination of many things, most of them probably stupid and/or sexist.
I think Harris has shown herself to be kinda bad at national politics, so she would not be my choice, ever.
Jefferies runs hot and cold. I think he’d be way more centrist and timid than Biden. So, meh?
Mayor Pete would be fucking awful. Gavin Newsome would at least be a new face but he also has deep, deep centrist brain and has already shown he’d sell out civil rights to keep his donors happy.
Gretchen Whitmer intrigues me, but it’s a LOT to ask to go from midsize state governor to national figure basically overnight. Not to say she’s Sarah Palin or anything but you never really know and that’s a lot of eggs in an uncertain basket.
Katie Porter’s great, but not sure about her bonafides in a national election. Corey Booker is good at retail politics but I’m not sure he’s an answer either.
So I guess, I’m still at “I dunno.” The one thing that’s probably best for Biden is that there isn’t a real easy well-what-about-them second option.
…so, I have a friend who’s a fan of this sort of conjecture…actually several but the one I’m thinking of in particular has two at the moment that are contrary to current assumptions but curious bets to hold from someone who has been known to know a thing or two about the players & their games
…they reckon rishi is feinting towards november but planning to try to steal a march &/or the initiative by throwing a surprise may election…or announcing in may…I forget…but that’s the move they think he’s looking to make to wrong foot the opposition
…& they think biden bows out on/around the point where they give him the ticket & he shoe-horns newsome in as his endorsed replacement to be hastily anointed by the party faithful
…I’d assume either would fetch long odds from a bookie…but in terms of things to have a flutter on…they’re interesting propositions?
I think Newsome is the most traditional and likely person for whom that could happen. He ticks a lot of traditional boxes: California governor, some national profile, donors love him, white straight male (my eyes have rolled fully around in my head typing this but it matters to a lot of people still, somehow, in 2024), and he’s very centrist and vaguely bland and that’s really what the party elders want. (Even more than winning? Well. It’s a question, anyway.)
Now in a post-Obama post-Mango Unchained election world, do those traditional boxes matter quite as much? I don’t really know? But if you were betting on past performance, he kinda fits.
“Biden is mentally fine”? You’re joking.
…I figure there’s at least two ways for that to be a statement that holds water without having to make it a claim of great mental agility
…one being that the silent part is “for a man in his 80s”…& since his opponent is in his late 70s & sundowning like a man possessed…I’d say average or better for an octogenarian is a passable “fine” compared to the “definitely not ok” mental capacities of the capriciously embittered ravings of the man who would be king but ought to be permanently retired
…& another being “fine” in the millenial (gen z? x? one of them, anyway) tone that implies a world-weary resignation to having to accept that the matter clearly warrants deep disdain but…old people…can’t live with them…can’t kill ’em…c’est la vie?
…I don’t think we can credibly argue he hasn’t lost a step or two…but I think it’s not unreasonable to suppose that there’s still a pretty shrewd mind behind the stumbling tongue?
This is the problem. I’m 20 years younger than both of them, and even at that I’m not young, and post-Covid I’m exhibiting signs of forgetfulness, to put it mildly. President Biden is, obviously, having some serious cognitive issues, and it’s come to the point where it can’t be hidden anymore. The deference historically accorded to the President evaporated with the Watergate hearings. The legacy media has been trying to cover up for Biden, and the Democrats in the House and the Senate have been rallying around, which, good for them.
Donald Trump, on the other hand, does not have these cognitive issues. He is a lunatic, but during his many, many depositions he might claim to not remember something, but, LOL, of course he does. He might be unhinged, but he can speak extemporaneously for an hour or two at those massive rallies. Biden can barely get through two sentences on the TelePrompter.
If you read less New York Post, your brain would be in better condition.
I’m also not sure how putting on the front page daily that Biden is sundowning is covering up for him? Like, seriously? They’re begging for it to be her emails so that they can puff themselves up on how fairly and nonpartisanly they treated everyone involved.
Shutting off the Murdoch press is more than just a step toward being better informed, it’s a step toward shutting down a lot of unhappiness. That stuff is programmed to manufacture anxiety in its audience, and it generates feedback loops that lead its consumers to demand more and more the worse they feel.
Biden gave a long, detailed, coherent explanation of the status of negotiations on Gaza, aid, and the possibility of a ceasefire, but in that slipped and called Sisi the head of Mexico instead of Egypt. That became an issue for Fox’s Jesse Waters, which he ironically immediately followed up by confusing Kristi Noem with Nikki Haley. Speaker Johnson a few days ago confused Israel and Iran. This happens all the time, but it becomes a drumbeat for only person.
