24. Thor 2: The Dark World
No way Dark World gets placed before The Incredible Hulk. Clearly your mind has been addled by COVID 19.
Admittedly, I haven’t watched Hulk in a while, but The Dark World involves a totally-phoning-it-in Natalie Portman falling in some Dr Pepper and turning evil. I stand by my rankings.
Thor 2 also completely wasted Christopher Eccleston by burying him under makeup and bad CGI, and giving him horrible dialogue. I don’t know why they would take an actor with the same kind of energy as Tom Hiddleston and turn him into such a zero.
They did something similar with Carrie Coon in Infinity War. Why hire someone who can create a really interesting character and then put them in such a dull role?
Second that. Not only is Incredible Hulk worse than Dark World, it’s one of the worst movies in any group, ever. FIGHT ME I’M TRAPPED IN MY HOUSE I GIVE NO FUCKS
I continue to stand by my rankings, however, I grant that Hulk was so bad they recast the part, basically the only time they felt the need to do it with a major character (sorry Terrence Howard but you know this to be true)
Sometimes there need to be two buses.
Man, is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 that bad? I know some people didn’t like it, but I don’t know if it’s worse than Thor. Worse being a relative term, of course.
One thing I realized as I was putting this together: The direct sequels were generally the worst movies in the bunch! Other than Winter Soldier, they’re all near the bottom. And I really didn’t like GOTG2; felt like they tried to do too much with it.
Fair. Doing too much is generally true of all of the sequels, too. First movie — tell the origin, include an adventure. Once the character and origin is built, they typically pad the sequel to make up 2.5 hours. The vast majority of the sequels would be better if they trimmed a half-hour from each. That’s true of a lot of movies now, though. People want to feel like they’re getting their $15 worth, and it makes for bloated movies.
Spiderman Homecoming was more of a followup than a sequel, I guess, since he was a supporting character in Civil War. But if you squint hard it’s a sequel, and it’s really well done.
I would argue Far From Home was more a sequel, and it was very good!
…well…I mean that’s completely wrong…obviously…but to be really certain exactly how wrong I’ll obviously need to re-watch all of them & take exhaustive notes…then there’ll probably have to be some collating & comparing of notes…perhaps some arbitrary assignment of weighted values to allow for spurious statistical analysis…& finally the objectively correct ranking would presumably reveal itself
…the dark world isn’t making it past that bus, though
I like this list but I put Iron Man 3 way higher than you do. I know a lot of people get touchy over the phony Mandarin thing, but I loved it.
I actually agree fully with this take! I liked 3, but I just liked the other ones a little. Even “Ultron,” which has some really good moments in the midst of a meh overall package.
