That tracks. [NOT 14/2/24]

Hi, friends!

What’s something that’s just a perfect stereotype of where you live? Or the fans of a team you dislike or maybe do love? Or a profession you’re in?

Gotta tell you, a shooting at the Superbowl parade is 100% on brand for Missouri. At least it’s Kansas City and not my side of the state tonight.

It’s only 4pm so who knows what additional info might come out in the next 2 hours before this NOT goes up. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just two dipshits shooting at each other over some bullshit that started it all. We’ve had plenty of shootings here where there’s multiple victims of a drive by who are just wrong place wrong time.

  1. My first thoughts when I saw the nonstop news of the shooting on MSNBC was that some MAGA crazy was going crazy.  They are trying to say that was probably not it but haven’t really put out any theory.  In any case, Marshawn speaks for all of us Seahawks fans…

Completely off the cuff, sounds like he might have had severe cirrhosis and had esophageal varices rupture.

were gonna take are cuntry back!

    • I think that about covers it, but how does that tie into the JFK assassination? And the fake moon landing that was actually filmed on a Hollywood studio’s back lot? And the controlled demolition of the World Trade Center, because otherwise the buildings would have tipped over and crashed onto other things, rather than collapsing into themselves. I have done my own research.

  4. I’ll probably curse things, but I live in a state with a (relative for the US) low overall murder rate, and my city, which has traditionally been the deadliest place in the state, is actually seeing a major drop closer to the state norm. It’s still a long way away, but the drop in the murder rate over the past few years has been significant.

It’s happened against a backdrop of a federal consent decree over the city police department to require a major drop in “get tough” tactics, and longterm studies have shown that arbitrary arrests have also dropped significantly. Which makes sense, because there’s no connection between police crackdowns and crime prevention – in fact, what tended to happen is the cops would make a bunch of weak arrests to hassle people right at the end of their shifts so they could stay late and get overtime.

What’s also happened is a shift in resources toward non-police interventions and efforts to reach people deemed likely to engage in crime, and then steer them toward employment and drug treatment.

Of course there’s a right wing reaction, and efforts to throw out the current administration in favor of get tough policies, and the local Sinclair station is doing its best to propagandize around the issue.

It’s absolutely maddening to see people who drink in the right wing media machine propaganda start moaning about crime and “those people” and the operate in complete and utter denial of the facts of the past few years. They feel bad about themselves, and they want everyone else to get worse too.

It’s not some cynical game like trying to cut bear hunting restrictions or force kids to say the Pledge of Allegiance twice a day. It’s about blowing up programs which are making a major, tangible difference in the life and death of the neediest people in my city, and it’s because a bunch of needy right wingers keep circling the drain looking for more and more paranoia.

    • St Louis city’s murder rates are way down compared to 2022. Of course the panicked suburban narrative hasn’t changed.

      • It’s happening in a lot of cities, and it infuriates a lot of right wingers because all of their narratives are cracking. It sure would help if the establishment press cared about the change, but they are wedded to so many of the same myths as the right.

  5. Engineers gotta engineer. Most of my profession are right wingers. If you ever see a science person shit all over global climate change… 9 times out of 10 it is usually an engineer who thinks he knows more about climate than an actual climate scientist.

    • Absolutely this. I’ve been exposed to both traditional engineers (mechanical, structural) and tech (software, hardware, network), and all of them think life can be boiled down to a small number of formulas. Nuance or variability are just not a thing, and I hate those guys (I’ve met maybe 2 women engineers who fit that mold).

      • I’m a freak in my profession. I blame that on learning stuff like humanities outside STEM.

        • Seriously, you’ve done an excellent job!

    • There was a running series of letters in Ann Landers from wives of engineers comenting about the stereotypical personality type of their husbands, some who were miserable and some who had reached equilibrium.

The interesting thing is within that group I’ve met the occasional engineer who fit the type but was also a delight. They had the kind of self awareness needed to keep it within appropriate levels and the kind of perspective to see that other ways aren’t wrong. And then they had the kind of quirky interests that go with engineers to do interesting things.

      • I come from a family of engineers of all types, stationary, electrical, software, mechanical, you name it. Meanwhile I can barely change a light bulb. They’re incredibly handy to have around because for some reason their engineerishness translates into other useful skills, like carpentry and appliance and auto repair. I guess it’s their curiosity about How Things Work.

        • True. I once spent part of a vacation helping a friend build up his garage shelving. His (now ex) wife thought it was funny that we didn’t yell at each other or fight like her dad and brothers did doing similar work. We worked in near silence except when one of us would ask if it was time for lunch or to verify a dimension. It was quiet brutal efficiency and done in a weekend.

My friend was an engineering classmate.

      • My mom used to cut out those articles and send them to me when I was in university.

I thought they were funny till I realized I was one of them.

  6. I mean, every pickup flying a Trump flag or Gadsden flag is pretty much showing everyone how Idaho is gonna Idaho.

  7. Fucking coyote. Same coyote time. Same coyote place. It’s been happening so consistently that I’m used to being up between 2-4:30. Is it weird that it only lets out one or two shouts at the same time every night? Maybe the ravine behind my house is part of its patrolling territory. I guess I could take advantage of my insomnia and look up coyote facts. Maybe I find out how to kill long coyotes live for.

    • Does that make you the Coyote and the Coyote the roadrunner?
