…the thing is…we know what it looks like when someone who knows what the fuck they’re talking about tells us they don’t have all the answers but they have some sound advice
…& that tends to make it extra unconvincing when someone who doesn’t appear to know their ass from their elbow claims they don’t need that advice & neither should anybody because they have all the answers they can pull out of their prodigious ass
…the thing that has somehow become commonplace but which surely ought still to stagger us all is how consistently bad this whole shitshow is while still managing to find somewhere lower to go
Just a note of thanks to SplinterRIP, Meg, and Hannibal who do the DOT – you folks work hard. I appreciate the morning round-up, albeit overwhelming to reflect on each day’s additional examples of our current government’s disdain for, and casual cruelty toward, the citizens of the US. The linked Frank Bruni was especially spot on.
…thanks & all…but as for that last bit…he does make a bunch of observations I’d be hard-pressed to deny…more than a few of which I can recall some of the folks hereabouts (or in a previous online home or two) making more than once
…not the least of which being the one about the first half of the Mueller Report which links on to a PBS piece from last year by way of a refresher & goes on to say
But even many of the people who paid it heed missed the point, which wasn’t Russia’s nefariousness. It was the process’s corruptibility. It was the power of lies in a world gone digital.
…speaking for myself I honestly can’t make up my mind which disturbs me more…the idea that the election of the president might be susceptible to fraudulent influence at what might be thought of as a mechanical level such that the result might be a work of fiction…or the possibility that it wouldn’t need to be because enough people might be susceptible to buying into the lie to scrape the votes together for a desired outcome
…I want to tell myself that it’s inconceivable…but I remember too well believing that the first time & we all know how that turned out?
…the facebook stuff nearer the top likewise makes some good (if likely familiar) points… particularly the one by the long-suffering Carole Cadwalladr about being through the looking glass
…in a saner world the lack of appetite for shoring up the vulnerabilities demonstrated by the 2016 election ought to be enough to break the association between the MAGA cause & any kind of patriotic or nationalist platform all on its own…but here in this one Mitch McConnell isn’t guaranteed to lose his seat…or the GOP the Senate…which is pretty much batshit crazy from where I sit?
The Russian influence that worries me the most is stuff that is amplified by the mainstream press. The Wikileaks hack and release was vastly more damaging than the trolling (which I think had some effect) because it fed the most poisonous tendencies of the media.
And what is scary is how the media has shown little interest in fixing itself. Ken Vogel and the NY Times were only weeks, possibly days away from releasing a giant turd of Russian disinformation on Ukraine last year. Even after the whistleblower revelations on Giuliani and company began to emerge, Vogel was still pushing the narrative. They want to be used.
They still bend over backwards to give the GOP credibility, and treat all claims as valid, no matter how ridiculous. And as it becomes clear that Senator Ron Johnson is collaborating with the Russians to launch an anti-Biden disinformation campaign, with direct coordination with the White House, there is a real danger that the NY Times, CNN, and the rest will light the fuse first and then issue weak apologies later about the smoking wreakage.

…it isn’t strictly daily if it skips a day & thanks to you (& Meg) I’m pretty sure we haven’t in a fair while…besides which I figure everyone can use a few days without one of these laundry lists of links I always seem to wind up producing
…I’m pretty sure the alternative might not be entirely healthy?
…forget if it’s been mentioned before…but if one is prepared to do a bit of clicking about & perhaps a moderate amount of cutting & pasting a remarkable amount of the post’s content can be viewed from a perspective more or less astride the paywall?
…not that any of us would know anything about that or anything…obviously…because we’re all terribly well behaved around here & wouldn’t dream of assuming that a “paper of record” ought to be free…in this of all election years
I’m surprised that the White House is pushing back against extending benefits. Doesn’t Trump want to send his signature out again before the election? I mean, it’s just the sort of “buy votes while blowing up the deficit” stunt that Trump would pull, since he doesn’t understand taxes, finance, or, well, arithmetic.
I dunno, seems like they’ve
1. Given up or
2. Have something else up their sleeves. I mean, not Donnie, he’s too stupid to zip his own pants. But someone else maybe?
The biggest issue for Trump is that any sort of package related to the pandemic makes it clear that the pandemic is still a thing that’s happening, and extending unemployment benefits flies in the face of his “the economy is going to be humming and we’re going to have an awesome 3rd quarter talk”.
The funny thing is that, if Trump had appeared in anyway competent during this whole fucking thing, he’d be well on his way to re-election. It certainly seems like they’ve just given up since Trump never really wanted this job in the first place. It’s part of the reason I’m not losing my mind over Trump refusing to leave office. He’s nothing if not a coward and he would much rather buy his own network like OAN to destroy until he dies than continue to be forced to actually have to do stuff.
So, I know this is MN specific, but if any of y’all know anyone else in my neck of the woods, and those folks have kids with ASD’s, and either a baby, or will be having a baby on the way anytime soon-ish, the U of M** has folks who would LOVE to follow that baby’s development over the next couple years!

I’ve only done a couple and my efforts are piddling next to Rip and Meg’s. But You’re welcome. 😊

Somebody is showing off that they’re rich enough to afford a Washington Post subscription.

That’ll be me ignoring every link from the NYT.

This is SHOCKING I tell you.
“But at least 14 Marlins have tested positive, including 12 players, according to an ESPN report.”
Whoever could have predicted such a thing? /s
Not me! That’s for sure! I mean, other than it being the opening sentence in my preview. 🙂
Reminds me of “I never thought the leopards would eat MY face, says man who voted for face eating leopards party”