The thing to watch out for is the coming 180 – when Trump demands it, all of the right wing anxiety machine is going to call Biden a machiavellian mastermind, secretly orchestrating an intricate conspiracy against him. The way out of the anxiety trap is to turn that noise off.
…so…this is arguably not a helpful line of thinking when I’m talking to someone with more than their share of facetime with US healthcare & who contracted COVID while in hospital…but a friend sent me a link the other day to a paper about a study looking at people with long covid…I can’t really speak to how good or bad the sample size & methodology of the thing would rate…& the same friend has told me some horror stories about the flaws in academic periodicals as a subset of the wyrd of the publishing world…but…the thing they were examining…& which they felt they found a statistically significant suggestion of there being something to…was something they called cognitive slowing
…& with the kind of small-enough-to-be-dangerous knowledge I have about matters epidemiological…if I came across a write up that made it easy to…I’d probably imagine that the same way you can have strong or mild symptoms that might be a spectrum
…but from what I gather that’s not how the neurophysiological side of things says that works…it’s not a line from “have to make a more conscious effort to think clearly” through “keep forgetting things” & “can’t keep up with a conversation without getting hopelessly tangled”…it’s the sort of cognitive slowing that, if you were talking about a stroke patient or some other thing that might have involved oxygen deprivation…then the if-this-then-that chart has things on it like surrendering your driver’s license
…&…if you’re me…that all sounds a bit terrifying, actually…but…it does make me think that the guy who still fields increasingly impertinent insults masquerading as questions from the press about his memory with “my memory’s so bad I let you speak” hasn’t lost that kind of step
…the other guy
…the one that nearly popped his clogs despite all his bright ideas about internally administered UV & horse dewormer
…wouldn’t trust him behind the wheel?
Right, and the thing is: I don’t think Biden is fully sharp or comparable to a 30-year-old or whatever. No chance, and not just him, of course โ few if any 80-somethings would be.
It’s just weird because people talk about him like he’s drooling on the podium or calling Donald Trump “Ronald Reagan” every time he speaks and it’s like, he isn’t, and there are cameras there, we can see he isn’t. But the tenor of the complaints is apocalyptic. And ultimately, no, he ain’t my first choice, but full crazy is always gonna be my last choice.
To conclude on this little comment thread, I totally agree. I’d rather castrate myself with a dull pair of scissors than vote for Donald Trump. But, c’mon. How would you like to have Joe Biden babysit your kids. Or drive them to an appointment.
Fortunately for me Alzheimer’s is unknown in my family, so I don’t have a lot of first-hand experience with it, but recently he confused the President of Egypt with the President of Mexico? And couldn’t remember when he was VP?
I’m not getting this out of the Post, they’ve kind of gone behind a soft paywall (remove the adblocker.) This is not a “vast right-wing conspiracy.” It’s objective truth. Watching him speak, you think, “How cruel. But if this is what he wants…”
Imagine a debate between him and Trump this year. Trump would babble on and on non-stop, the catchphrases and dog whistles would flow freely, and Biden would say something like, “When I was adopted by a Puerto Rican family…”
…it’s not that there aren’t those moments to point to…but as others have said there are a lot of those sorts of moments to point to for the other fella & they don’t get the same treatment…plus for joe there’s actually not really a shortage of moments when he comes off like a guy with a decent grasp of his brief & the current context…which isn’t really true of option chaos
…but then I’ve accepted lifts from drivers I’d trust less than biden behind a wheel…so maybe I just like to live dangerously?
The pinnacle of journalism.
Putin, in rambling interview, barely lets Tucker Carlson get a word in
Quote: Carlson spent most of the interview in silence, or looking confounded.
…the part I genuinely laughed out loud about was that apparently the opening section was this long rambling spiel about the historic origins of the rus
…& that not only did he not get a word in while vlad rambled on like a civil war re-enactment enthusiast talking about their hobby for…I don’t know how long it really was but in one thing I read they said 20mins…don’t know if that’s 20 actual minutes or a “feels like” number…but he had that patented tucker carlson #2 of 3 gormless look on his face like someone vacuumed out the insides of his head for pretty much the whole thing
…he really is a very, very dumb guy who didn’t have any grasp on what vlad was engaged in producing…& that’s hardly a surprise…but he’s been in front of cameras for donkeys years…that he can’t prevent himself looking like a cartoon caricature of a man out of his intellectual depth is a pretty sorry state of affairs?
