How goes the gift getting and sending process with everyone? Taking “advantage” of Cyber Monday today?

Caveat emptor: A third of Black Friday deals aren’t really discounts, study reveals

Because my wife had some time off to help her mom pre-, during, and post-surgery, we have most of the gifts for out-of-town family and friends purchased and sent! That’s the only way I could author this post, because if it was a normal year, I’d be too stressed out to discuss it.

It’s been very much about practicality this year. None of the gifts have been the zany novelty type thing. Instead the question has been, “Will they use it?”

BIG PLUS: I am doing my utmost to avoid Amazon, and have been successful thus far. I will probably have to break down and consult my mother’s Amazon wish list, though, as she has both a December birthday and Christmas within 10 days of each other.

  1. We had snow roll in around 11am that everyone thought would start around 4pm.
Naturally, MODOT decided their plans this morning would be “thoughts and prayers” and had nothing pretreated on highways when it started.
I abandoned work around 11am and luckily was driving away fron the storm so my commute wasn’t bad – nothing was treated but not enough had fallen to slush it up yet. Coworkers with 20-45 minute normal commutes had 2-2.5 hours if they left even about 30 minutes later than I did.
Call me crazy, but I feel like firing all those NWS staffers has made an impact on our forecasting models this year. JUST SAYING.

  2. We are trying not to buy normal gifts this year & going to give the girls and each other travel experiences. At least that is what the wife is telling me now but she will freak out at some point and buy stuff. I’m thinking of buying myself a new longer telephoto lens since it is on sale right now & I have the money sitting in my photography business account burning a hole but …still trying to justify it in my mind.

  3. I’m shipping my husband and eldest two kids to Glasgow. That’s the best gift that I can give them and my in-laws. I’ll be staying home with our youngest who will be turning three. It just easier this way because they won’t have rent a car or hotel or deal with naps since the three of them fit in my parents-in-law’s house and car.

I’ll still get a tree and gift them various cute things that I found at Dollarama. Dollarama is great for young kid stuff and art supplies. I always stock up when I visit Canada.

The rest of the family and friends get hand written cards from me.

    • Dollarama! My cousin and I got matching rain ponchos there on the way to Niagara Falls a few years ago so we could matchy matchy without having the same ones everyone else was buying there. Made it easier to keep track of each other!
And yes, of fucking course the rain ponchos were covered in red maple leaves!

  4. *buys self new vidya game*
    merry crimbo!
tbh…we only buy presents for the little ones in my family…and im not seeing any of those this year

well…i might buy some novelty terrible sweaters for my mum and brother just for shits and giggles….

but generally…well…. comes a point you just have to admit you cant buy good presents for people what buy anything they want themselves….so you might as well give up and just lean into having a proper good meal instead
