It’s the annual day of giving for my college.
And fine, sure. In previous years I’ve sent money to the arts programs. It’s kind of surreal since that to Missouri’s race to the bottom, they’ve defunded state colleges so much that my degree is gone because it wasn’t “profitable” enough.
One of the big pushes this year is to donate to the Campus Food Pantry.
I really fundamentally hate that food pantries need to exist on colleges that have fucking dining halls.
I understand that there are scenarios where a student might not be on campus when they’re open or be helping to subsidize their household. I get that there are completely valid reasons for this need that a campus dining hall (there are actually 4 there) but the email I got presented it as helping students on campus.
So there are places all day long that have food. Hot food, cold food. Sandwiches. Salads. Ice cream. Pizza. Actual meals.
But fuck ’em, those poors need a food pantry if they can’t afford a meal plan.
Am I still going to donate to it? Probably. But I’m salty about it.
That’s very fucked up, but then I can’t be all smug as our oaf of a premier tried to buy his own fuck plane (used!) while chopping the student loan program. It took a lot of yelling and screaming over the weekend for him to put it up for sale (at a loss.) At least Ontario won’t be stuck with Dipshit One.
My alma mater used to ask me for cash. If it was from electrical (my school) I hung up.
I used to give money to everyone except my Dept. If you’re wondering why… Well, my academic advisor took great pains to keep my name off the graduation list and I couldn’t forgive him for that. I found out indirectly when I called the engineering school registrar asking WTF why am I not on the graduation list and they were very helpful and basically blamed EE for the “omission.”
It explained why I snubbed him publicly on the stage when he tried to shake my hand. My parents were not pleased that I would be such a dick. I had my reasons and I wasn’t going to explain it to mom and dad (they were already pissed with me being a fuck up in school and would be less than pleased that I was making enemies already.)
Yay, we are back! We get 3 to 5 of requests from our schools & our daughter’s schools asking for money each week. They just fucking graduated! You still want me to pay after they are out and not really making enough that we don’t have to subsidize them? Check back in a few years maybe?
Surprisingly, my high school seems to have given up asking me for money for now.
I just gave my college a nominal amount because we have our 30th reunion coming up in May and it was important to them that they try and get 100% participation for the ‘class gift’ and I’ll be damned if those boomers from the class of ’86 beat us.
I refuse to give money to my alma mater because I feel they failed their end of the bargain. I would have been better off, professionally, finding work in the business after high school and just working my way up the career ladder. I am thankful for the lasting friendships that came about during those years, but that’s really it. The academics were shite.

well…i guess not as shocked as i may once have been as im getting a deadsplinter education on how the usa works nowadays….but still
All you need to know is the highest paid state employee in most states is the best college football coach. It is usually not even close. Out education system is totally fucked!
