  1. I would swap 6 and 10. Kirk did blow up the Enterprise. I fell asleep watching 6) zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I would drop 11 into a black hole. White Khan! Used as an io9 punchline.

    • In no way is Into Darkness a worse movie than Nemesis, and at least the absurd hilarity of badness of Into Darkness makes it SO MUCH MORE WATCHABLE than The Motion Picture, which is literally just two hours of reaction shots and unused “Phase 2” ideas.

      • At the age of 8 I called it Star Trek: The Boring Picture. It is boring as shit, but the only reason I don’t drop ST:TMP into a black hole is strictly for sentimental reasons.

I am just incredibly annoyed about the whole “Khan not Khan, Whiter Khan than OG Khan” bullshit that JJ played. I don’t hate Benedict for it…

        • I wish they would stop handing JJ franchises. I eagerly anticipate some studio giving him $3 gagillion for a Battlestar Galactica franchise the internet can argue about.

  2. I love the Voyage Home unabashedly – it is my favorite ST movie. It has an amazing environmental message and is the most fun of all of the Treks.

    “Everybody remember where we parked!”

“Sure, you won’t change your mind?”
“Is there something wrong with the one I have?”

    • It’s just a damn good movie. Every aspect of it was done perfectly.

      • …for a given value of “perfect”

  3. I would not include the JJ Abrams movies on a list like this. And the first of those is way too high. They literally explained the alternate timeline like we were idiots.
I have a soft spot for 6, so I actually nudge it ahead of 4 and First Conact.
Also I think Search For Spock is better than it gets credit for.

  4. Honestly, I enjoyed the reboots, except for Beyond, which just seemed to lumber along without any real purpose. I like taking something established and then making an entirely new thing out of it–like a good cover song.

  5. Ear bug of the post.

Enterprise taint aside, it’s kind of catchy.

    • …but…it’s not sssttttaaaaarrr ttttrrrrreeeekkkk

      …there’s lyrics & no voiceover…weird…& clearly scary

…you’re scary farscythe…hate to be the one to break it to you…& on the weekend, too…sorry

…although now that you mention it it isn’t that bad of a tune, I guess?

    • That tune fucking sucks. I was glad I could fast forward past the goddamned thing when I was watching episodes.

  6. …come on now, KC…if we’re including the JJ movies I vote the top spot goes to Galaxy Quest

…it’s clearly the pinnacle of the genre

  7. Good list. Except First Contact isn’t really that good. And, Search For Spock isn’t that bad. I also thought Into Darkness was a pretty good movie. I like how it flips the “needs of the many…” theme around. And it’s exciting. Everyone gets distracted by the Khan thing, but that’s just an annoying detail. The movie itself works like a charm especially as a mirror to the original Star Trek II. It can’t hold a candle to that film, but that doesn’t make it bad.

  8. You accidentally swapped one and two.
    Might want to edit that.

Insurrection should be higher if for no other reason than it features the apotheosis of the Jonathan Frakes, Patrick Stewart/Will Riker, Jean Luc Picard daddy complex.

The commanding “Switch to manual mode”
The zoomed shot of Riker’s hand, firmly grasping the stick.
    The smoke and confusion.
    The intake valves open.
    And then.
    Boom.

ST: TMP should be higher for very similar reasons.
Spock flies into a robotic hallucinogenic vagina.
    It is glorious.

    • …you make a convincing case, there…which I guess shouldn’t be a surprise given those colors of yours