At least he has ditched the bow ties.
…can you imagine if he hadn’t…all you need is one ringer to infiltrate the costume department…I bet he wears fakes…so he wouldn’t notice the substitution until you hit the remote switch & it started to spin?
To be “fair” to Tuckums.
If the egomaniacal twit actually interrupted Pootin, well, he probably wouldn’t enjoy the rest of his stay in Russia. It’s not Pootin is so scary dangerous personally, but more so what the very dangerous people surrounding him would do if Tuckums didn’t sit there and let old man Russia ramble on.
He is a pretender compared to Vlad.
…I would be…but…I don’t like the guy…either of them, really…so…I’m not sure I can be fair even if I try really hard…& you know how if you try to force magnets together with matching rather than paired poles the harder you push them together the more wildly they swerve?
…basically when I try what I get to is an image of tucker feeling like he’s a big fish who can hack it swimming with the biggest sharks in the pool…who turns up for the gig thinking he knows exactly what his role is & all the hoops he needs to dive through & lay ups he needs to provide & which camera to be looking at when he does
…& then from the moment the starter’s gun goes off he’s completely fucking lost & has no idea what’s going on
…it’s basically the same thing that happened to sunak when he went on piers’ show
…except tucker thought he was going to be piers in a room with a dude who survived the cold war era KGB…because the confidence of a mediocre white male with a media profile is some heady fucking shit…apparently
…personally I think that level of delusion is probably open to a clinical diagnosis…that would allow for involuntary admittance to an institution in the interests of preventing him harming himself or others
…but I can’t get a face to face chat with a bond villain or a paycheck for having opinions about things I’m nothing to do with…so that’s probably worth less than a tv dinner to most people?
Carlson is too full of himself to realize Putin will do the same thing to him when the time comes that Murdoch did. He’s expendable, but hasn’t learned that lesson.
None of these dummies get it, either, and it’s clear the system selects for this kind of personality type – cunning in small ways and monumentally clueless about the obvious.
Well, except Putin can disappear him forever and Murdoch probably wouldn’t.
Sleep tight, Tucker!
I sometimes wonder about some of the dopes like Allen Weisselbergย who got caught up in Trump’s schemes and ended up getting their lives turned upside down. Do they ever wish they had worked for a guy like Putin who quickly disappears his people when he uses them up, like he did with Yevgeny Prigozhin?
I don’t think he’s confounded.
I think he just needs to poop.
Hey @MemeWeaver , looks like our “hunting trip” is off!

Every time I think Republicans simply can’t get any stupider, I am proven wrong. Every time.
@Loveshaq, I wish this kind of thing was weird for here, but it’s just business as usual for the Eastern Idaho wingnuts.
We always celebrate when the Legislature session closes because it means a huge improvement for Boise’s mental health.
โWhat do you mean, the tower is gone?โ: thieves steal 200ft structure from Alabama radio station
This quote killed me:
Sir, as it just so happens….
…can’t find it as a you tube clip from the one with david tennant in but you know the bit about life imitating art?
Spot-on, @SplinterRIP. Absolutely perfect.
The weird thing to me is that you just can’t shove a 200-foot tower into your pocket and run. It had to take hours to dismantle and disassemble or cut apart, and trucks had to be used to transport it somewhere (scrapyard?). Nobody noticed when the tower stopped transmitting and sent out a repairman?
This article says they’ve gone silent on occasion due to deferred maintenance issues, and they seem to have some spotty financial issues too. Maybe someone knew management wouldn’t catch on, or were tipped off?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/WJLX
…this has been sitting with me all day…I know ockham would have at least 5 answers that would beat it…but you had me imagining a slick-like-the-movies operation where they turned up with truckloads of equipment & personnel & clipped a line to the antenna & had a helicopter hover there while they disassembled the support structure & got that all loaded & stowed & ready to roll…then at the last moment they cut the power unplug/sever all the connections…the helo does some nifty wiggling to coil the dangling cables onto the remaining empty flat-loader…& modest horde of henchmen make like the kids at wimbledon when it rains & whip some cargo nets across to get the whole thing tied down in double time…& the next thing you know you cut from a guy tapping a warning light to see if it’s just a short to a settling cloud of dust where there used to be a tower
…in that movie…what’s the evil macguffin that needs to be broadcast over AM bands like dr evil’s latest defrosted-from-the-70s gambit?
