    • The reason why the market keeps tanking isn’t because they aren’t getting enough candy from the Fed or the Administration. It’s because Trump’s response to the outbreak has been so inept that the markets have no confidence in the ability of the economy to avoid shutting down.

      • …oh, sure…but the way he keeps garbling his own “message” is just pouring gasoline on that conflagration

…so I wouldn’t be at all surprised if you could find a significant correlation between him trying to make it better via twitter & a downward-spiraling cascade as the value drains out of speculative markets…or even the regular sort

…it’s that reverse-midas-touch the little orange fingers have

  1. “…anybody want to bet not “every” american sees one of those checks if the GOP has its druthers…in an election year, no less…so let’s hope something comes of this sort of thing”

They are already setting limits on sick leave – like your company can’t have fewer than 50 people (so like, basically all restaurants that are not part of a large chain) or more than 500 (so if you work for a giant corporation, tough titties). You also have to have children out of school to get it, because we all know that if you don’t have kids out of school, you should go to work sick during a pandemic.

I am watching bill after bill and idea after idea and realizing that my self-employed self and my husband, a now (hopefully temporarily) laid-off bartender/bar-owner will all not see a fucking pittatnce. We don’t fit into the narrow definition of what counts as work here.

Bartending, in New Orleans, is lucrative and stable. During recessions, tourism does well in New Orleans because it’s a cheap alternative to Europe. During recessions, alcohol sales usually skyrocket. Tending bar/being in the industry is a smart and stable career choice (not that I need to defend it). My husband is a bartender/invested in a bar because he is responsible and cautious and it’s a money factor in our town.

Yet the people giving speeches on Capitol Hill think he has a frat boy job and doesn’t deserve any benefits. Take care of the people who did all the right things first, like work an office job and have children, right? I mean, that’s not new, that’s been true for him and a ton of service/hospitality workers for forever (fun fact – its roots are in racism! https://www.forbes.com/sites/rakeenmabud/2019/02/12/the-racist-roots-of-tipping-reappearing-in-the-gig-economy/#42d732706a66)

    • And they talk about shoring up the hotel industry. But people don’t travel to a city like New Orleans to spend all their time in a hotel. Where are the plans to help the small restaurants and bars like your husband’s? I afraid you’re right. The money isn’t going to go where it’s needed.

      • Honestly, they’re not even acting in their own best interests (protecting the big hotels, for example) and I’m starting to believe that they truly do not understand how this works. Maybe it was ignorance over malice the whole time…?

  2. I’m watching trump’s press conference. He makes my anxiety spike, he’s so STUPID. He just told us self swabs mean you do it yourself. Why is this man still the president? People are dying, people are losing their jobs. And we have bozo the dictator at the helm. I don’t know if I’m going to cry, throw up, or both.

  3. Just stocked up on edibles before they shut that down too. I need to medicate through the daily press briefings. Every time, he manages to make it worse. I’ve already lost 1/4 of my measly 401k fund. This $1000 they’re talking about issuing selected Americans is a drop in the bucket of what’s needed. That doesn’t even cover the average apartment in King county.

    • Right? Talk to me about $1000 when they’ve suspended mortgage payments and forgiven student loan debt and instigated paid leave to EVERYONE not just people who work for certain places doing certain things. Then the $1000 can cover expenses.

  4. Just dropped Mr Tits at the airport. He’s apparently working at the only airline not furloughing right now. So he’s gone for at least 2 mos instead of 2 weeks on one off as would be usual. Because now the worry is that WA will get put on lockdown due to its “hotspot” status. Just ate Scooby snacks.

    • …now may not be the time for calm…but here’s hoping you find some chill?

      …Scooby Snacks for the win?

…seriously though, best of luck to you & Mr Tits with all of that…don’t know as it helps at all but among some of the folks I hung out with as a teenager describing something as “the tits” was considered high praise…so Mr Tits is quite the moniker in some circles…true story
